Mumbai boo: Sachin says it was not that bad

Booed by his home fans, plagued by a prolonged form slump and battling a fresh injury -- Sachin Tendulkar's cup of woes may be brimming over but the little champion is ready to fight the odds.

The recent reversals notwithstanding, Tendulkar is clear in his mind that his reflexes have not slowed down and believes there is "nothing to be concerned about" as of now.

Tendulkar also scotched any speculation about retirement, saying he had been "batting well" and just needed some luck to turn things around. Asked specifically if he was contemplating retirement, he replied, "I am not interested in this question".

On his failures in three consecutive Test series, the record-breaking batsman said, "I feel I have been batting well. I have made one odd mistake and paid the price. Batsmen sometimes get away with bad shots and are fortunate to see some catches get dropped.

"I just feel that luck needs to be a bit more on my side. I am not overly worried because everyone goes through such a phase. I think it is a part and parcel of life. As long as I know from the bottom of my heart that I am trying my best, it is okay," Tendulkar said in an interview in the latest issue of 'Outlook' magazine.

Tendulkar said he had been speaking to former players who had gone through such phases to learn how they dealt with the situation.

“I speak with senior players who have actually gone through such things and how they dealt with such situations--it makes a huge difference to your confidence. It is important to stay calm mentally,” Tendulkar said.

“I know exactly what is happening but sometimes getting guidance from seniors who have played a lot of cricket helps. I have some very good people around who share their thoughts with me. One of them is Greg Chappell. Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar are there too. Talking to them helps,” he said.

Tendulkar, ruled out of competitive cricket for at least two months due to a shoulder injury which requires surgery, said his reflexes had not slowed down.

“I don’t believe that my reflexes have slowed down. I am quite happy with the way my feet move when I am at the crease. I like the way I was middling the ball both at Karachi and Mumbai. I believe I am getting in the right positions to play each delivery,” he said.

On being booed by his home crowd at the Wankhede Stadium during the third Test against England, he said, “I thought the issue was blown out of proportion by the media. It wasn’t that bad. I have more well wishers than the small section of the crowd at the Wankhede Stadium that day. I have to ignore them. I cannot forget the backing I have got from the people all these years just because of this”.

I think people often take greater offence to being booed than ought to be taken.  Personally, I do not see much wrong in members of the crowd choosing to boo.  That to me is an appropriate manner to express displeasure at one's performance that given day, not slighting their past achievements.  Just as a player that has not performed well in the past can get applauded for a very good performance on the day, so can a player that has performed very well in the past get booed for a very poor performance on the given day.  It's certainly a much more constructive way of expressing displeasure than some of the other things crowds can do when things go ugly-- throwing things, spitting, setting fires, etc.  Booing is simply reflective of one poor performance and the exact opposite of applause.  I'm sure the many of the same fans would applaud a very good performance the next time around.  Many would label this as fickle, but it is only natural at times to be disappointed and express your displeasure, provided it is in a non-violent and non-vulgar manner, at someone's performance from whom you expect much more.  Basically, it is not a condemnation of Tendulkar the man, or the great player, but the the single run effort off 21 balls.  I, for one, do feel it gets blown way out of proportion-- the reason many fans boo is because we actually care.

" I have to ignore them "...

Arre, sachin bhaiya...do NOT ignore them...rather they were all your well wishers and still are (just hurt well wishers)...dont ignore them...step it up, play well, and turn them back into ur applauders.

Sahir: On the acct that it is the fans who care who may have booed (atleast some of them), I think he should not "ignore them".  You are right, it is only a reaction of the effort of that particular day, applause for good effort, similarly the boo is in the same level...thats all.

Come on now fineleg, he can very well ignore them.
I don't think a player of his caliber will have to go by the crowds response to know that he is not doing things right. With that said the crowd has all the right to boo if that is how they choose to express their frustration.

See hurts when another player says your hero's dialogs doesnt it? I really wish these players would learn to be honest with themselves. Ganguly has sucked for the last couple of years and Sachin has sucked over the last couple of series atleast. Let them admit it! Only then can they start fixing the issues
