Nixon did a Mohali on McGovern in 1972, 520-17 which I think is the biggest in modern times.

Thanks Dex.

Fron John Kerry
Quote
"Tonight we elected a President who has inspired a majority of Americans with his vision and policies, a man who is principally a leader for these times who happens to also be African American; and because of America’s stunning ability to move on and transform, to write a new chapter of our history, Barack Obama will be President during the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights movement and the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

"Tonight there are tears of joy and disbelief in small rural communities and inner cities, where for too long, some weren’t sure anything was really possible for them.

"Tonight new dreams are born and old truths are affirmed. Tonight we enter a new America, the best America, the America of our highest hopes."

This could well be the most important night in our lifetime if we consider the effect of this event on the next 4 years for the whole world.

I think the night well really well ... the results ;D, and then a gracious speech by McCain, followed by Obama.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/05/us/politics/05ahead.html?hp shows a nice graphic depicting the changes from 2004. I think it may require subscription later... but right now it is free on the front page of NY Times.

Lovely quote from Maya Angelou, taken from
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/11/5/15118/1772/202/653739

Here on the pulse of this new day
You may have the grace to look up and out
And into your sister's eyes, into
Your brother's face, your country
And say simply
Very simply
With hope
Good morning.

One of the interesting things to look out for now, will be how the republicans prepare for the next time. Will they try to redefine their base ... like converging on the financial conservatives, but stop pandering to the religious, class-based politics. Or will they choose a different way, or even keep doing the same stuff hoping that things would reverse with time.

there aren't enough of either to have numbers great enough to be viable political parties. the truth is that the uber-rich have found a way to manipulate the masses to vote in the interest of the uber-rich by convincing them that abortion, guns, gods, and gays are the primary issues when in reality those issues serve as an exterior screen for the real issue--taxes and money for the rich. the whole system has been rigged since karl rove and newt gingrich designed this strategy to create a 'permanent majority'

whereas once the blue collar america was democratic bread n butter, now that demographic is mostly republican because these people are putting their social views over their economic interests.

but the power always remains with the uber-rich, not the crazies of the deep south (or alaska!). if these uber-rich had any interest whatsoever in actually overturning roe v wade, they would've done it long ago. same with gay marriage--it is thing they put on ballots every year, so the base comes out to vote, not because they care about gays one way or the other. but you must credit them for their brilliance--after all, a man in kansas is now more worried about terrorists attacking some rural town in kansas than is the average ny-er about nyc.

but somehow, we've broken free although their strategy has assured that no matter what!

Greer lets loose on Michelle Obama's 'butcher's apron'
Feminist Germaine Greer says the dress Michelle Obama wore to her husband's US election declaration was a "butcher's apron" and looked like a "geometrical haemorrhage".

In her regular column for the Guardian, Greer calls the outfit "All black with an eye-burning red panel that splattered itself down the front like a geometrical haemorrhage".

It was "a poster in the most disturbing colours known to man, the colours of chaos. Coral snakes and venomous spiders signal their destructive potential by the display of similarly violent contrasts".

Greer refers to online critics of the dress to back up her argument and says that if Michelle had dressed herself and her daughters for defeat, she could not have chose better outfits.

Most newspapers were too high-minded to refer to it, but reaction trickled through the Internet and surfaced in USA Today, where a poll revealed that twice as many people hated the gown as thought it irrelevant or OK, she said.

One blogger complained that she could hardly listen to president-elect Barack Obama's speech "for fear of that dress".
