Toxic ship: Clemenceau stirs environmental issue
« on: January 19, 2006, 10:24:04 AM »
What do you do when a 27,000 tonne ‘Weapon of Mass Destruction’ heads towards a vulnerable target? If you are Greenpeace, you do your utmost to stop it. Early this morning Greenpeace activists intercepted the Clemenceau off the coast of Egypt, calling upon the government of Egypt to support Greenpeace in upholding the Basel Convention, and ensure that this toxic death-ship is left with only one way to proceed – back to France.

"The halls of Palais de l'Elysee must have a brooding sense of déjà vu about them today. Early this morning, two Greenpeace activists boarded the carrier 50 nautical miles off the coast of Egypt in international waters and unfurled banners declaring, once again,  "ASBESTOS CARRIER: STAY OUT OF INDIA".

One of these activists, Sebastian, is up on that mast the second time in a month. On December 12th, the Dane had spent 23 freezing hours on his perch overlooking Toulon harbour in France.

And a French commando squad is, yet again, trying to get Greenpeace down from the mast, even as a military chopper circles overhead."

The workers at Gujarat's Alang ship-breaking yard are waiting with bated breath for the Supreme Court verdict on whether the decommissioned French warship Clemenceau would be allowed into Indian waters. .......http://o3.indiatimes.com/nnnnn

44 activists from the Greenpeace ships Esperanza and Arctic Sunrise appeal for help in their campaign to end whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale sanctuary, by spelling out the words `Help End Whaling!’ using their bodies. After spending a month battling to defend whales from the grenade tipped harpoons of the whaling fleet, the international environmental organisation announced its departure from the Sanctuary with a call on consumers to tell the companies behind the whaling fleet like Nissui, Gortons and Sealords that whaling is bad for business.
