they do but think about it..it is really a mostly western concept. This "I love you", "happy new year", "happy birthday" are truly western concept and I find them somewhat amusing.

during Telugu new year in AP, we make a pickle called "ugadi pacchadi", this pickle is supposed to contain all the tastes including bitter, sour, sweet etc. I idea is, life will invariably offer all these tastes, that is life, learn to enjoy it with all the flavours without getting too much worried about bitterness or sweetness. That I think is the Indian style. :)

Serious question - ignore if you are only having fun. How do you conclude that "happy new year", "happy birthday" are not truly Indian? I do not know about vedic times but Bengalis have said similar things for decades on the Bengali new Year and after "Bijoya Dashami", the last day of Durga Puja (which incidentally was yesterday).

prfsr, I am always having fun so that is a moot question.
Do I really believe in what I just said? Yes, I think so.

To be honest, I am not completely aware of the history behind indian habits during birthdays etc. say before 18th century. We were definitely not blowing candles, our culture worshipped fire, so we were more towards lighting candles. can you elaborate/translate what exactly bengalis wish for on festivals & birthdays?

While I am not completely sure of the history of exact phrases used for wishing, I am fairly positive that "happiness" is not rated very high in Indian culture. This over emphasis on happiness definitely appear to be a western concept. Heck, even during wars, we ask for victory for truth and not for us. But, I will find out more on this and let you know.

Many many happy returns of the day Ravi. May you live long enough to see Ganguly's son score his 44th test hundred. And then declare his retirement five years later.
