100 m running and 'split second' factor
« on: September 23, 2008, 01:41:39 PM »
The winner of 100m running race takes 8.90 odd seconds, (exact value not known to me). The point is, is there any system to measure the exact split second of the starting point time of each athelete? As i understand, the clock starts at same time for all when whistle blows;which is said to be the starting time for all. But all may not have started at the same time.
What can be done is; let them start as usual with full swing. At a distance of say 10-15met, there is a real 'start' line which when crossed by an individual; his time count starts. From this line there is another line at 100m where the 'end' time is recorded as usual. This will eliminate the fractional difference in the starting of the individual.
I may be wrong in case if there is already a system to record different 'start' time for each one.
What do you say?

agree with you and it should be the same for all short distance races. it would reduce all the minor inequalities in this respect in terms of hearing the gunshot and your ability to power through the start. it would also do away with all this false start crap.

and it would then be all about the running.

though i am sure they all go through extensive training for the explosion at the start.

the problem is that running anything more than 100 m will change the speed of the race and make historical data invalid...i think these guys have been trained for years to run at the gunshot...like a pavalovian response
