Sept. 9: Whenever his career has been threatened of an abrupt end, Sourav Ganguly has come out with knocks to pull himself out of the woods.

But Monday’s ‘decision’ of being axed from the Rest of India squad for the Irani Cup has not only been a bolt from the blue, but has also raised concerns over Ganguly’s selection in the squad for the home series against Australia.

Though Ganguly has shied away from commenting on the selectors’ decision, it was learnt that the former India captain is disgusted with the selectors in the BCCI and has expressed his disappointment of being axed, amongst close quarters.

Speaking to this newspaper, a reliable source close to the left-handed batsman claimed: "He (Sourav) is simply disgusted. He said, ‘how can such a hasty decision be taken with just one disappointing series? Even the other three (Tendulkar, Dravid and Laxman) didn’t score loads of runs and yet they have been included. This is just not fair’."

Meanwhile, a group of Cricket Association of Bengal members who are close to Ganguly might forward a letter within a day or two to the Jagmohan Dalmiya-led administration, urging them to voice their protest in the BCCI over the former India skipper’s axe.

But CAB officials are more intent on speculating whether Ganguly would be available for Ranji Trophy matches, where Bengal face the uphill task of qualifying for the elite group. Now, it remains to be seen whether a player of the stature of Ganguly agrees to play in the plate division games.

Nevertheless, state association officials are ever hopeful. "We would always want a player like Sourav to feature for Bengal especially in this situation of crisis. But no matter what decision he takes, we will stand by him," a CAB office bearer said on Tuesday.
