Can you contribute a day a month?
« on: September 07, 2008, 06:20:09 PM »
It is no secret that the site post numbers have reached an abysmal level. It isn't that the people aren't visiting; almost every day the same number of people login to the site as before but the posts are simply not coming.

I can add features and software and new items and advertise the site but all that's of no use if even the core group of posters aren't posting as this is primarily a cricket discussion forum.

So, I want to propose something new to inject some life into the site as well as get more user participation.

For each day of the month, let's have one volunteer who writes an article/blog entry. This will not only get everyone involved but also lead to thought provoking discussions. Each article will automatically be posted on the new front page interface (upcoming in next week). Further, that person can also consider taking charge for the discussions that day--actively reading and participating (but not required).

On this list, I'll keep updating...please reply with a number, which will be the date each month that you'd contribute...we can start this in a week, on Sep 15th.

I'm not sure I agree with this: If you look at stats (;D), we have had 5000+ posts in every month (except Jun/July 2008) since beginning of last year. In Aug, we were back to 5000+ posts..... there will definitely be quiet periods when India is not playing, but that is inevitable.

also the reason for low numbers compared to earlier is that people are not taking Ganguly baits. Think about the thousands of posts that we are missing a month due to people not cooperating.

I will take the 18th if the idea of taking a day and pushing discussions is a go. And I will find a topic other than ganguly. Talk about trying the impossible :)

expecting high activity when India is not playing is unreasoanable and impossible.

what day are you taking boss :)

I'll write when I get time - will do one every month at least. I don't think my work schedule will allow me to stick to a specific date each month.

I volunteer for the 20th, but because I am writing a book, someone has to remind me (the first time) please. I think this DG is great.

If I find out that your book is really a compilations of my posts (or contains terms like maharathi and Gangulian) then you better share your profits with me (one beer would suffice) :)

The above post describes my situation too.............but I'll volunteer for the 16th. Can Dex create an alert system for the dates? :)

I think everyone has had a heavy meal of cricket activity these past few months and are now resting, giving their systems time to digest all that they have partaken. The wait is for the next course to arrive in the form of the Aussies. Then on, it is going to be a blur of activity as I am sure the following people will figure amongst main dishes on this forum.
1. SRT-Now that we have covered his toes, fingers, wrist, shoulder etc we will be debating his eyesight should he get out for a couple of low scores.
2. SG- Should he continue to remain in the side or be given time out to perform in front of another kind of camera to prove that he is still ‘The Warrior Prince’.
3. RD- Confirming that he is still India’s best Test batsman amongst the older lot. But is it only because the others are scoring less than the 25 he is making?
4. VVS- Was Afridi shooting his mouth off or VVS a fine player though he is, really does not assert himself enough? I mean if you watch him bat with the tail you might think Afridi has a point.
5. AK- Is it the great man himself who is bowling at the moment or just a poor clone? Which will he lose first, the captaincy or his place in the XI?
6. MSD- Has winning the B&H series under his captaincy whetted his appetite to such an extent that he now wishes to do the same with the Test side? Ensuring the Aussies are once again at the receiving end.
7. Jaffer, Kaif, Chopra etc will continue to figure as the side dishes.

Well, we should not be surprised. Where as this is a Cricket Forum, sometimes other topics are the ones that make this Forum more interesting than others (USP, if you want). Right now, this seems to be not the case anymore. Partisan views may be welcome, but not to the extent of dedicating a thread on the main page to the GOP and a thread on Obama relegated to Etc to languish there. Also some interesting topics are now sent to the everlasting peace (RIP) under the section of Etc Archives....!

Vincent,
Don't be fooled by the titles -- all US politics threads here have the same composition. A handful of people supporting the dems (or opposing the reps) and a couple people (at most) supporting the reps. The thread titles are the titles of the first posted article usually - which is not unreasonable to start with. In any case one more voice on either side is very welcome - please jump in!

I think the dilemma is whether to make a separate board for politics - as we all know that was tried and pretty much failed.

I think as jfk said the DG is going to be quieter when there is no cricket.

Also the discussions without cricket have been rather one sided with all DGians on one side and only Ruchir supporting the evil side.

With the Gangulian wars we atleast had a small group of rebels on the Cliquian side.

So either we diversify the membership or accept the dwindling discussions

LOL...what?! Boss, I've worked for John Kerry 2004 campaign and volunteered for Clinton 2008 campaign. I don't think we even have a moderator who supports Republicans, so I'm not sure what you're trying to imply here?

There are no republicans in Chicago! My boss almost fired me when in a moment of boredom while traveling I just asked him what does "obama" really stand for in terms of issues.

Nopes you have to ask Ruchir to find some of his friends from the NRA meetings

sorry, dex, i am unable to commit to this coz of various responsibilities in real life. i can only "lurk" these days.

on another note, slowly but surely, my interest in cricket is fading away and am not inspired to discuss cricket any more. also, i flunked Nuanced Exposition 101 despite attending an A school.  ;D

pips, why's that a problem...we hardly ever discuss cricket here anyway :)

perhaps a nuanced piece on the nuances of the nuance is in order

Interesting thought process. Willing to contribute, commitment for a date is the difficulity.  Will however pick one of the dates that are available while i have the free day, preferably Saturday or Sunday :)
