ODI #4 - Playing with fire
« on: August 25, 2008, 03:22:36 PM »
Reports indicate that India will continue with an extra bat and just 4 regular bowlers. Arguably, the 5th bowler is even weaker than the Sehwag-Ganguly-Tendulkar options tried in the past. The fact that Zaheer has had a hot streak allowed them to get away with it, but it is only a matter of very little time before this gaping hole is exploited. Have the selectors learnt anything  :BangHead:

selectors? u mean Donny ?!? Yes, Donny yesterday said he knows 5th bowler is an issue but wants to play 7 batters so that he can attack both spinners with the security of an extra bat. He said that the team has collectively made that a strategy to tackle M&M. He says he will need a cushion of 20-25 more runs to compensate for lack of the 5th bowler.

"Cushion" of 20-25 runs -- which they no doubt have been getting  ;D

So who would be the 5th REGULAR bowler.

I am not really sure that the 5th bowler as a non specialist is too bad an idea. The opposition will pick out atleast one or 2 bowlers to go after. If we had Pathan as the 5th bowler they would go after him. And I am not sure he would go for less than 60 odd runs either. At the end of the day the security that Donny mentioned maybe worth it.

When u know there is batting left in the tank you can be a bit more aggressive against the chucky and carrom guy.

Well, that just reflects on Pathan's utility as a bowler these days. Ojha is fit to play isn't he? They could have always flown in a replacement for Sehwag to shore up the bowling.

Not really.

No team will go with 5 specialist bowlers. The 5th bowler (#6 or #7 in batting) HAS to be able to bat decently or should really be an allrounder.

No team can succeed with playing 5 bowlers (and lets be sure ... bhajji belongs at #11 as does Zaheer ... Munaf belongs at #18). So given the choices either it is Pathan or have a YS, Badri etc bowl. And we are not really losing much here are we?

SL are stupid to go with 5 bowlers with Sanath quite a capable 5th bowler and they have Dilshan as a backup 6th bowler. I think they rate Vaas, Kulasekara and Tushara too highly as batsmen ;)

Bradman had a horror start as captain. He lost the toss at the 'Gabba, watched his main strike bowler Ernie McCormick break down and was out for a duck in the second innings on a sticky wicket. England romped home by 322 runs and won the second Test in Sydney by an innings, rain once again coming to its aid. Bradman made his second successive duck and the critics were not impressed with the scoreboard - England 2, Australia 0 and in grave danger of losing the Ashes. One newspaper reported that Bradman, the spotlight now focused on him all the time and his anxiety level full to overflowing, was not getting the loyal support of all his players. McCabe issued a statement saying the players were behind him.

Things turned around for Australia and Bradman in the third Test in Melbourne. With rain a factor for the third time and England batting on a sticky wicket, the shrewd Bradman told his bowlers not to get England out. When Allen declared (too late, as it turned out) towards the end of play on Saturday, the wicket was still unfriendly. Bradman gambled and opened the second innings with tail-enders Bill O'Reilly and a stunned `Chuck' Fleetwood-Smith.

O¦Reilly was out first ball, but Fleetwood-Smith survived, joking that he had the game by the throat.

BY Monday the wicket had lost its fire and, with Bradman back to his fluent best with 270, Australia won. Bradman's improvisation had paid off. This time Allen's captaincy was under fire. He might have clinched the series 3-0 if he had declared England's second innings sooner and exposed Australia to the damp wicket. Australia won the next two Tests, the captain contributing 212 and 169, to retain the Ashes 3-2 and Bradman had come through his first baptism of fire with his reputation enhanced.

we have spoken about this strategy many times, seems that the it has the Don's blessngs

captains these days are not daring enough to do things like this. just doesnt happen.
certainly wont see an Indian captain being the first to do it

I liked the TV coverage of the washed out game. The producer had a good knack of putting hearts and circles on screen when showing chicks. SL does have a lot of hot chicks. I specially like the one in maroon shirt, wet and dancing, with nice jugs too! Gay theme in putting the hearts around SL players and support staff was the best... simply howlarious.  ;D  Slinga's wife is pretty hot too!! Producer was making some connections between MSD and hot SL chicks, in split frames. Pretty good use of idle time, IMO.

well, today is his day too  - another washout on the cards plus 90% chance of rain on friday.

hence india wins the series and the "young legs" prevail!  ;D

Btw, Sangakkara is standing upto the stumps.
8.4 Vaas to Gambhir, no run, short and wide outside the off stump, Gambhir slaps it hard and into the gap, fabulous stop by Dilshan at cover point, lovely dive and got both hands on that one

8.5 Vaas to Gambhir, FOUR!!, Gambhir comes down the track and picks it up cleanly, hoicks it between midwicket and long on for four, didn't quite get good hold of that one
