sex and the olympic city

I am often asked if the Olympic village - the vast restaurant and housing conglomeration that hosts the world's top athletes for the duration of the Games - is the sex-fest it is cracked up to be. My answer is always the same: too right it is. I played my first Games in Barcelona in 1992 and got laid more often in those two and a half weeks than in the rest of my life up to that point. That is to say twice, which may not sound a lot, but for a 21-year-old undergraduate with crooked teeth, it was a minor miracle.

Barcelona was, for many of us Olympic virgins, as much about sex as it was about sport. There were the gorgeous hostesses - there to assist the athletes - in their bright yellow shirts and black skirts; there were the indigenous lovelies who came to watch the competitions. And then there were the female athletes - literally thousands of them - strutting, shimmying, sashaying and jogging around the village, clad in Lycra and exposing yard upon yard of shiny, toned, rippling and unimaginably exotic flesh. Women from all the countries of the world: muscular, virile, athletic and oozing oestrogen. I spent so much time in a state of lust that I could have passed out. Indeed, for all I knew I did pass out - in a place like that how was one to tell the difference between dreamland and reality?

"It is as if sportsmen and women have a higher base level of sexual energy. But why? Can it be that one of the underlying drivers of sporting greatness is also the very thing that produces an overactive sex drive?"

Imagine - Ajit Agarkar.

And it lends a whole new scary dimension to the age of the Chinese milk-teeth losing children.

Can you do that Mr. Muralitharan? Uhh, pole vault it seems. Slightly different sport but kind of similar equipment and approach. May be this is for Mendis  ;D.

And where is the pole vaulter from Bahrain?

PHELPS SUCKS FACE WITH AUSSIE

August 22, 2008 --

Michael Phelps doesn't have a girlfriend, but he celebrated his record-breaking eight gold medals in Beijing by sneaking off for a sizzling game of tonsil hockey with one of Australia's hottest Olympians.

Phelps, fresh from shattering Mark Spitz's 36-year-old record, was spotted Monday night in a hot make-out session with Down Under swimmer Stephanie Rice, a source tells The Post's Clemente Lisi and Luke Dennehy. The pumped-up pair clinched and swapped spit at a celebratory bash outside the Olympic Village.

The Baltimore Bullet swooped in for the lip-lock with the 20-year-old brunette just weeks after she split from Aussie swimmer Eamon Sullivan. "All the swimmers are talking about it, and [Sullivan] is cut up about what happened," the source said.

The day after the face-sucking frolics, Phelps and Rice cheekily posed together for Speedo - laughing and playfully groping each other as a photographer snapped them in their swimsuits. "I definitely admire him for his athletic ability and everything he's achieved," gushed Rice, who won three gold medals of her own. "I'm just really glad to be in the mix with that."

Whether the dynamic duo is now a couple isn't known. Phelps' rep didn't return our calls.

Since winning, the 6-foot-4 wonder has been linked to US swimmer Amanda Beard, who posed nude for Playboy, and British model Lily Donaldson. Both have denied ever dating him, with Beard going as far as to fume, "Eww, that's nasty."

Meanwhile, Simon & Schuster's Free Press imprint has signed Phelps to write "Built To Succeed," a behind-the-scenes look at the training regimen that led to his victorious performances. It'll be out in December. Sources say Phelps got a $1 million advance in anticipation of its doing better than his 2005 tome, "Beneath the Surface," which sold only 10,000 copies.

edit: While browsing the other threads after posting this, I realise stuff about her has been already posted by Poondu. One can close their eyes and not look at the pic

Had read this some time back

The mystery of the hot Paraguayan -- solved!
By Chris Chase
During Fourth-Place Medal's award-winning* live blog coverage of the Olympic Opening Ceremony, one question haunted our panel and reading audience, and it wasn't whether the fireworks were real or how they managed to do that cool display with the blocks. No, we didn't care about that stuff. All we wanted to know was, who was that gorgeous woman who marched into Beijing National Stadium with the Paraguayan delegation?

After an exhaustive investigation by 4PM's crack investigative team, the mystery woman has been identified as Leryn Franco, an athlete with the Paraguayan delegation. Ms. Franco represents her native country in the javelin throw.

The 26-year old Franco is competing in her second Olympics, thanks to a burgeoning modeling career that gave her the financial support to continue competing in javelin competitions. Since finishing 42nd in Athens, Franco has balanced her athletic career with both the modeling and pageant work (she was runner-up Ms. Paraguay in 2006 -- no word on whether throwing a javelin was her talent).

The javelin competition begins August 19 in Beijing.

* It didn't technically win an award, but a commenter told us it was the best live blog ever, so that's gotta count for something.

PT> SSl,  Franco carries a Javelin instead of pole   ;)

Table Tennis champions give nod to sexing up sport

BEIJING (AFP) — Maria Sharapova's dresses may never make an appearance, nor the Williams sisters' bling, but table tennis is at least trying to sex up its sport.

Some women paddlers gave a nod of approval this week to suggestions from a senior governing body official to wear skirts during matches to make their game more stylish in an attempt to pull in the crowds.

"We are trying to push the players to use skirts and also nicer shirts, not the shirts that are made for men, but ones with more curves," International Table Tennis Federation vice-president Claude Bergeret said.

With loose-fitting shorts and baggy shirts the usual attire, table tennis, mostly played in bland gymnasiums around the world, has never had the glamour of women's tennis nor the sex appeal of beach volleyball.

Wang Chen of the United States, who used to play for China before moving to New York eight years ago, said some players were already moving to skirts.

"Some players are already wearing skirts, I think it's a good idea, the game (already) looks more beautiful than before," said Wang.

"I think women should wear dresses like tennis players," the 34-year-old added. "I think our outfits are so boring, not sexy."

Wang said sexing up the uniforms would draw the crowds.

Japan's Ai Fukuhara is one player already taking the initiative, opting for a "skort" -- a tight skirt with cycling shorts underneath -- for her round of 16 match Thursday against China's Zhang Yining, who wore black shorts and shirt with a striking yellow dragon printed on the front.

Plans to sex-up the image of a sport, which is an obsession in Asia but associated with damp, community halls and youth clubs in the west, are nothing new.

At the 2007 Women's World Cup in Chengdu, a range of sleek table tennis dresses were shown off with top fashion designer Lu Kun called in to handle the design.

"Although the skirts are just a small part of the changes, they may spark a revolution by changing the image of table tennis," explained Steve Daiton, the Director of the ITTF Asia Office.

"It might be a revolution if women paddlers wear skirts during games just like tennis and badminton players, which will definitely help win back the lost interest in the game."

Not all fans are supportive of the idea.

"Don't get me wrong - as a healthy red-blooded male I'm all in favor of table tennis women wearing more attractive clothes," wrote one blogger on a table tennis fan website.

"But I'm not in favor of them being pushed or coerced into wearing outfits they aren't comfortable to play in. And how about the men? Why not bring in compulsory lycra bike pants instead of the baggy shorts many men wear currently?

"I'm sure our female audience would appreciate it. And don't forget the umpires and referees - a little black and white striped skintight number with sequins would surely boost ratings."

Pankaj_t, your javelin thrower came 49 out of 51 competitors. I think Srinath is a better match for her, not Murali. On the other hand, my pole vaulter won the gold medal.

You were posting eye candy with no sporting achievement. I was posting only to reveal the true heart of a champion.

Stephanie Rice rumoured to be dating Michael Phelps

Melbourne: Michael Phelps was first linked to US swimmer Amanda Beard and English model Lily Donaldson and now a new name is making waves in the media for getting cozy with the iconic Olympian -Stephanie Rice.

Rumours are abuzz that the Phelps has been partying with Rice since his record-breaking gold medal feats, reports the Daily Telegraph.

When a shirtless Phelps got friendly with Rice at a promotion, it set tongues wagging.

Aussie swimming insiders said that the pair was very close at a party organised by Ian Thorpe. And blogging sites are carrying pictures of Phelps cosying up to a dark-haired woman with comments hinting it is Rice.

Meanwhile, Beard has denied that she is dating Phelps saying, "Eww, that's nasty. I have never, ever hooked up with Michael Phelps," Beard told a radio station in Phoenix.

"Come on, I have really good taste. He's really not my type. We don't even talk to each other," she said.

Phelps was equally emphatic in his denial. "I'm not dating Amanda Beard. I think she has a boyfriend."

Asked if he's dating anyone, Phelps said, "Part of my life is kept to myself. I'm able to relax and be with my friends. Those pretty much are the only people who really know the answer to that."

In an unrelated development,  Rice’s Olympic gold victory has apparently started to earn her moolah, for she has bagged a contract with Channel Seven. The glamour girl’s two-year deal with the television network is estimated to be worth 800,000 dollars.

Experts have predicted that Rice, who has been the most successful female swimmer at Beijing, may make up to 450,000 dollars per sponsorship deal.

Yelena Isinbayeva -Pole vault champion

Trash talk backfires at the Olympic pole vault

08/19/2008 | 09:40 AM

BEIJING – Yelena Isinbayeva got the Olympic gold and a world record; American Jenn Stuczynski got the silver and a lesson in humility.

And we now have a new rivalry that should make woman’s pole vaulting fun to watch for many more years to come.

Big poles and big mouths don’t go together. Stuczynski knows that now. Pole vaulting isn’t basketball or boxing. It’s far too graceful of a sport for the kind of trash-talk she doled out before the Beijing Games.

“I hope we do some damage," she had said, “and, you know, kick some Russian butt."

Big mistake.

Isinbayeva is Russian but she understands English just fine. The greatest women’s pole vaulter of all time heard Stuczynski’s challenge loud and clear.

“I am not deaf," she said. “It made me really angry."

Their head-to-head clash turned Monday night at the Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing into a showdown, with long poles instead of Don King.

First, some Cliffs Notes for those who didn’t tune into this saga, with its slightly musty Cold War whiff, in the run-up to the Olympics.

— Stuczynski: Tall, wholesome American, natural athlete; took up pole vaulting late, had a gift for it, quickly became second-best woman’s vaulter of all time, behind the Russian.

— Isinbayeva: Lithe former gymnast who switched to pole vault when she grew too tall as a teen, hasn’t looked back since. In a class of her own.

Like any good fight, the public announcer introduced the combatants first. Isinbayeva was presented last and got the crowd’s biggest roar. No mistaking who the Bird’s Nest was rooting for.

Isinbayeva is a bit like those supermodels who supposedly don’t get out of bed for anything less than a very lucrative photo shoot. Only when the bar has reached dizzying heights that most other vaulters can’t clear does Isinbayeva deign to take her first jump.

She’s just that good.

Monday night, her first jump was four meters 70 (15 feet, five inches). She soared right over. Seven of the 11 other vaulters had already dropped out by that point.

And so up the bar went, and up again. It’s that exquisite turning of the screw that makes pole vaulting so addictive to watch. Who’ll crack first?

Women’s pole vault has only been an Olympic sport since the Sydney Games in 2000. It was an instant crowd pleaser. Almost single-handedly thanks to Isinbayeva, the sport has grown by leaps and bounds since then. Stacy Dragila’s winning height in Sydney was 4.60 (15-1), which Stuczynski and Isinbayeva now sail over that in their sleep.

On Monday night, the last two hangers on dropped out with the bar at 4.80 (15-9), leaving Isi and Stu to fight it out for the gold alone.

The Russian won by KO. She cleared 4.85 (15-11). Stuczynski vaulted no higher than 4.80. Game over.

Almost.

With the whole stadium now eating out of her hand, Isinbayeva wasn’t going to stop there. The crowd had only seen her jump twice — that was all it had taken for her to defend her Olympic crown.

She wanted to give them more ... and perhaps rub that American nose just a little deeper in the dirt.

It was showtime. Isinbayeva-time. And that meant a world record.

First, she broke the Olympic record — her own, from Athens four years ago — as an appetizer.

Then, the bar went to a height it’s never been before, 5.05 (16-6 3/4).

She got it on the last of her three tries. She was celebrating even before she had fallen back to earth. She screamed. Clutched her face. Screamed some more. Did a forward somersault. Grabbed a Russian flag from someone in the crowd and set off on a lap of honor.

And that whole time, Stuczynski was made to wait, sitting on a row of plastic chairs, until Isinbayeva had cleared the magic height. It was the 24th time that the Russian had set a world record; she generally likes to eke them out one centimeter at a time.

Afterward, Stuczynski didn’t want to talk about her pre-game trash-talk, brushing off a question with an abrupt “OK, next."

It was her first Olympics and her first medal, “I couldn’t ask for anything more," she said.

Beaten but not cowed, she said she expects to catch Isinbayeva eventually.

“It’s just experience. She’s been in the Olympics before, she’s been in world championships, she’s jumped a decade longer than me, so it’s just a matter of time," she said.

Isinbayeva tried not to be smug. She had done what she had set out to do: let her vaulting do the talking.

“I just wanted to prove who is the best at the Olympic Games."

But she couldn’t resist one last little dig

“She must respect me and ... know her position," she said.

“Now she knows it."

So it will be an orgy involving blood, which will probably be new. Hmmm... some photographic evidence would be appreciated.

The Kings Orders prohibit any photographic evidence. Plus cant do it since families maybe involved. :)
