SL vs India (Progressive - who cares ) ODI 1 Match Thread
« on: August 13, 2008, 06:55:52 AM »
let's start on an auspicious note ;D

Mendis is not unplayable: Yuvraj
Cricketnext.com

Indian one-day vice-captain Yuvraj Singh, who has been vulnerable to quality spin in the past, said Sri Lanka’s new spin sensation Ajantha Mendis is not unplayable and with time the batsmen will master him.

"Mendis has really bowled well in the Tests and his confidence must be sky-high. Along with Muralitharan, they form a very potent attack but he is not unplayable and we are working on a gameplan to counter him during the One-Day series," Yuvraj Singh has been quoted as saying by The Times of India on Wednesday.

"We will try and play our natural game against him and see how it goes. He does not bowl at 150 kmph so there is no reason to be frightened of him. When Murali was new to international cricket, even he bothered many top batsmen and is still bothering them. But with time, batsmen learn more and adjust to the situations," added Yuvraj, who himself struggled against Murali in the early stages of his career.

Even the experienced Test side had brushed aside Mendis threat before the Test series but paid heavily when the plucky spinner went on to create a world record by claiming 25 wickets in a three-match Test series, which the hosts won 2-1.

However, Yuvraj said that he has been working hard in the nets and was trying out a few shots to counter the Lankan spinners.

"I should say I am ready for the one-day challenge. I have been working hard in the nets. I have also practiced some shots which I hope will help me counter the Lankan spinners," the stylish left hander said.

I think 50% of that was our tail.  ::zzz::
Which by the way seemed to start at No 3. during this series. :P

It is a little embarrassing to discuss the position of our tail, suffice to say that wherever it was the Lankans had it in their hands. :-X

Losing Sachin can prove to be crucial: Dhoni
- ODI captain hopes youngsters would make a difference in the series

A CORRESPONDENT

Colombo: Team India ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Wednesday said that it was difficult to fill in the shoes of batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, who was ruled out of the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka due to an injury

.

The following are excerpts:

On Sachin Tendulkar’s absence

It’s difficult to fill the space left by Sachin Tendulkar. It’s not just his contribution with bat and ball. He comes up with brilliant suggestions on the field. The impact he has on the dressing room is great. But cricket goes on. When this scenario has happened in Indian cricket, somebody has accepted responsibility. It’s one of the toughest places to play cricket, you don’t get loads of runs when batting, you have to work hard. It (Sachin’s absence) can be crucial.

On the side’s performances in the subcontinent

We haven’t been doing too badly. We lost crucial games, the final in Bangladesh, the Asia Cup final, so it may seem that way but the team has been consistent both in the subcontinent and outside.

His absence in the Test series

Physically, I was always ready, but I wasn’t a 100 per cent in practice, which sends a bad message to the rest of the side. If I would have continued, I might have been injured, prevention is better than cure they say. Physically I am more conditioned. I was off cricket.

Keeping wickets in Sri Lanka

Personally I feel Sri Lanka is one of the toughest places to keep wickets. I remember coming here (in 2005) and not having a great time, so I wouldn’t blame Dinesh (Karthik) or Parthiv (Patel).

Mystery surrounding Ajantha Mendis

I’d just like to ask Mahela (Jayawardene) if he will lend Mendis for a couple of practice sessions (Jayawardene smiles). If he’s saying he will not, then we will have to deal with it in a personal way.

no - this cannot be the basis to declare he has a SOH.  :P

i find dhoni usually talking a LOT during the toss interviews and many times says things quite tangential to the Q posed.

Yuvraj commenting on spin bowling, that too M&M! Man, he has put forth a bigger statement than Badri ("at least give me a chance to fail before sidelining me"). I can't wait to see whether the commitment is proven real or bluster. I didn't see his 172, but from the outside, his form looks ominous.

nah - this time, the 1st ODI just happens to coincide with the Aug 15 long weekend for which I had already taken Aug 18 off. I would not waste my leaves on ODIs ;). But a good time to mention that I'm taking 3 days off in Oct to watch Aus test match in Chinnaswamy stadium live  ;D ;D

Sehwag ruled out of the first ODI

NEW DELHI: Virender Sehwag has been ruled out of the first One-day International against Sri Lanka in Dambulla. The hard hitting batsman sustained an ankle injury during the practice session on Sunday.

Sir
this is a time to celebrate for some. Do not dilute the issue with Pinku stories  :nono:

The future captain of India makes an entry, in an unfamiliar position.

PS: My money says badri is sitting this one out.

Sehwag ruled out of the first ODI
17 Aug, 2008 2012hrs IST, PTI

DAMBULLA: Indian opener Virender Sehwag is doubtful for Monday's five-match series opener against Sri Lanka as the explosive opener sustained an ankle injury on Sunday.

Sehwag, who sustained the injury during practice on Sunday, if sits out, his Delhi teammate Virat Kohli is likely to take his place.

Sehwag was seen limping out of ground after the practice session.

Indian team management sources said a final call on the chances of Sehwag playing will be taken on Monday.
"If the swelling in his ankle subsides, why not play him?," a team management official said.

The left-handed Kohli, if selected, will make his debut for India. The Indian team is already without Sachin Tendulkar, who withdrew from the series after sustaining an elbow injury during the third and final Test.

India plays a five-match ODI series, beginning tomorrow, after losing the three-Test series 1-2.
