Russian Alla Kudryavtseva claimed a massive Wimbledon upset by knocking out number three seed and 2004 champion Maria Sharapova in the second round.

Sharapova, 21, was way off colour on Court One, losing 2-6 4-6 to record her worst Wimbledon performance.

The 20-year-old Kudryavtseva, ranked 154th in the world, has never won a WTA tournament and is in the third round at Wimbledon for the first time.

Kudryavtseva will now play China's Peng Shuai for a place in the last 16.

Isn't Tipsarevic the guy who gave a scare to Federer at the Aus open?? First time I have seen him ...looks very scholarly with his glasses ...resembles vettori to some extent!

Having said that, do we have any serve and volley player of note left in the game? Everyone seems to be slugging from the baseline these days.

i think the only server and volleyer left is the beast (Max Mirnyi), but he is not a player of note

"There is a danger that we will have only one type of player soon because everyone is growing up on courts that are roughly the same speed," he says. To underline the point: Federer's great rival, Rafael Nadal, is widely considered a clay-court specialist, but has still made the final at Wimbledon the last two years.

"There was a time when clay-court [specialists] wouldn't even make the trip [to England]," Bjorkman said after losing to Nadal at the Artois Championships, a warm-up event for Wimbledon. "Now they hardly even need to adjust their game."

Sad ...the best matches were always the ones between players of contrasting styles .. Becker-Lendl, Edberg-Lendl, Mcenroe-Lendl, Agassi-Sampras, Agassi-Becker, Ivanisevic-Agassi. Hardly get to see any such contests these days.

Sorry for the sudden attack of bold there but it's not often the world number one and top seed goes at at the third-round stage. Very composed performance from Zheng Jie but Ivanovic has a lot of learning to do on grass.
