Knight’s Dawn

If not for the IPL, Dinda’s progress would have been stalled by another two years

Cricket writer and scholar Ramachandra Guha presents an interesting analogy about the Bengali’s liking for new-ball bowling. He believes it could be a response to an attack on his self-esteem.

In 1843 Lord Macaulay wrote that the physical organisation of the Bengali, who lives in constant vapour bath, is feeble. So much so that he felt it was weak even to helplessness for purposes of manly resistance.

We know not why Ashoke Dinda took to fast bowling, but a look of dismay may come over him if he is told about Lord Macaulay’s prejudice.

The strong and wiry quickie from West Bengal’s Midnapore district has made himself heard in the IPL. It’s not the wickets or the skiddy pace that have catapulted Dinda to prominence. Those pressure-primed balls, bowled with a grunt louder than that of Andre Agassi, have been hurled at 137-142 kph.

“The IPL has been an unusual experience for me. I have never played before a capacity crowd like the one at Eden Gardens. I was nervous and it took a while to sink in that I was among a galaxy of stars,” Dinda told Mumbai Mirror.

AGAINST ALL ODDS

We have heard tales of sportsmen who love to throw themselves at the deep end, defying all odds. Probably Dinda belongs to that breed.

The first instance was when he defied his guardians who were keen that he opt for a career in the Indian Army. Ashoke is the youngest of four brothers. Before he could come of age he lost his father. Cricket was a luxury that his family could ill-afford. Cricket it would be, Dinda postured.

It was his material uncle who realised that he had been possessed by the game and directed him to a distinguished coach, Atal Dev Burman.

The second act of defiance was probably against himself. It happened in the 2005-06 Ranji Trophy season. Dinda decimated Mumbai with a five-for at the Wankhede Stadium. After those exhilarating scenes, he was promptly handed the rejection slip for the next match.

And it was not the only occasion when he ravaged the opposition single-handedly. He did it against Central Zone in the 2006 Duleep Trophy after East had suffered a first innings collapse. The same year he repeated the feat against Punjab when Sourav Ganguly was defending 147.

“Incidentally, it was Sourav who pressed for Dinda’s selection to the East Zone side,” Bengal’s ex-coach Paras Mhambrey reveals. “Dinda didn’t have a great track record before that but Sourav’s hunch was that he would deliver.”

Yet, quite ironically, Bengal has always taken a dim view of his talent.

Doing a reverse gear would have taken Dinda nowhere. And coming from a modest background, a “vapour bath” lifestyle was certainly not an option.

He baked himself in the sun and perfected his action. Earlier he used to jump out, landing wide on the crease that virtually negated the away swing. The straight leap and the late movement that we have been seeing in the IPL is the fruit of hours of toil.

Finally, this year, he chose to defy reputation. During a net session he needled Ricky Ponting to attack him. That Dinda managed to shush his blade is only part of the story. He did one better by getting him out twice, not in the outfield but caught behind. “Boy you have some pace,” Ponting beamed.

It earned him a berth in the Knight Riders eleven, ahead of the more illustrious Ranadeb Bose.
Perhaps if not for the IPL his progress would have been stalled by another two years.

LONG WAY TO GO

“When I saw him first he was all strength and no imagination,” coach Burman re-lives the memory of a 15-year-old Dinda. “I was charmed by his raw aggression and fierce will to do well. And he brooked no fear,” he says. “I convinced the captain of High Court Club Pradeep Pandey and their coach Debu Mitra that they have a look at him. They didn’t regret having him in the squad despite the fact that they had a settled unit. That year they won the second division league.”

Burman however believes that Dinda is far from a finished article. There are times when he strives for the extra yard of pace, only to stray.

“He may have got three wickets against Deccan Chargers but I told him that he gave Adam Gilchrist too much width,” Burman says. “He still needs to get the pitching right for the outgoing delivery. Having moved to a different league he will learn.”

very poignant article.

a point to note that debu mitra (moitra  to spell his name correctly) is the biggest fraud in the bengal set up. he has killed many a youngster and if given a chance would have killed DINDA as well. Dinda was lucky that he bypassed the bengal coaching set up.

heard that he took part in that Pace bowling hunt that was judged by Javagal Srinath... believe he just took a chance... infact borrowed shoes from some one to participate...

Also understand that when SG was asked why Bengal has been relegated to Plate division, he remarked that any team that can drop Dinda would obviously face that fate...
and that SG and Ponting jointly pushed for Dinda's inclusion in the IPL team..he did not have a contract ..but SG promised everything will be taken care of....

I like the way SG takes care of his team mates.

Where did this flash come from?  Can you ask your God Dravid why he did not let you play for India (in spite of your unconditional love)?  Why didn't Dravid allow Bose , Pujara , Lahiri , Hokkaido and Yashpal Singh to play for India?  Why?

Did Dravid pay it from his pocket?  If he took care of his friend exploiting somebody else's money and ambition, it is unethical.

Dave ... This is only a rejoinder to an otherwise stupid notion that has been posted... I do not believe that RD can be unethical... I shudder to even think of using those words on him or any of our other icons or ayone for that matter w/o concrete evidence...

So...let's not take this forward anymore... again..the message... it is not difficult to fabricate issues to show someone in poor light...it is not a specific individual's domain... but, frankly, should we go down that path... I don't think so... let's avoid irrelevant posters and their posts and move on...we have been here long enough to know who is here and what is their agenda

let's imagine SG had retained them(bose, lahiri) - what would the choir sing? "geez, SG is so parochial".  ;D

wish the comics weren't so predictable and boring!

For your kind info , joshi has more then 800 wickets in all form of domestic games and hence was given an oppurtunity. What is unethical abt taking so many wickets , the fact that you can never ever shout yourself hoarse abt Bose from now onwards as he does not seem to be good enough to play for his city forget playing for the country . Did you see Mishra bowl in this IPL , he was yet another talent destroyed by Ganguly in his obsession with HS.

How many tests/ODIs did Mishra played under Dravid's captaincy?

I am responding to his lesson on morals that we had to sit through for couple of days.  The point is that anybody can twist things any way he likes and present - so what's the point of distorting and lying?

As somebody said, why not Kapil Dev, Gavaskar?   You can check the average and confirm if they are better player than Joshi.

Mishra was doing very well in the domestic season and finnally got a   deserved promotion into the team in 2004 . But he hardly got a chance to prove himself ,
Mishra was called into a large Indian squad for the West Indies series at home in October 2002, but was disappointed not to be given a chance. The absence of several senior players after the World Cup led to another call-up for the TVS Cup in Dhaka in April 2003. Since then, though, he has dropped off the selectors' radar, only resurfacing in 2007 . By the time Dravid became the captain Piyush Chawla had come into the horizon and he was given a fair amount of chances by Dravid .

And when did I shout hoarse for Bose' inclusion?  Can you show me?  Don't make statement out of the air.  KKR is a franchise based out of Kolkata.  Players are not playing for the city but for the franchise.  Are you writing new rule book on domestic cricket?  I thought that you are already overloaded with the task of writing the software that will automatically select Indian team (based on averages).  We will end up with an earth-shattering Indian team with Somasundar, Partha Sarathi Sharma, Joginder Sharma, Devang *hi, and all.

But it still does not explain why Dravid did not include Mishra in his team. Or may be he wanted to protect his old state buddy Kumble? ::)

A man who is considered the greatest match winner India ever produced needed protection . How cruel , this just shows your obvious hatred towards all other Indian players other then Ganguly . Now let me see what sort of answers you will give for the following players .
Nehra 17 tests 44 wickets - what a great record
Yuvraj Singh 100 ODI's avg 27 - simply awesome average
Parthiv Patel - average of 3 dropped chances in every test match
Deep Das Gupta - the father of Parthiv Patel in keeping
Harbhajan Singh - stopped performing after 2001 series against austrailia
And these are just samples of players who were protected by your great Dada.

No Mr Flashpan, that Ganguly is evil is a given. I just want to know why was Mishra not picked by Dravid/Kumble? Was it because Mishra is a far better spinner of the ball, had youth on his side, was a relatively better batsman than some 'great match winner", and so that 'great match winner" needed protecting. Was dravid doing for  Kumble, and Kumble for himself what Dravid has done for Joshi this IPL season? >:(

Since it was proven by the time Dravid arrived as captain that Yuvi and Bhaaji are no good, how dumb can Dravid be to select them all over again?  Even his rabid follower knows more than him anout cricket and captaincy.

didn't RD fight tooth and nail to retain Sehwag, another one protected by SG? wonder why!

incidentally, even Dhoni uses HS as his potent spinner. why? why? why? are they ALSO as evil as SG?

For your kind info , Yuvraj Singh was dropped for one match by RD in SL and only then he started to perform . Why , the hell would anybody drop a player if he is  performing . HS was never the favoured bowler overseas by Dravid  as he knew who would do better and AK rewarding his faith in him by winning him 2 overseas victories as well as the first ever test win by India in SA , the spade work done by a stunning spell by another Dravid discovery , Sreesanth . Has HS ever won us a test series away from from home to justify his skippers faith in him . Infact even in Austrailia Kumble was the man who did the work for his country despite being treated shabbily by his then cappo. What has this in relation to the IPL . Mishra is better then Kumble , this must be the biggest joke of the century , he was however much better then HS and sadly was  not recognised by Ganguly.

yeh Dave , tell this to Bose , Pujara , Lahiri , Hokkaido and Yashpal Singh . They will collaborate this fact further.

As Sunil Joshi does about RD post $30000

I am responding to his lesson on morals that we had to sit through for couple of days.  The point is that anybody can twist things any way he likes and present - so what's the point of distorting and lying?

I completely agree... but, horse...water...drink.... get my point  ;)

HS:

Season      M         O            M            R            W          Avg            SR

So this is the performance (domestic) of Amit Mishra & HS Singh who SG had protected and thereby denied Mishra.

Since HS was on international duty, they have not played the same number of matches. So a good comparison is a) average b) SR and c) Wickets per match. First AM and then HS with the better performer in red:

Season           Average                       SR                 Wkts per match
00-01           30.59 / 18.21          75.68 / 39.23            4.4 / 6.4
01-02           24.09 / 20.08          55.48 / 37.85            4.6 / 6.5
02-03           22.75 / 16.75          42.13 / 49.80            5.3 / 6.7
03-04           35.63 / 42.30          74.25 / 95.40            2.7 / 3.3
04-05           20.93  / 28.67         54.15  / 54.00           4.1 / 6.0
Total             25.25 / 20.72           57.44 / 46.32             4.2 / 6.0

Indeed, HS didnt deserve to be there  ::) ::) and Amit Mishra's claims were denied by SG   :icon_scratch: :o

Again, you have come to this DG to spread lies and again you have been caught with your pants down. Time to go home my friend -- better luck next time, Ebar Bapi Bari Jaa

So what , HS was failing and failing misreably in each and every overseas tours and it was the right oppurtunity to provide chances to others . Just yesterday you villified Sujith Somsunder by saying that domestic leagues should never be the criteria for selection into the national team but now you go back to the same domestic league to substantiate your illogical claims . Who is fooling whom .

you know I know this is an alien concept for you, but for once show some honesty, some integrity, and some decency.

Start by STOP LYING.

At no point did I villify Somsunder by saying domestic leagues should not be the criteria for selection in the national team. I used the same domestic figures you were quoting to conclusively show SG was not a quota candidate.

I CHALLENGE YOU TO FIND THAT QUOTE THAT YOU ARE ACCUSING ME OF. IF YOU CANT AND I KNOW YOU WONT

1) HAVE THE DECENCY TO APOLOGIZE FOR ACCUSING ME FALSELY

2) HAVE THE DECENCY TO RETRACT YOUR ALLEGATION ABOUT SG BEING A QUOTA CANDIDATE

3) NOW THAT YOUR LATEST ABOUT HARBHAJAN AND AMIT MISHRA HAS BEEN CONCLUSIVELY PROVED WRONG, HAVE THE DECENCY AND THE HONESTY TO APOLOGIZE FOR MAKING ANOTHER FALSE ACCUSATION.

AGAIN, AS DIFFICULT A CONCEPT THIS MAY BE FOR YOU, HAVE SOME SHAME, DEVELOP SOME COURAGE, BACKBONE AND A CHARACTER.

This is the breakdown of each and every foriegn tour that India undertook from 2001 -2006. Let us see wheater it was good enough not to be dropped .

 v/s Zim 2001 HS       2  103.4   25   233   8  29.12  4-71   -  -  77.7  2.24

 v/s SL 2001  HS        3   98     21   292   4  73.00  2-185  -  - 147.0  2.97

v/s SA 2001   HS        1   54      8   168   3  56.00  2-79   -  - 108.0  3.11

v/s WI 2002   HS       3  140.2   23   388  14  27.71  5-138  1  -  60.1  2.76

v/s Eng 2002   HS      3  135.4   23   410  12  34.16  5-115  1  -  67.8  3.02

v/s NZ 2003  HS        2   36      5    94   5  18.80  2-20   -  -  43.2  2.61

v/s Aus 2003 HS        1   35      2   169   1 169.00  1-101  -  - 210.0  4.82

v/s  Pak 2003 HS       ------------------------------------------------------

v/s Ban  2004 HS        2   47.4    9   165   4  41.25  2-19   -  -  71.5  3.46

v/s Zim 2005  HS      2   57.5    9   186    6  31.00  4-59   -  -  57.8  3.21

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total               HS    19    707.1   125  2105 57  36.93  5-115  2   0  74.44

Do you really think these are outstanding figures and there was no competetion for his slot in the test team . 57 wickets in 19 tests comes to exactly 3 wickets per match . So your prime spinner picks up 3 wickets per match and leaves the rest for the others to pick up.

Sorry , Kban it was not you but one of your ilk who kept on saying that Somsunder and Johnson got into the team by reapeatedly going to the home of GRV.

With regard to SG being called  a quota candidate , I never said it directly , I quoted ex-cricketers to have told that . Pls question the honesty of those ex-cricketers.

With regard to HS , I have already given the proof that he was not indisposable if not for the closeness of his captain , I gave Amit Mishra as just an example of the injustice meted out to many players by Ganguly  With regard to RD not selecting Amit Mishra , it was not required then Kumble was winning us series abroad and the emergence of Powar and Chawla as good support also made sure that HS was dropped from the team unlike Ganguly who kept on giving chances after vhances to non-performers just because they were loyal to him .
