Vijay Mallya upset with Rahul Dravid

Please remove it if already posted .
Couple of things I really wonder -

1. Mallaya had put money in clubs before also .Never I heard him being so vocal about team issues ...whether it is Football of F1. I dont agree with Mallaya firing Charu, but at the same time makes me wonder why is he so pissed off  when cricket is concerned??

NEW DLEHI: The internal bickering of the Bangalore Royal Challengers is out in the open with team owner Vijay Mallya revealing that he was at loggerheads with captain Rahul Dravid and the outfit's sacked CEO Charu Sharma over players' selection for the Indian Premier League. ( Watch )

Mallya made it clear that he was not happy with the squad, currently languishing at the bottom of the IPL points table, which has been ridiculed as a Test team in Twenty20 jersey.

The liquor baron said he had some players in mind but Dravid and Sharma completely ignored them and went ahead with their own plan.

"I had my own list (of players) but the fact is Rahul Dravid and Charu Sharma had their own list and at the end of the day, I decided to take the back seat," Mallya told a news channel.

"I was very tempted to bid for players whom I wanted but they held me back. Obviously things have turned out differently," he said.

He said Sharma backed Dravid to the hilt and even in the second auction, where the captain was not present, the former CEO discouraged Mallya to buy players of his choice.

"When Rahul Dravid was not present in the second auction, I wanted to acquire some players but Charu Sharma was very tentative about them. I mean I bought Misbah-ul Haq because I was determined to do it. There were other players I was discouraged about," Mallya said.

On sacking Sharma and replacing him with former Test player Brijesh Patel, Mallya said, "Charu Sharma was appointed CEO because I thought he understood cricket and he would add value to the team and the entire Royal Challengers initiative."

Mallya said Patel's appointment was necessitated because he was tired of complaints that the team did not have good practice facilities in its base in Bangalore.

"When I was questioning the performance of the team, all I was told was that practice facilities are bad, then I was told there was no bonding in the team...so everything was blamed on a particular event or lack of infrastructure.
(If this is true...I will blame captain mainly for this )
"So I said to myself things can't continue like this and I brought Brijesh Patel. He is the honourable secretary of the KSCA (Karnataka State Cricket Association) and who better a person to provide match facilities and whatever else the team needs at its base in Bangalore. He understands cricket as well," Mallya explained.

The flamboyant liquor-baron also made it clear that IPL had an unmistakable corporate face, which makes it evidently distinct from other tournaments.

"At the end of the day, people need to understand that the IPL has a corporate side to it, and a very definitive corporate side. It is not at all cricket in the traditional sense," he added.

Now that the team's semifinal hopes have gone up in smoke, Mallya expects Dravid and his teammates to win a few matches to salvage some pride.

"I want from Rahul Dravid to do the best for the team and to produce some good results for us because I don't think Rahul Dravid enjoys being at the bottom of the league tables, and certainly I don't." Mallya added.

--This sounds like a threat!!!

Mallya mauls ‘boss’ Dravid

OUR BUREAU AND AGENCIES

May 12: What Greg Chappell did to Sourav Ganguly through a leaked email, Vijay Mallya has now done to Rahul Dravid openly.

The Bangalore Royal Challengers owner has said he made his “biggest mistake” by trusting Dravid’s judgement — and that of sacked CEO Charu Sharma — in picking the team.

Mallya said he had a different set of players in mind but Dravid and Sharma ignored them at the Indian Premier League auctions. The Challengers, now at the bottom of the table, have been ridiculed as a “Test team” in Twenty20 clothing.

“My biggest mistake was to abstain from the selection. I had a separate list of players but since Dravid is such an iconic player I trusted his judgement. And Charu Sharma also backed him. I was very tempted to bid for players whom I wanted but they held me back,” Mallya told the print and electronic media.

He added: “I backed them thinking they advised me properly. Obviously, things have turned out differently. Unfortunately in cricket, unlike in any other sport, the captain is the boss.”

Mallya said that even in the second auction, where Dravid was not present, Sharma had discouraged him from buying players of his choice.

“I wanted to acquire some players but Charu Sharma was very tentative about them. I bought Misbah-ul Haq because I was determined to do it. There were other players I was discouraged about.”

Team sources said the comments wouldn’t help at a time morale was down after seven defeats in nine games, including tonight’s nine-wicket thrashing by Kings XI Punjab.

“There are fears that Dravid may put in his resignation — he’s very sensitive to criticism,” a former Indian player said.

Sharma, too, appeared to pass the buck to Dravid. He denied Mallya’s charges by saying he had no role in player selection. “How could you think I would have a say when you have great players like Dravid and Anil Kumble in the side?”

Mallya explained he had brought Brijesh Patel in as Sharma’s replacement to stop the team’s excuses. “When I was questioning performance, all I was told was that practice facilities are bad, (that) there was no bonding in the team.”

“He (Patel) is the honourable secretary of the KSCA (Karnataka State Cricket Association) and who better a person to provide match facilities and whatever else the team needs in Bangalore?”

Such a sorry state of affairs

and for Dravid to have himself maligned thus openly -- he should resign forthwith and get it over with.

the money is just not worth it to go through this blame game crap.

yes, he made mistakes but its also noteworthy that not a single player in his team has played well enough to support him (as in justified their selections).

On a different note, its apt that Vijay Mallya brought in cheerleaders from the washington redskins -- they, I am sure can relate to the impatient "shop today,  axe tomorrow" antics of mallya, having watched the upstart owner of the redskins, Daniel Snyder do the same.

Will take a lot lot lot of guts to walk away from $1mm per year and associated endorsements. Should resign the captaincy and maybe stay as a player/brand ambassador - if this option is available to him per his contract

Accountability is alright but VM should have restrained from public comments on RD. It would be embarrassing for RD to continue after all this. He should resign immediately. VM and RD are two opposite personality and as things going wrong it was bound to happen. I feel sorry for RD.

A part of me feels sorry for RD. Another part of me is thrilled. These cricketers (SG,RD,SRT and the lesser ones) are the biggest bunch of spoilt incompetent people in the world. It is time somebody brought them down to earth and made it clear that they earn money as entertainers. No more no less. They please us and get paid. They are entitled to nothing if they do not.

There is no point saying BCCI forced them -- if they could opt out of the WC they could opt out here. They chose to try out in this circus for money and not much else. They deserve all the brickbats if they fail. I hope SG, SRT, VVS, YS, MSD and everyone else gets as big a kick in their behinds if they fail. Yes, publicly. I do not see them saying "this is too much" when riches are heaped on them after meager successes. I hope they take this as being part of the deal.

Hats off to Mallya. Somebody had to bell the cat.

money isn't everything in this world - am sure RD (or any of other icons) can live a more than comfortable life without this "extra" couple of millions.

why is it a question of guts?

I agree money isnt everything in this world.. but amount like this does buy a lot of security - which is now available to RD and his family for probably generations to come .. say whatever, it does take guts to walk away from an amount that could change his and his family's life for a considerable period.

i would think they are all "secure" already. i don't view an already rich person turning away money as "guts". if things aren't working out, it should be the most natural thing to do.

Oh absolutely. I have no intention of defending VM's methods. However, you must agree that the team that the mgmt chose was ridiculous. People made fun of that team in this DG from day one -- very diff IMO from the Deccan situation. You make that sort of a blunder (and arrogantly, if VM is to be believed), you get called out loudly. If SG selected Ranadeb Bose as his star bowler instead of (and for the same money as) Ishant, he would hear it too. There are errors and there are Himalayan bunders.

Secure? Rahul's grandchildren are secure. SG's were before he played a day in the big league.

More like utter greed, IMO. Not that I have a problem with it. Just be ready to face the brickbats when you fail.

on another note, how much "security" is needed for the next generation? i think there should only be a bare minimum kept in some trust to cover the basic needs and let the children make their own future.

Well, they have great role models in the Nehru family and other luminaries like the great Comrade Jyoti Basu.
In short, no amount is enough, they always *need* more. The other Rahul's unborn grandkids are set for life even though this Rahul never worked a day in his life. We are like that wonly.

There was a one hour interview on CNBC with Warren Buffet, the second richest man who has donated $31 billion to charity. Here are some very interesting aspects of his life:

1. He bought his first share at age 11 and he now regrets that he started too late!

2. He bought a small farm at age 14 with savings from delivering newspapers.

3. He still lives in the same small 3-bedroom house in mid-town Omaha , that he bought after he got married 50 years ago. He says that he has everything he needs in that house. His house does not have a wall or a fence.

4. He drives his own car everywhere and does not have a driver or security people around him.

5. He never travels by private jet, although he owns the world's largest private jet company.

6. His company, Berkshire Hathaway, owns 63 companies. He writes only one letter each year to the CEOs of these companies, giving them goals for the year. He never holds meetings or calls them on a regular basis. He has given his CEO's only two rules. Rule number 1: do not lose any of your share holder's money. Rule number 2: Do not forget rule number 1.

7. He does not socialize with the high society crowd. His past time after he gets home is to make himself some pop corn and watch Television.

8. Bill Gates, the world's richest man met him for the first time only 5 years ago. Bill Gates did not think he had anything in common with Warren Buffet. So he had scheduled his meeting only for half hour. But when Gates met him, the meeting lasted for ten hours and Bill Gates became a devotee of Warren Buffet.

9. Warren Buffet does not carry a cell phone, nor has a computer on his desk.

His advice to young people : "Stay away from credit cards and invest in yourself and
Remember:

A. Money doesn't create man but it is the man who created money.
B. Live your life as simple as you are.
C. Don't do what others say, just listen to them, but do what makes you feel good.
D. Don't go on brand name; just wear those things in which you feel comfortable.
E. Don't waste your money on unnecessary things; just spend on things that you really need.
F. After all it's your life, then why give others the chance to rule your life."

"No one can make you feel inferior without your permission, remember they are no better. "

On a serious note, I think this had to happen at some point of time. IPL is going to be marked by an entrepreneurial, 'hire and fire' tenacity that is the hallmark of professionally managed teams in the NBA of NFL. Unlike a public sector behemoth like BCCI, which is reminiscent of state monopolistic practices in a protectionist Nehruvian dispensation, the IPL teams are owned by powerful investors who are in there for the money, and more so, in a competitive market. They will fire unless you walk the talk.

Especially in the 20/20 IPL world, the concept of the icon player, for all practical purposes, is an early marketing gesture to bring people to the stands. This is not a feudal way of showing respect to senior players who have done so much for our country. For seniors and their fans the entire thing might look like a glorified retirement package, a sort of 'benefit tournament' for greats who are clearly no longer cut out for this version of the game, but the actual truth is different. From a cold, management point of view, once the task of giving an initial boost to the event is accomplished with the marquee names, the terms of engagement gradually become level. A Dravid or a Ganguly might get people to come to the grounds or switch on their TV sets for the first game, but after a David Hussey or a Shane Watson that charms them, the playing field becomes more even. When the IPL itself becomes religion, the demi-gods can be frankly asked to pull their weights as captains or players. This is what has happened to Dravid.

There doesnt seem enough depth for Indians to fill the 7 spots in each of 8 teams.  Maybe they will increase the overseas quota to 5 (or maybe even 6) out of 11 next year.   Otherwise the quality wont be quite as good as it could be.

All true, CLR. However I do not think the main problem is RD not pulling his weight as bat or captain. VM realizes that the team was hamstrung by the selection, and was doomed to fail. That is a far bigger obstacle than someone losing form.

Someone gere reported that RD had none-too-flattering things to say about T20 in general. While I am in total agreement with RD, I can afford to express such an opinion. He can not, but did, to a stranger. Would you like your captain to do it, if you owned a team?

On that note, DC which was touted to be the best team,is now fighting for the last spot with BRC...If anyone, it should be the managemnet of Deccan Chronicle that should be going hammer and tongs at their team..

In Mallya's case, it is more the friends who made fun of his team that has hit Mallya in the unmentionables...  :D

I would be surprised if any of the top notch players opt to play for Mallya's team in the next version. He will have to atleast double the fees to attract good talent...but will he attract people with self-respect is the moot point.

One thing for sure...the entire Indian team will rally around RD on this... after the HS-SS issue, one does feel they would not want anymore of these issues having an effect in the dressing room

let me understand this ... is this the same prfsr who got so offended on a post about Ganguly that he quit the DG and even the resident evil of the DG like me modified and deleted the said post to (try to) make him happy?

I guess we have different standards for Ganguly and a new set for Dravid. Very nice. That clank was someone falling from a pedestal!

All true, CLR. However I do not think the main problem is RD not pulling his weight as bat or captain. VM realizes that the team was hamstrung by the selection, and was doomed to fail. That is a far bigger obstacle than someone losing form.

What Mr.Malya is talking about selection problem is purely hindsight speaking. Except not having a good opener BRC team was as good as any other team. I guess RD backed himself to open and score and that is obviously a huge mistake. Rest of the team is not too  bad. RD is pulling his weight as a batman. he is the highest scorer in the team with a decent strike rate.

Maybe I am wrong... I have walked out of two well paying jobs because
1) it impaired the independence the role required and
2) required ego massaging of people...

Buffett once commented, "I want to give my kids just enough so that they would feel that they could do anything, but not so much that they would feel like doing nothing"

his children inherit a tiny fraction of his wealth - the rest is going to charity.

10 Things the Wealthy Should Leave Their Kids — Besides Money

When it comes to understanding the dysfunctions of wealthy families, Peter White is among the wisest. He’s spent more than 20 years counseling wealthy parents and privileged children about how to better understand the adverse effects of wealth and to search for more meaningful lives. He’s plied his trade at his own firm, as well as at Citi Private Bank and U.S. Trust.

I met up with Peter at a wealth retreat in California last week. During his speech, he casually mentioned a list he created of the 10 things parents should provide for their children, which he called “The 10 Elements of Care.” The audience – mainly wealthy investors — wanted to know more, so Peter ticked off the list.

The list isn’t just for rich parents. But as Peter told me, it’s helpful for wealthy parents to learn that “the first thing to be concerned with is loving children in a way that enables them to take charge of their lives as adults, so they can use wealth to enhance, not diminish, their lives.”

He acknowledges that, like all such lists, it’s both “incomplete and overly inclusive.” But since I found it illuminating, I present it here:

THE 10 ELEMENTS OF CARE by Peter White

1. Necessaries — food, clothing, shelter, medical attention, basic education.

2. Affection — This involves “the great big person who takes care of me opening him or herself to me, making him or herself vulnerable and human in a way, connecting with me physically and in spirit, and thus affirms my significance as a person.”

3. Affirmation and Support — This is basically about expressing sincere belief in the child: “You want to be a cheerleader – or a doctor or an astronaut – and you can do it!”

4. Boundaries — Peter says that “we are living in an age where the lack of boundaries for children is epidemic. Boundaries, of course, reflect a closing value – that certain, reasonably well-defined behaviors are unacceptable, and that when these behaviors occur, unpleasant consequences will result.”

5. Guidance — “Telling and showing children how to cope, how to deal, how to create, how to succeed. Guidance involves how-to techniques such as how to do the dishes or drive a car but at essence guidance is about beliefs — belief in the sense of action motivated and circumscribed by values held by the parents. In the wealth context, guidance on budgeting is essential, and guidance on philanthropy, which may come from participating in family philanthropy together as a group, are good examples. Parents of wealthy kids are worried about passing their values to their children, but they needn’t worry about that if they are present to them, in quality and non-quality times.”

6. Respect — “This is really about listening. It is respectful to listen seriously to what the other person is saying seriously and to empathize with what the other is feeling genuinely.”

7. Trust — This means “relying on the other to act responsibly,” and to allow someone the opportunity to do the wrong thing.

8. Forgiveness — This is not about the glib “I forgive you.” “Forgiveness does not erase the hurt; by definition, it feels the hurt but decides to carry on the relationship despite the hurt.”

9. Religion or Spirituality — “My experience over the last 20 years tells me that children raised in an environment of religion tend to be more in touch with themselves than those who are not. When I use the word religion, I am not referring only to the organized religions — though I am not excluding them either — but I am speaking about an aspiration to higher and enduring truth.”

10. Letting Go — This is the most difficult and along with Necessaries and Affection, the most important. We must say to our kids, ‘I’ve done the lion’s share of the motherly or fatherly work, and I’m here and will be here for you as long as I can be; but the responsibility for you is now yours.’ ”

“So many entrepreneurs don’t like what they see when their kids turn 21 and now they’ve got time to fix it; but, generally speaking, they shouldn’t fix it,” he says. “This is love: resisting the temptation to take care of people who should be taking care of themselves.”

You bet. The Catholic Church here is god's own land was all about allowing kids to be more in touch with themselves.

Nice list, just wish he had excluded this point, even with the spirituality clarification thrown in.

I think it depends on what constitutes self respect. I think it is a subjective metric.

(i think)it depends on how much money means to some one and how contented one is with what he/she has. there are quite a few who are happy with what they have and aren't motivated to compromise and earn more.

There is limit to what money can buy..........................your self-respect aside, you cannot barter away your family members for money ( Indecent Proposal, notwithstanding).
