WICB bans Samuels for two years
CNN-IBN

New Delhi: West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels has been banned for two years by the West Indies Cricket Board after he was found guilty of breaching regulations after a probe into allegations of having links with a bookmaker.

Samuels, 27, is now out of the game under a mandatory two-year ban which is effective from May 9 unless the International Cricket Council (ICC) offers him a reprieve.

The WICB said their disciplinary committee had found that Samuels had breached Level 4 of the ICC's Code of Conduct in that he "received money, benefit or other reward which could bring him or the game of cricket into disrepute."

Justice done, says cop who nailed Samuels

Mumbai Mirror Bureau

Former Nagpur Police Commissioner, SPS Yadav, who investigated the telephonic conversation between West Indian cricketer Marlon Samuels and a Dubai-based bookie, Mukesh Kochar, is happy that with West Indies Cricket Board is set to ban the cricketer for two years.

“Justice has been done to our investigations which exposed a breach of conduct (by the West Indian player). I am satisfied,” Yadav said reacting to the development.

According to media reports, The WICB found sufficient evidence to charge Samuels for allegedly passing on team information to Kochar during the first ODI between the West Indies and India in Nagpur on January 21 last year.

The hearing was conducted by the West Indies Cricket Board’s (WICB) Code of Ethics and Disciplinary Committee. It was chaired by former acting Chief justice of eastern Caribbean, Adrian Saunders and also had players like Courtney Walsh and Richie Richardson as members.

According to Yadav, the issue was tricky since a foreign national and a person who was not in Nagpur was involved in the conversation tapped by Nagpur Police. But since the match took place in Nagpur, the local Police got involved. Moreover, the issue was delicate since the International Cricket Council (ICC) was also involved. “Yet all this was possible due to the impeccable investigations by Nagpur Police,” he said.

Yadav said that Nagpur Police always keeps surveillance whenever cricket matches take place in Nagpur. “It was not for the first time during the Samuel issue that Nagpur Police had kept a watch on cricketers. Nagpur Police has been doing it every time there was a match,” Yadav added.
