IPL 2008 - Match 16 : KKR vs Mumbai Indians : Match Thread
« on: April 28, 2008, 08:16:52 PM »
Can the Indians win or will they go down 0-5? Will RP score runs in his last IPL game this season? Do the curators at Eden have their act together? Will the lights work throughout the game?

Yes - that's the guy - those little things (that programme) brought so much joy in the past.

Riders look for breezy win

Kolkata, April 28: Down and almost out, Mumbai Indians will take on Kolkata Knight Riders in their Indian Premier League match at the Eden Gardens here on Tuesday with resurrection being the theme for the beleaguered outfit, but the only man who can provide the necessary impetus is still uncertain for the tie.

Yes, Sachin Tendulkar is steadily recovering from a groin injury that has rendered him hors de combat since the second Test against South Africa. The batting maestro is trying his best to be fit for Tuesday’s match and according to the team physio, there is an outside chance he might make it. "His fitness report will come tomorrow morning and will decide accordingly," Mumbai Indian coach Lalchand Rajput told this newspaper.

If Tendulkar plays, then equations can change very fast. The match then gets a different dimension altogether, as a clash between Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly is always a mouth-watering prospect. Without Tendulkar, however, the Mumbai Indians will have to start as underdogs.

The Indians need to get their batting right. The problem is, their top order is not firing. The onus is on Sanath Jayasuriya to get his side out of the woods. At 39, the Sri Lankan may have past his prime, but still has the ability to change the course of a match in five overs. With Harbhajan Singh suspended for 11 matches, he will have to come good with his left-arm orthodox spin as well.

The middle order also needs some re-thinking. Young Abhishek Nayar, the only silver lining in an otherwise very subdued effort, is wasted at number six. With 101 runs, at a strike rate of 150-plus, the 25-year-old from Secunderabad deserves a promotion in the batting order so that he gets the chance to plan his innings. And it’s high time Robin Uthappa raise his hand to be counted.

As far as bowling is concerned, Dilhara Fernando or Lasith Malinga may make an entry. Their extra pace could be a factor on an Eden Gardens wicket that has sprinkling of grass. After the pitch fiasco in the match against the Deccan Chargers, BCCI pitches and grounds committee head Daljit Singh took charge and he is satisfied with the strip that will be used on Tuesday.

The wicket has been watered rigorously and it appears to be firm and is likely to offer good carry. The evening breeze may also allow some swing.

Knight Riders, on the other hand, are still pretty confident despite their loss to the Chennai Super Kings. However, that defeat may ring in some changes in the line-up. Umar Gul has been included in the squad and is likely to play.

The hosts have batting problems of their own. Save Bredon McCullum, nobody has had a decent outing in the middle. Ricky Ponting is under pressure with back-to-back noughts against his name. This match will be his last in this edition of the IPL and Ponting will want to redeem himself, much as Adam Gilchrist did for the Chargers on Sunday. Skipper Ganguly’s form too is a cause of major concern. Completely outwitted by Muttiah Muralitharan the other day, the Bengal left-hander needs to get act together quickly.

Meanwhile, work is in full swing at the Eden Gardens which has grabbed the spotlight for all the wrong reasons of late.

Hectic efforts are being made to ensure uninterrupted power. The previous tie had to be halted for 31 minutes when two light towers went off.

There were also complaints of lack of adequate drinking water and unclean washrooms, but the authorities have promised that such lapses would not be repeated.

Gayle ruled out of IPL

Kolkata, April 28: Chris Gayle has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League after an MRI revealed a hairline crack in his groin, reports our correspondent.

The West Indies captain, who joined the Knight Riders late and did not play a match owing to injury, was taken to the Apollo Gleneagles hospital on Monday evening. Gayle sustained this injury during the home ODI series against Sri Lanka earlier this month.

Gayle is likely to return home in a few days time.

Hairline crack in his Groin???!?!?!?! The groin region has multiple bones, Mainly the bones of the leg and the pelvic bone. I hope its not the latter. If it is he is F*****d. Or rather wont be for a long time.

btw...this Gony is looking ok so far........but only by our lowly Indian standards...we are used to seeing Gursharan Singh, Kumaran, VRV etc.
I think, he is basically an ordinary bowler................my way of ascertaining this is easy.....I just think, if I can play this bowler or not.........if the answer is 'yes'.......then obviously, he isn't great shakes! :D

But Ishaant is quite a handful...

depends on what situation they are playing him in.
yes...he may get the nod for Indian trials by the current looks........but I am not very sure, if he is genuine international material yet or not.

Gony is looking very good - bowling back of length, getting good bounce and clocks 130-137. Things to improve upon are slower ball, consistency, and good yorker. He should play soon, I agree. But never heard of him before - has he been good in Ranjis?

First-class 5 9 1056 618 13 3/86 5/136 47.53 3.51 81.2 0 0 0
Figures look awful . Should be playing domestic cricket or the next 2 years without coming anywhere near the national team . If performance in T 20 is any criteria for selection into the test team then our team will be full of Yuvrajs , Dhonis , Joginder Sharmas etc with no place for players like Dravids , Gangulys , Sachins and Lamans.

See...I haven't seen his figures earlier.......he looks rather ordinary.
But that doesn't mean he cannot deliver the goods in the near future.
His show in this limited tournament has been rather good.

he looked like he had a good action from what i saw in ranji but i doubt he took many wickets. but i think the basic ingredients, the height, strength and simple action...are there. he has gotten leaner since the ranji and added a bit of pace.

btw his ranji odi stats are awesome.

i think he will play for India not because of his stats etc. but because he is playing in Dhoni's team and he is being noticed.

He will face competition in the near terms even for an ODI berth. I think VRV is a better bowler than Gony....and yet he is nowhere near the qualification scene.

This match will also test for SJ price .
Failure means 4 in a row for this player.
If RU + SJ get to stay 15 overs among themselves. I think Mumbai may get one.
What is the pitch like ? Is it same as last time ( I mean low scoring games can be anybodys games ).
In low scoring games , bowlers make more runs than Batsmen  ;D . Thus does not matter who has McCulum,Ponting,Hussey,Dada ..
I am putting my money on KKR here. Better batting , playing at home . RPonting is dying to fire here  against Mumbai who would take SJ and RU to click .
