Lifter Kunjarani Devi won the gold medal in the women's 48 kg category to fetch the first medal for India at the 18th Commonwealth Games in Melbourne on Thursday.

Kunjarani created a Games record with an overall lift of 166 kg, which included 72kg in snatch and 94kg in the clean and jerk.

The Indian lifter narrowly pipped Canada's Marilou Dozois-Prevost, who had an  overall lift of 165 kg. Dozois-Prevost was leading after the snatch lift, where she recorded 73 kg, but fell short of Kunjarani's mark in the clean and jerk by 2 kg.

Australia's Erika Yuriko Iris Yamasaki won the bronze with an overall lift of 153 kg
