$850K for 14 games is his price. Each game that he is suspended could cost him a whopping $61K. (I think IPL - like most professional leagues - should add financial penalties.. in addition to foregoing match fees)

Finally, suspensions and bans could have some teeth.. if he did something wrong, and it is proven.. this will HURT him!!

On a somewhat related note - the players who have to leave for national team duties -- are their payments also pro-rated? If so, I suspect that they wouldn't be happy campers to return and wear national colors.

yes..their payments are pro-rated. I had posted lalit modi's statement in the general news thread.  I am not sure if min guarantees are still applicable

$728K ..~Rs 3 Crore. That is a huge loss.

I think only a few players in US professional leagues (Letrell Sprewel of NBA comes to the top of my mind and also there was a ice hockey player who assaulted another player during the game) have been penalized such amount.

India has truly arrived on the global stage ;D ;D

Bhajji loses a fortune for slap

New Delhi, April 28: When Harbhajan Singh slapped Shanthakumaran Sreesanth after Friday’s Indian Premier League match, the feisty off-spinner could hardly imagine that he had just delivered what was arguably the costliest slap in the history of Indian cricket.

Notorious for his on-field skirmishes, Harbhajan’s violent outburst resulted him being banned for the rest of the IPL, besides inviting a fine. Consequentially, Harbhajan, who had been bought in the landmark IPL auction by Mukesh Ambani’s Mumbai franchise for a whopping Rs 3.4 crore, will now pocket merely Rs 48 lakh and he forfeits all his match fees from the third game onwards.

IPL commissioner Lalit Modi today spelled out the arithmetic and said: "A player’s fee is divided over 14 matches and Harbhajan will be paid for only the first two matches." Effectively, the slap that invited the ban leaves a huge hole in Harbhajan’s pocket, costing him around Rs 3 crore.

I thought Mumbai Indians already paid an hefty sum by being 0-4.  May be that is not steep enough.  We may need to wait for few more games perhaps.

IPL governing council decides..the franchises have to adhere to the rules of the league.

(The league offices of NBA/NFL/MLB can issue suspensions/fines to players.. individual teams can do so too .. however in these leagues, the player's unions can appeal the suspensions/fines etc to a pre-appointed arbitrator and arbitrator's rulings are binding)

You forgot the other aussie connexions... Tom Moody, the coach of Kings XI, and whatishisname, the CEO of the same team... they have been known to have been vocal in their demand for a ban... not to mention Ness* Wadia and Preity Zinta...

*What kind of a name is that, btw... he is no relation to the Loch Ness monster I hope? Preity I can understand, is misspelt...
