Rice(Staple) Crisis/Panic in USA --What is your take--
« on: April 25, 2008, 03:00:02 PM »
I got an order from wife to hunt down for rice and get some bags to store as panic seems to set in.  Sam's club and Costco the warehouse retail chains put tabs on the quantity that one can buy.  I have read elsewhere it might get worse before it gets better.

Last weekend I got a 20 lb back in Subzi mandi for $16.99, that looks like a bargain as I heard Costco jacked it upto as high as $36 for a 20lb back yesterday.

I am reading some conflicting reports.  Some say USA has enough stock and it is only a perception that is making people panic.

Stangely the Subzi Mandi guy in Parsippany, NJ is not picking up the phone.  May be I need to drive down and see if I can still get a 20LB bag for $16.99, for the Sona Masoori variety.

What are you all thinking here in U.S.A.  Let me know.

Sams and Costco are selling only four 20lb rice bags per purchase. But that is only for non-business buyers. If you are a business like a restaurant, they don't put any limits. They say they are doing so because they have noticed that people have started buying rice in huge quantities and started hoarding it. They want to discourage that. Also, they are doing this for long grain rice only.

Rationing will slowly come to US too.  :-\

It's an interesting issue. We bought an extra 10 pound bag, but if everyone tries to buy extra at once, price will go up even more. In general, "the time to buy is when everyone is selling, time to sell is when everybody is buying". So logically the time to stock up on rice was 2 years ago, not now. So don't buy extra, unless rice is so important to you that you need to buy more, even at a high price, just for peace of mind.

this is like the reverse development ...slowly USA heading India way.....
On a related note, there was this news which suggests more and more people are preferring places like farmers markets or farmlands to pick up their veggies compared to a big grocery retailer....this is a cheaper option , farmers market has doubled in numbers in last 2 years in USA ....

and in India we are trying our best to bring folks like Reliance to consolidate farm market and get rid of unorganized  farm market  ;D

An excellent thought which I believe in as well, but then when "Ghar wali" wants to get it, my thoughts out of the window.  Will have to stock up on some for that peace of mind.

People should do just like me:

1. Buy a 20 pound bag that will last a month.

2. Come end May, leave for India for a two month long trip.

My better half had me carry 6, 20 lbs bags despite me assuring all we be fine eventually.  What to do????  You got to do it, that is all there is to it.

Good that I do not depend on rice.  Is the scarcity for rice imported from India?

Sir, Sometimes you got to do what you got to do, however crazy it might appear.  I leave it at that.

Way to go .... a cricket DG full of men (for the most part) discussing first toor dal and now rice ka price.

Since this is our inspiration, In our cricket match yesterday, while batting (great batting at that ... report coming soon), I too tried to discuss the price of rice with the other batsman between overs (thinking I am sure the IPL cricketers too discuss the same between overs). That (andhraite) did not appreciate the discussion :)

BTW, the price of wheat will go even higher due to the so-called bio fuels. So, do not count on replacing wheat (pasta or otherwise) with rice.
