IPL 2008 : Team Captains Ranking.
« on: April 24, 2008, 09:56:56 PM »
I think captaincy is becoming a critical part of this tournament. Not surprising..since in professional leagues like NFL, NBA .. there is so much premium placed on coaches - the strategists and tacticians of the game plan. IMO, in cricket the closest equivalent to a NFL or MLB coach is the on-field captain.

With 1/6th of the tournament completed, I would rank the captains as follows :
1. Warne (best utilization of resources available, best motivator so far)
2. Dhoni (Has no bowling but is still winning)
3. Ganguly (Has an OK team, utilized local talent well, aided in one match by individual brilliance and in another by environment)
4. Sehwag (Has an awesome team that is gelling)
5. Dravid (bad 1st game but showing signs of learning)
6. Bhajji (clueless)
7. Yuvi (uninspiring)
8. VVS (clueless, uninspiring and has no personal performance to back)

Frankly, 2/3/4 are close and then there is a huge gap between 4 and 5.

Now we know why Chappel( Ian that is!) keeps on harping about Warne as the best captain never to have captained Australia!

And it was ridiculous to have kept him off captaincy because of his extra curricular activities... not that Ponting is a great example to the Australians  :P

Warne has been good but I would never have given Munaf his 4th over. :-\
