This is the combination that Hyderabad needs to go in tomorrow

1)Gilchrist
2)RaviTeja
3)Laxman(if there is a brisk start of 30 or 40 then he can promote Symonds)
4) Symonds
5) Rohit Sharma
6) Shahid Afridi
7) Arjun Yadav
8. Vaas
9) KalyanaKrishna
10) RP Singh
11) Ojha

The above order gives the team a very good balance and 2 excellent fielders Symonds and Teja with Rohit and Yadav being very good.

I think this is the best combination for tomorrow and I would like to see that lineup.  Basically no Bangar and Venu against the Rajasthan Royals.

Match facts

Thursday, April 24, 2008
Start time 20:00 (local), 1430 (GMT)

The Big Picture

They have one of the strongest batting line-ups in the tournament but the Deccan Chargers are still to win a game. Sitting at the bottom of the points table, despite being one of the biggest spenders at the auction, they are running out of time to find their winning combination. Their two defeats have been big and convincing - by five wickets against the Kolkata Knight Riders and by nine wickets against the Delhi Daredevils. Rajasthan, meanwhile, were frugal at the auction but they managed to work out their game after an initial nine-wicket loss to Delhi. They come in to this game having beaten the Kings XI Punjab by six wickets in Jaipur and will now be looking to push their way up the table.

For most viewers it will be the first time they get to see Adam Gilchrist face Shane Warne in front of the stumps. Gilchrist's Twenty20 average is just 22.11 from 28 games and he will be eager to improve on that. But will he be able to read Warne's googly and flipper?

Watch out for ...

Andrew Symonds and Gilchrist - two of international cricket's most explosive batsmen - finally catching fire after an anti-climactic start. For Australia Symonds has shown, apart from his run-scoring abilities, he can take wickets at crucial intervals with his medium-pace and off spin and it will be interesting to see if he can stop the in-form Shane Watson.

Rohit Sharma saved some face for Deccan in their previous game with a 36-ball 66. If he gets going and finds support from Symonds or Shahid Afridi, Deccan can hope to set or chase down a target with relative ease. Deccan's young left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha could be a handy bowling change if things get out of control; he picked up 2 for 18 against Kolkata, including the wicket of Sourav Ganguly, who was beaten by flight.

Team news

Hyderabad's aggressive opener Ravi Teja, their leading run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy last season, may replace Venugopal Rao in the Deccan side. Afridi could be promoted to No. 3 for quick runs if Deccan bat first.

Deccan Chargers: (probable) Adam Gilchrist (wk), Ravi Teja, Shahid Afridi, VVS Laxman (capt), Andrew Symonds, Rohit Sharma, Sanjay Bangar, Arjun Yadav, Chaminda Vaas, RP Singh, Pragyan Ojha.

Graeme Smith has joined the Rajasthan squad after domestic duties and he could be played over Darren Lehmann, who's totalled 18 from two games. They have also fiddled with their opening combination in both matches but, after Mohammad Kaif scored only five against Punjab, Yusuf Pathan could return as opener alongside Kamran Akmal.

Rajasthan (probable) Yusuf Pathan, Kamran Akmal (wk), Mohammad Kaif, Shane Watson, Graeme Smith, Ravindra Jadeja, Pankaj Singh, Dinesh Salunkhe, Shane Warne (capt), Siddharth Trivedi, Munaf Patel.

Stats and trivia

Rohit averages 46 from 16 Twenty20 games, with a highest of 101 not out and a strike-rate of 147.85.

Pathan has struck 15 fours and five sixes in the 59 deliveries he has faced in Twenty20 games, which means a boundary every three balls.

Quotes

"His Telugu is good, especially for someone who has stayed all his life in Mumbai."
Venugopal Rao on how Rohit Sharma has adjusted to Hyderabad

"Don't say that my team is weak and please don't write us off. This team may lack some experience but all of them are enthusiastic young cricketers and learning a lot from the senior players in the team."
Warne is optimistic about Rajasthan's chances in the IPL.

Its a gross mistake to underestimate Warne's team

The two Shane’s have done it for the Rajasthan Royals. They have dragged their team’s fortunes back from the edge by leading the way in the victory over Kings XI Punjab on their home ground in the Pink City on Monday.

After they had been outclassed by the Delhi Daredevils and routed by nine wickets at the Kotla on Sunday, there were concerns that the Royals would be one of the also-rans of the inaugural event. After all, they had only one genuine superstar in Shane Warne.

But Monday’s display has altered all such perceptions and they have stormed back to contention. Thursday sees them face the Deccan Chargers at Hyderabad and this too promises to be a fascinating contest.

It is obvious that their home ground of the Sawai Man Singh stadium suits Warne and his looping leggies. After nearly a week of matches, he remains along with Kolkata’s Murali Kartik the only bowler to capture three wickets in an innings.

Even in the opening loss to Delhi it was young left-hander Ravindra Jadeja who top-scored with 29 at better than a run a ball.

On Monday he was unbeaten on a fluent 36 as his stand of 69 for the unbroken fifth wicket took the side home with nearly two overs to spare.

Though it was Watson who claimed the Man of the Match award for his electrifying 76 not out, the locals would have been delighted that one of their own lads has been showing such promise.

The teenager was a success in the Under-19 World Cup and at Jaipur on Monday he displayed a fine array of strokes in dealing with a pretty formidable bowling line-up consisting of Brett Lee, Sreesanth and Irfan Pathan.

On one side was the teenage talent, on the other the veteran master tossing up his leg breaks and googlies with all the guile and mastery of old.

It has been 16 months since Warne retired from international cricket. But the way he foxed James Hopes, Kumar Sangakkara and Yuvraj Singh, it was as if he had never taken a break at all.

Warne was the sentimental favourite for the Man of the Match award. But it was the ‘other Shane’—another blond cricketer from Australia!—who took it home for his match-winning knock to hand the Kings their second successive defeat.

Warne made a point of thanking the support staff for their contribution, including psychologist Jeremy Snape. The off spinner has represented England in ODIs, but these days is putting his sports psychology degree to obvious good use.

Warne himself has put in the hard miles and is taking the IPL very seriously. “Over the past week, I’ve spent every spare minute in the nets. I’ve done lots and lots of bowling.”

It certainly showed. When he came on to bowl, Punjab were well placed at 54 for one from just six overs.

When he took himself off after a three-over spell, the score-board read 84 for 4 after 11 overs and it took just three balls for him to lure Sangakkara, one of the world’s leading batsmen into giving a return catch. Hopes and Yuvraj were to soon follow.

The Chargers have proved to be the biggest disappointment so far. On Sunday they were trapped on a diabolical track at the Eden Gardens. But there was no excuse at being crushed by nine wickets by the Daredevils on their own ground on Tuesday.

Further, the Royals will be strengthened by the arrival of South African skipper Graeme Smith and Pakistan’s Younis Khan.

The contest within the contest? Look out for Warne v VVS Laxman. Should be a treat.

Chargers ready to rebound

Hyderabad, April 23: Hope lies eternal in the breast of man. Notwithstanding the bad start to their campaign, Deccan Chargers are confident of turning the tide when they take on a resurgent Rajasthan Royals at the Rajiv *hi International Stadium here on Thursday.  After being ambushed by Kolkata Knight Riders on an underprepared pitch at the Eden, Deccan Chargers were looking to put their campaign on track against Delhi Daredevils on Tuesday. But that didn’t materialise as they were at the receiving end of Virender Sehwag’s blitzkrieg. However, the Chargers are not letting these initial setbacks demoralise them.

A win is what the doctor has prescribed for the Chargers and the hosts are willing to go the extra mile to achieve it. On the other hand, Shane Warne’s men pulled off an upset win over fancied Kings XI Punjab in the previous game and are looking a competent side with the arrival of South African captain Graeme Smith.  The opener lends solidity to the batting and to boost he is a clean striker of the ball. With Kamran Akmal likely to partner him, the duo are a threat to any attack. Chargers’ medium pacers Chaminda Vaas and R.P Singh will have their task cut out on the morrow.

The underdogs have everything going for them as the pressure is now on the hosts, who have to come up with a change in strategy to counter the threat posed by Royals’ attack.  Chargers’ coach Robin Singh on Wednesday hinted at likely changes without elaborating. With South African Herschelle Gibbs available for selection, the hosts are in for some more embarrassment of riches. But whether he will be in the playing XI is still not clear.

Royals are on a song and skipper Warne, as he proved in the previous game, showed that he is still a competitive bowler. His three for 19 in four overs bottled up Punjab. The Chargers will need to ensure that the wily leg spinner isn’t given any room to spin his magic. The worrying factor for skipper VVS Laxman has been the inability of his top order to get going. They struggled in both matches to get off to a flying start. Barring Rohit Sharma’s brave effort in the last game, none of the other batsmen have come good.

That, however, is what is upmost on Warne’s mind. The Australian is wary of the Chargers rebounding against his team.  The dangerous trio of Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds and Shahid Afridi are itching for some action and Warne knows that if any one of them gets going his side is in trouble. The key man for Royals will be the Australian all-rounder Shane Watson. The 26-year-old showed his hitting prowess with a scintillating 76 off 49 balls. With the wicket likely to play true, the Australian would fancy his chances for another big knock.

Gilly waits for spark

Hyderabad, April 23: Deccan Chargers are looking for that one spark that will ignite the competition.
That could come in Thursday’s match against the Rajasthan Royals at the Rajiv *hi International Stadium and bring the Chargers roaring back into the competition. Vice-captain Adam Gilchrist reassured the Chargers fans saying, “I don’t think we need to panic. It’s a long tournament and we are very determined to try and turn things around.”

“It would take one little thing to ignite us. One performance is going to capture everyone and we’re all going to rise up from that. There are so many talented cricketers no doubt and the challenge for us is to work out who that’s going to be,” Gilly told this newspaper on Wednesday. Rajasthan Royals captain Shane Warne sounded a bit worried. “The Chargers losing both their matches is bad for us. With dangerous players in their side, they could rebound,” he said on match eve. “They are a balanced side which has not yet clicked,” the former leg-spinner added.

Gilchrist said spectator support at the Chargers’ first home game on Tuesday had spurred him. “It was great to have the home crowd and that’s something that is driving me on. I just wish I could’ve stayed out there longer,” he said. “One of the driving factors is to try and perform for this home crowd because they were there, enthusiastic and desperate for us to do well,” Gilchrist said. “Believe me, we are trying our best to do well for you.”

Chargers coach Robin Singh spoke about the things that would charge up the Chargers. “There could be a couple of changes,” he said, hinting at a shift in batting positions. Robin said, “It is hard for the new batsmen to adjust when wickets fall regularly. It is difficult to set a challenging total once you slip to 5 for 50 odd early in the innings.” Robin attributed captain V.V.S. Laxman’s bad patch to batting style. “Each player has a set style and it is difficult to change overnight,” he said. ;D ;D

However, the coach was sure the team would bounce back into the competition. “We had a bad day on Tuesday,” he said of the loss to Delhi Daredevils.

The chargers may get their much needed win today. Laxman should open like RD, or drop himself down the order.

While Smith makes RRoyals strong on paper,  IMO performing in first match is asking too much from him.
My money is still on RRoyals .
I heard Robin singh commenting that few things would change in this match . Let us watch what changes.

One more chance for Chargers to score 300. They get to bat first at homeground .
Yadav preferred over Venu  ???

AC Gilchrist, VVS Laxman, A Symonds, RG Sharma, Shahid Afridi, SB Bangar, AS Yadav, WPUJC Vaas, RP Singh, PP Ojha, D Kalyankrishna

 Rajasthan Royals team
GC Smith, Kamran Akmal, M Kaif, YK Pathan, SR Watson, RA Jadeja, Pankaj Singh, D Salunkhe, SK Warne, SK Trivedi, MM Patel

Toss: Shane Warne has won the toss and Rajasthan will bowl first. The reason, not surprising, the dew. Yeah, yesterday in Chennai it felt like they were playing with a bar of soap. It may not be as bad today but Warne's not taking too many chances. Hyderabad haven't had the best of luck batting first but they will have to keep history aside and reverse that trend.
