Farokh Engineer endorses Laxman's views on shocking Eden track

MATCH referee Farokh Engineer had no qualms in agreeing with Deccan Chargers' skipper VVS Laxman that the Eden Gardens wicket on which his side lost their DLF Indian Premier League opener was a poor one. "I agree with Laxman. It was not a good track," Engineer told MiD DAY from his hotel room in Kolkata last night.
"It was not a good pitch for any form of the game. It was a shocking wicket. In the Twenty20 format you expect high scores. Though the match became exciting in the end, it was tough for the batsmen to go for shots," Laxman told reporters after the five-wicket loss to Kolkata Knight Riders.
"Twenty20 cricket is all about strokes and you need tracks which will help strokeplay," Engineer said. "However, it was the same pitch for both teams and a disadvantage to both. Also, no one got seriously injured. But yes, we don't want to see a pitch like this is in the remainder of the tournament"
Yesterday's match was disrupted for a while when the floodlights went off due to a power snag. "We checked the Duckworth Lewis system and it was even stevens but it would have probably end up in a bowl-out," said Engineer.
Laxman felt the interruption affected his team's rhythm.
"The interruption definitely affected us. The momentum was towards us. And the bowlers were in great rhythm. But having said that, I must say that the bowlers were in great rhythm when play resumed," the Hyderabadi said.
His team could not stop Kolkata Knight Riders, who were helped immensely by David Hussey's 38. On Saturday, his brother Michael slammed a 54-ball 116 for Chennai Super Kings against Punjab Kings in Mohali.
"I like fast, bouncy wickets better. I thought there will be more bounce, more pace in the wicket," David said.
Hussey admitted the power-cut was good for his side. "It was a good break for us. We got to collect our thoughts, have a drink and re-adjust our game plans and that probably worked in our favour."
