IPL cash starts flowing in

Aminah Sheikh / Mumbai April 18, 2008

With the DLF Indian Premier League (IPL) ready to kick off on Friday, serious cash flows have started for the high profile team owners.

Vijay Mallya, whose team Royal Challengers will take on Shah Rukh Khan's Kolkata Knight Riders in the inaugural match in Bangalore, has already got busy counting the cash.

He has sold all the 41,000-plus tickets for the match and, according to industry estimates, has made over Rs 2 crore in the bargain.

Insiders say that Mallya will be able to rake in over Rs 12-14 crore from ticket sales of the seven matches his team plays in Bangalore. He has also roped in two co- sponsors for his team, Reebok and Louis Phillipie, for Rs 12-14 crore.

All told, the eight teams are expected to make over Rs 250 crore on ticket sales and co-sponsor deals. This is much higher than what the team owners had initially thought they would make. Shah Rukh’s team, for instance, has roped in four sponsors — T-series (for music), Tag Heuer, Belmonte and HDIL.

Still, each could end up with a loss of Rs 25 crore on an average. Profits, they all are hopeful, will come from the next season.

Says Vijay Rekhi, president, UB Group:" We have sold out for the first match and the remaining six home matches are also receiving a good response. Of course, it is a profitable business and we should break even next year.”

To give the spectators their money’s worth, Rekhi said, there will be stilt performers, cheer leaders and a live performance by the musical trio of Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy at the match.

Half the tickets for the second match on April 19 between Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Superkings at Mohali (capacity: 30,000) have been sold.

The third match, also on April 19, between Delhi Daredevils and Rajasthan Royals too is seeing brisk sales. Tickets for the next two matches on April 20 are also almost sold-out.

(IF THIS IS THE CASE, WE MIGHT SEE A 100,000 AT EDEN ...WOWWWWW!!)

Earlier it was reported that SRK was dissapointed by the sales of tickets on the first day, because he had sold only about 100 tickets on day1... things might really have picked up after todays match,,

Craziest (or should I say most passionate) fans used to be the soccer fans of Kolkata  in the 70's.  Cricket fans have been relatively less crazy as it is considered gentlemen's game after all.

Let the home party begin
- Pleasing start but Riders face raging Chargers today
 Mind Games

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John Buchanan

There was definitely an edge of excitement and uncertainty as we went into the opening of the first DLF IPL tournament. Administrators, sponsors, event managers, players, supporters and officials, each in their own way, wanted the games to begin, yet had some trepidation about what the show might deliver.

Andrew Symonds of the Deccan Chargers practises at the Eden on the eve of the match with Kolkata Knight Riders. On Saturday, MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings beat Yuvraj Singh’s Kings XI Punjab in Mohali by 33 runs. Virender Sehwag’s Delhi Daredevils beat Shane Warne’s Rajasthan Royals in New Delhi by 9 wickets. Picture by Gautam Bose
But all that was quickly dispelled as the opening ceremony, followed by some entertaining cricket, launched the IPL into history as well as into memory. From where I was sitting, it all seemed to go like clockwork to the point where the umpires and players were ready to commence play some three minutes early — this was almost an anti-climax to the extravaganza that had preceded it.

But that was only for a fleeting moment, because the immense talents of Brendon McCullum saw to it that fans around the world were treated to the best Twenty20 innings ever played. In fact, his 158 not out would rank him very highly both in ODI and Test forms of the game, not to mention that he played only 73 of the 123 balls bowled!

After Praveen Kumar had begun the game with a sedate first over, Zaheer Khan ran into the maelstrom called McCullum, with three fours and a leading-edge six flying from the bat in the second over.

Our team-talk had suggested that if the wicket was doing a bit, we would be prepared to minimise the damage in the first five overs so that we could build from there. I must say I wasn’t looking at Brendon at this point of the meeting, but obviously he had not heard as, in the fourth over, he swatted another boundary and a couple more sixes. By the conclusion of the fifth over, Brendon was rampant and Dravid had already been forced into two bowling changes.

Losing Sourav Ganguly in the sixth over slowed the onslaught somewhat as overs six through nine yielded only 17 runs. Ricky Ponting was feeding the strike to McCullum as well as giving him some guidance on how to approach his game at this point. This pair had put together another 50-odd before Ponting departed and David Hussey continued where the Australian captain had left off — rotating the strike to allow the diminutive Kiwi full access to the bowlers.

In a brief talk before the Knight Riders raced onto the field, Sourav had discussed the best length to bowl and how to keep the correct mindset for the innings. Young Ashok Dinda was given the first over — a huge vote of confidence from Ganguly — and the young man did not disappoint. He picked up a wicket in his second over after Ishant had delivered the perfect full leg-stump ball to Rahul Dravid, first ball at the other end.

It was a pleasing start for the Knight Riders. The younger members did well with Dinda impressing first up, Wriddhiman Saha doing a very good job behind the stumps to allow Brendon some breathing space, Laxmi Ratan Shukla responding well after seeing his first ball disappear, Ishant being a real handful with his pace and bounce, Hafeez doing an excellent finishing job for us with the bat, and the boys Iqbal Abdullah and Debabrata Das doing a lot of running to keep their team-mates supplied with every request. Also pleasing were the performances of our fielders who set out to demonstrate a standard that we want to maintain throughout the tournament.

Shah Rukh Khan sang the team song in the rooms afterwards. He has very quickly endeared himself to the team.

Yet we know that one game, one win, will not make a season. The Deccan Chargers will be far more aggressive at the top of their batting order with Adam Gilchrist, Herschelle Gibbs, Andrew Symonds and V.V.S. Laxman leading the charge. Still, nice to have the first game behind us, and we look forward, hopefully, to bringing the Kolkata Knight Rider fans to their feet with our first home game.

As per SG , Eden pitch will spin and he believes Hyderabad team doesnt have good spinner so he is ahead !

Also SRK has instructed Red Chillies managers to try every possible thing to stop Mccullum from leaving after 4 matches including added compensation  ;D

Did not use..was not necessary...why waste a good bowler on some insipid batting... at 45 for 7... the Dindas and Shuklas were enough to wrap it all

titans?

You determine "titan-ship" by # of matches a team has played ?

dude you are twisting the issue.

how can you call anyone a titan, a favorite, whatever, in this tournament? at least not yet.
you dont know how they play. theyve never played together as teams. even individual performances in T20 - we have hardly any previous baseline to judge from.
one team has one win from one match. the other is yet to play. there are so many equations  and so many games to be played.
titans, champs, favorites...will emerge with time.

all any of us can have at this point is a hunch.

it may look like a simple formula right now...but things will get interesting as this tournament plays itself out. you gotta be kidding me if you think thats it for the royals and the challengers, as if theyre not going to mount a challenge.

so titans...based on one match, no way.

KKR seems the best dressed of them all ...atleast so far... Kings XI looked pretty decent too ...

Delhi Daredevils... could not make out if there were 13 players or 13 umpires till they decided to let the umpires change into cool t-shirts

one team has one win from one match. the other is yet to play. there are so many equations  and so many games to be played.
titans, champs, favorites...will emerge with time.

all any of us can have at this point is a hunch.

it may look like a simple formula right now...but things will get interesting as this tournament plays itself out. you gotta be kidding me if you think thats it for the royals and the challengers, as if theyre not going to mount a challenge.

so titans...based on one match, no way.

From the look of the teams and bench strength available, BRC and RR do not seem to have the firepower...
atleast for BRC, one can hope that Steyn, Misbah and Cpaul can make a diffference..but all of them will not play, given the 4 foreign player limit...

titans?
one's played one match, the other's not played yet.
You determine "titan-ship" by # of matches a team has played ?

dude you are twisting the issue.

Look... till a few games are played the initial games will be hyped (which is what I am doing ;D ;D ) based on what is on paper. To me on paper, these are the strongest teams. Every other team has one weakness or other.. these two teams have a good balance.

Let's see whether performance meets expectations..

KKR seems the best dressed of them all ...atleast so far... Kings XI looked pretty decent too ...

Delhi Daredevils... could not make out if there were 13 players or 13 umpires till they decided to let the umpires change into cool t-shirts
That was funny.. the umpires where dressed similar to the Delhi team!!

Willow listed KKR vs DC game as the late evening one.. whereas the CI schedule lists it as the earlier one. Which is it?
