15 Apr, 2008 08:28 pm IST,AFP

BARCELONA, April 15: Force India's Giancarlo Fisichella recorded the best time during private practice on Tuesday morning at the Montmelo circuit, which will host the fourth Grand Prix of the season on April 27.

The Italian managed 1min 19.721 seconds on this track near Barcelona, about half a second faster than second-placed Felipe Massa of Ferrari, who won the last Formula One Grand Prix in Bahrain on April 6.

Third was the McLaren of Lewis Hamilton, ahead of two-time world champion Fernando Alonso in a Renault, a good result for the French team which has been trying to improve its R28 following a disappointing start of the season.

Tuesday's times: 1. Giancarlo Fisichella (ITA/Force India) 1.19.721 (45 laps), 2. Felipe Massa (BRA/Ferrari) 1.20.326 (60), 3. Lewis Hamilton (ENG/McLaren) 1.20.452 (53), 4. Fernando Alonso (ESP/Renault) 1.20.632 (72), 5. Nico Rosberg (GER/Williams-Toyota) 1.20.800 (48), 6. Nick Heidfeld (GER/BMW-Sauber) 1.21.391 (55), 7. Fisichella 2nd fastest in Barcelona test
16 Apr, 2008 11:28 am IST,PTI

BARCELONA, April 16: Giancarlo Fisichella outshone the likes of Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton to conjure up yet another impressive timing that placed him second fastest in the second day's testing at the Circuit de Catalunya here.

Behind the wheels of the VJM01, Fisichella completed 79 laps and his best of 1min 19.721s remained the benchmark for major part of the day in the nine-man field before Honda's Rubens Barrichello (1 min 18.928s) raised the bar.

Next on the list was Ferrari's Bahrain Grand Prix winner Massa, followed by Red Bull's David Coulthard, McLaren's Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso of Renault, Nico Rosberg of Williams, Toyota's Timo Glock and BMW-Sauber's Nick Heidfeld.

Though Fisichella posted his best time on 2009 'slick' Bridgestone tyre option, he proved quick on the grooved rubber too and managed a more representative time of 1m 20.7s to demonstrate the Silverstone-based outfit's rapid progress.

This was a marked improvement from the team's previous fastest lap round in Barcelona this year -- a 1 min 22.233, was set by Giancarlo in February. The same circuit will host the fourth Grand Prix of the season on April 27 and the strong show here would boost the Vijay Mallya-owned team's morale.

Quite at home behind the wheel of the VJM01, Fisichella said, "The car went much better this time out than the last time we tested in Barcelona, which you can see in the considerable improvement in our lap times. This is largely due to the new parts we have introduced since the start of the season and the last time we were here.

"I tested the new 2009 slick tyres here today -- which was the reason for my fastest lap -- but we were also much quicker on 2008 grooved rubber too. The best lap we did here in February was a 1min 22.3 and now we are at 1min 20.7, we're really moving forward," said the Italian.

Chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne too had little to complain about.

"A positive day of testing with Giancarlo today. Apart from a few minor mechanical issues we had no real problems and were able to complete our whole test programme today," he summed up the day.

"In the morning we ran, as per yesterday, in the 2008 aero configuration to look at set-up work for next weekend's Spanish Grand Prix. Giancarlo also ran a set of 2009 tyres and put in a very good lap that put us at the top of the times for most of the day.

"In the afternoon we then switched to the 2009 configuration and tried out the different options of tyres available to us next year and got a lot of useful information. Most positive from the day however is that with full 2008 settings and tyres, Giancarlo put in strong times that bettered our previous fastest times round here by more than two seconds. We're obviously very pleased with this progress going into next week's race," he said.

Adrian Sutil will take over testing duties for the third and final day of testing.

Day two timings:

1. Rubens Barrichello, Honda-Honda, 1min 18.928sec (79 laps)
2. Giancarlo Fisichella, Force India-Ferrari, 1min 19.721sec (79 laps)
3. Felipe Massa, Ferrari-Ferrari, 1min 20.283secs (113 laps)
4. David Coulthard, Red Bull-Renault, 1min 20.392s (89 laps)
5. Lewis Hamilton, McLaren-Mercedes, 1min 20.452secs (97 laps)
6. Fernando Alonso, Renault-Renault, 1min 20.616s (119 laps)
7. Nico Rosberg, Williams-Toyota, 1min 20.800secs (103 laps)
8. Timo Glock, Toyota-Toyota, 1min 20.870secs (112 laps)
9. Nick Heidfeld, BMW-Sauber, 1min 20.981secs (98 laps)
