Buchanan son to join support staff
A STAFF REPORTER

Calcutta: Coach John Buchanan’s son will be part of the Kolkata Knight Riders’s support staff in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Michael Buchanan, the eldest son of the former Australia coach, will be associated with the Shah Rukh Khan-owned side as a trainer.

New South Wales coach Matthew Mott will be Buchanan’s assistant.

Michael, a Queensland batsman who also played Rugby Union at under-19 state level, will be involved with Sourav Ganguly & Co. in the capacity of a strength trainer.

Mott, a former Queensland and Victoria batsman, was elevated to the New South Wales hot seat once Trevor Bayliss was appointed Sri Lanka’s coach.

“John wants his son and Mott to be part of his team. They will come here before the camp starts on Saturday,” said a Kolkata Knight Riders official on Monday.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting, David Hussey and New Zealand wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum will join the camp at the Eden from Day I. West Indies captain Chris Gayle, however, will arrive only on the eve of the Knight Riders’s IPL opener, against Rahul Dravid’s side in Bangalore on April 18.

“The West Indies will play the final ODI of a three-match series against Sri Lanka on April 15. So, the possibility of Gayle’s participation in the camp is ruled out,” he said.

Meanwhile, online booking of IPL tickets at the Eden entered a second day but the response was lukewarm. Both the Cricket Association of Bengal and Shah Rukh’s company, Red Chillies Entertainment Private Ltd, did not reveal the number of tickets already booked.

IPL, a chance for India's young to shine: Daredevils coach

Press Trust Of India
New Delhi, April 08, 2008

The Indian Premier League is not merely a cash bonanza but also an opportunity for India's young to rub shoulders with some of cricket's biggest icons and earn their national stripes, feels Delhi Daredevils' Australian coach Greg Shipperd.
Shipperd, who guided Australian domestic side Victoria to a hat-trick of Twenty20 titles before joining the IPL, said the Indian youngsters can impress their national selectors by doing well in the IPL.

"It's a big stage. The spotlight would be firmly on them and it gives them a great chance of showing their skills," Shipperd told reporters after the team's practice session on Tuesday.

The Daredevils have youngsters like Shikhar Dhawan, Rajat Bhatia and Mayank Tehlan in their fold and Shipperd said these rookies would add excitement to the series.

Bhatia echoed his coach's views and said he was excited about playing along side greats like Glenn McGrath besides homegrown heroes like skipper Virender Sehwag.

"We will only learn from them and it is a wonderful opportunity for us. In fact it would help the set-up of our domestic cricket," he said.

I don't see the issue in Buchanan hiring his son - they are likely to be on hte same page and I highly doubt that Michael Buchanan is underqualified. Furthermore, I think it is amazing that, if only for a few weeks, the Indian domestic players get an experience of some of the finest international coaches (and their children:D).

On another note, does anyone think that TA Sekhar, coach of the Delhi Daredevils - will try to change Glenn Mcgrath's action :P
