Shock treatment for Pathan

CHENNAI, March 25: Irfan Pathan is unlikely to figure in the line-up for the opening Test against South Africa on Wednesday but that is unlikely to shock him as much as the treatment meted out to him in full public glare by a senior Tamil Nadu Cricket Association official.

Poor Pathan was merely obliging his skipper Anil Kumble's request to sign a few autographs for his Chennai-based cousin, who had come to the ground along with his family and friends, when Natarajan, the joint secretary of the TNCA, let go a broadside which had the normally blushing all-rounder flustered.

Initially upset at the police for not regulating the fans, not realizing that M R Karthik, was here to see his cousin Kumble, the official turned on Pathan when the latter pointed out that he was the one who had called the fans over and that they were not disturbing him in any way.

Determined to have his say, Natarajan first ensured that the young boys and girls who were part of the group retreated in fright and then literally screamed at Pathan even as he insisted he wasn't really talking to him (Pathan). "Why are you screaming at me thus, why are you talking to me like this," pleaded a shocked Pathan, only for Natarajan to scream further.

"Go away from here, don't disrupt our work," he told the well-mannered young man from Baroda.

The same group, who had earlier been obliged by Harbhajan Singh and Wasim Jaffer, had actually been escorted into the ground by the Indian team's travel assistant Russell Radhakrishnan as Kumble was busy at practice. They couldn't really believe what they were seeing and hearing.

In his defence Natarajan, in a way, was doing his job, keeping the players' security in mind, but this certainly was no way to treat an international cricketer.

The official's parting shot was no less virulent. "Let's see if you can get runs," he shouted before walking away, leaving Pathan in further shock.

it is obvious that quite a few of these good for nothing officials lack class

But nothing will happen to them.

Anyway, I hope the team stands up for him and lodges a protest.

This Natarajan chappie is  just one in the long line of illustrious Cricket administrators like Lele, S. K. Nair, Niranjan Shah and other worthies.

"Why are you screaming at me thus?" Forget Pathan, does anyone really speak like that?
