NEW DELHI March 17:  June 25 is a red-letter day in Indian cricket. Now it threatens to leave BCCI red-faced. As the silver jubilee celebrations of India’s 1983 Prudential World Cup win near, what is expected to be a joyous occasion has put BCCI in an awkward position. It will have to honour four key squad members who have since joined the rebel Indian Cricket League in various capacities.

To complicate things, another celebrated member of that team, Sunil Gavaskar, has booked the Long Room at Lord’s, the venue of the historic victory, for a private celebration with all other squad members on June 25. Some of his former teammates who have received invitations told TOI that it would be a "private party" with "no BCCI involvement".

In 1988, Gavaskar had refused life membership of MCC, which is based at Lord’s. But his once-stormy relationship with the self-styled guardians of the game is expected to have no bearing on this particular "homecoming".

The captain of the 1983 squad, Kapil Dev, who is now the ICL executive board head, and three of his legendary Devils who played prominent roles in that campaign - Madan Lal (now coach of Delhi Giants in the ICL 20s Grand Championships), Balwinder Singh Sandhu (now coach of Chandigarh Lions) and Sandeep Patil (now coach of Mumbai Champs) have all invited severe sanctions from BCCI after joining ICL.

Effectively, BCCI has severed all ties with these heroes, sacking Kapil from his post as chairman of the National Cricket Academy and even going to the extent of suspending pensions of all these former players. Can the board now swallow its pride for this important moment?

BCCI will have a celebration for sure but without its heros...They will turn it into another Bollywood meets cricket tamashaa.

This is the single most important moment in Indian cricket history perhaps, and we all know how great and special that day was.  June 25th, 1983 is still like yesterday to me for ever etched in memory.

The 25th anniversary on the 25th June should be celebrated and each member of that team honoured regardless of the affiliations.  Hope better sense prevails.
