Time to deliver
In a do-or-die battle against Lanka, India needs it’s grizzled warriors to deliver after a series of disappointments

Ehtesham Hasan
The factors were heavily loaded against India on the eve of their crucial clash against Sri Lanka at the Bellerive Oval.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side have had no time to rest or recover following their game against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday night which went down to the wire. India - thanks to Gautam Gambhir’s gritty hundred and Robin Uthappa’s late charge - fell short by 18 runs while chasing 317 for victory.

The gruelling schedule of this triangular series saw them landing in the Tasmanian capital last afternoon and heading to their hotel.

Early Arrival

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankans arrived here on Saturday and they have had a couple of good training sessions at the ground, which would have given them more time to acclimatise. For that matter, the conditions aren’t alien to the Lankans, having played a fair bit of cricket here since November.

The Mahela Jayawardena-led side played a Test here and a practice game last month against Tasmania leading into the tri-series. Incidentally, they lost both but the Sri Lanka captain admitted that his side had a slight advantage over their rivals going into this crunch game.

“The Test-match wicket was much harder compared to the practice match that was played on a different one, but we’ve a fair idea of the wicket. It depends on the conditions, which can be overcast here sometimes, so we’ll wait and see,” Jayawardena said yesterday.

Tasmania, although a part of Australia, has conditions very New Zealand-like settings. The overhead conditions are known to change here frequently and that can have a bearing on the game.

India’s coach in charge Lalchand Rajput sounded upbeat of his team’s chances.

“We didn’t go to the ground but some of the players like Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh have played a game here on their last tour and they have a fair idea of the conditions, which they have passed on to the other players,” Rajput said.

On their last tour of Australia in 2003-04, India had overwhelmed minnows Zimbabwe by seven wickets with Virender Sehwag clobbering a 102-ball 90, with five sixes and as many fours.

Team Combination

Sanath Jayasuriya

Interestingly, there’s a question mark hanging over Sehwag’s place in the playing XI for this game.

The former India skipper was picked for the last game on the selectors’ behest who want to decide on his ODI career after this tour.

Till late last night, Dhoni had not called for the team meeting in which usually the XII for the game is announced.

But his formula is simple and he hasn’t shied away from disclosing it. If he goes in with five bowlers, which is a likely scenario here, Munaf Patel will take Sehwag’s place as a specialist bowler.

If Sehwag plays, Dhoni may bench S Sreesanth who doesn’t have a flattering record against Sri Lanka, especially bowling to Sanath Jaysuriya.

Jayawardena, too, is expected to go in with five bowlers as both teams fear playing part-time bowlers against each other.

Batting Woes

The other major aspect to worry is the inconsistent batting. Sachin Tendulkar’s bad patch is affecting the team as they’re unable to get a solid start at the top and that only puts a lot of pressure on the middle order.

The champion batsman has been struggling with a groin injury but despite that he has chosen to play when he could have easily sat out.

Rohit Sharma has looked vulnerable against the moving ball early in his innings but when he has got over that period, he has thrown his wicket away playing extravagant shots. He soon needs to realise value of his good form and Rajput has been trying hard to drill that into his mind.

Dhoni has hinted that he may shuffle the batting order again for this game. It’ll be interesting to see what he comes up with next.

India win toss and elect to field...

SL 22/1 in 6

Terrific ball, there's no huge disgrace in getting out to it. Great start by Ishant who doesn't point the batsman in the direction of the dressing rooms, unlike with Andrew Symonds the other day
3.2 I Sharma to Perera, OUT, straight through him there, Ishant pitches outside off on a great length, Perera came out to drive forward but the ball beats the outside edge and nips back in to clip the off stump
 MDK Perera b I Sharma 8 (13b 1x4 0x6) SR: 61.53

Praveen Kumar to Sangakkara, out Caught by Dhoni!! touch short of good length delivery on the off, shapes away a trifle, Sangakkara advances down the pitch and looks to glide it down in the end, outside edge and a suerb catch by Mahendra Singh Dhoni diving to his left, Sangakkara looks to improvise and that becomes his end, Praveen Kumar picks up his first ODI wicket, what a moment for the young man!!! Sangakkara c Dhoni b Praveen Kumar 33(44) [4s-4]

Ishant strikes in his second spell. Dilshan gone.

Ishant to Dilshan, out Lbw!! this is a beauty of a delivery, good length delivery on the stumps, jabs back into the right hander sharply, Dilshan gets forward and looks to play through the line, misses it completely and rapped on the pads, huge appeal and there is no doubt in umpire Simon Taufel's mind, Ishant strikes in his first over of the second spell, beautiful captaincy by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, he brought back his strike bowler and it has done wonders for him! Dilshan lbw b Ishant 8(12) [4s-1]

Sachin Tendulkar seems to be in some pain at the moment. He is just stretching himself a bit here, taking a blow on the ribs at any pace tends to hurt a lot.

24.1 Muralitharan to Yuvraj, SIX!!, delivery looped up on the middle and leg, hurrying onto him, Yuvraj kneels down slightly and gets under it nicely, smashes it to long on for a biggie, that went sailing into the fence, exquisite timing!!!

as i said before, i find this arbitrary definition of "needing sachin" ludicrous. maybe it would be better understood if he failed in this inning, yuvi came in at 4 and swished away and lost his wicket too and we were 20-3.

oh but of course then sachin sucks at chasing etc etc because WHEN WE NEED HIM HE ISNT THERE.
