India overjoyed at U-19 World Cup win
Press Trust of India
Sunday, March 02, 2008 10:33 PM (New Delhi)

India on Sunday night erupted with joy after its under-19 Cricket team won the World Cup, as President Pratibha Patil, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Cricket Board hailed the achievement as a "great moment" for Indian cricket.

India's victory at Kuala Lumpur for the second time in eight years capped a super Sunday after the senior team beat Australia in the first of the three matches in the Tri-series finals a few hours earlier making it a double whammy for cricket lovers.

Congratulating the victorious team, Patil said the team "showed consistency and its class throughout."

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said it was a "handsome victory" for India.

Homes of several of the triumphant cricketers in Lucknow, Jalandahar and a few other cities broke into spontaneous celebrations and scenes of wild jubilation were witnessed as their relatives did an impromptu jig.

BCCI President Sharad Pawar, who announced a Rs 15 lakh cash award for each of the winning members, said the future of the Indian cricket is bright.

"The team has done a great job, have demonstrated there is a lot of potential in young players and that the future of Indian cricket is bright," he said.

Lalchand Rajput, Indian Cricket manager and a former under-19 coach, said from Australia the seniors are proud of of the achievements of the youngsters. "It is a great moment for Indian cricket," he said.

"There are many great players in the team," he said.

Dilip Vengsarkar, Chairman of the BCCI selection committee, said the "tremendous " victory augured well for the future of the Indian cricket.

Yes and it is sad that no one seems to think about the coach Dave Whatmore who brought world cup to the Sri Lanka seniors and who was rejected by BCCI as a coach for the seniors.

Champagne time for boys, families
TNN / Arghya Ganguly
PrintSaveWrite to EditorMail

NEW DELHI, March 2: It was over, long time back - India had clinched their second U-19 World Cup after eight years - precisely one-and-half hour back but the parents of the Cup-winning players were still waiting to hear from their kids, from Kuala Lumpur. "We don't have time for anything else right now. We are too busy celebrating," a jubilant Shreevats Goswami told TOI from Kuala Lumpur. His knock of 51 in the semis had helped India reach the final.

"We are about to pop open the champagne bottle and there is lots more in store for us," said Goswami, as his voice died down amidst the collective chaos in the Indian dressing room. At about the same time in Kolkata, about 25 relatives in Goswami's family were 'dying to congratulate the young boy over the phone.

Perhaps, their parents wouldn't like to hear that their kids celebrated with champagne but they will cherish this historical night, years from now, as the one when their son shapeshifted into a man and was never the same again. As a player and as a human being.

Turuwar Kohli, who had the distinction of scoring three consecutive 50s running upto the semifinal, too was drunk with success when TOI contacted him but he still managed to squeeze-out some words. "When we got together in the rain-break we told ourselves that we are the champions. We deserve to be champions. We have to go out there and play like champions. It was this belief that helped us to pull it off even though our total was not much. To start with, it was difficult but with the help of the support that we got from everyone in the field we were able to clinch it," said Kohli, as he excused himself to join his mates.

Virat Kohli, the team captain, who was obviously the most busy celebrating. One recalled his words after the semifinal win over NZ: "I thank them for giving us a tough match. The way they fought back in the semifinals and the way we were still able to pull it back from there. We got the taste of real pressure only in the semis. It got us sufficiently warmed up for the final."

The closer the Indians got to the victory, the wilder they became on the field, the more colourful their adjectives got towards their opposition, the more powerful they felt (it showed), the more manly they acted. To them, it just felt like a night that nothing was forbidden anymore. Excuse them parents, they are men now.

Self-belief, team effort key to victory
PTI

KUALA LUMPUR, March 2: Self-belief and team effort were the main factors in India's second Under-19 Cricket World Cup triumph, captain Virat Kohli said on Sunday.

India beat South Africa by 12 runs in a tense final at the Kinrara Oval and a pumped up Kohli could not find words to describe the acievement.

"I don't have any words now. I can't say anything. It is absolutely wonderful to win the cup after a long while," said Kohli who led the wild celebrations, pumping his fist in the air after Siddarth Kaul bowled BG Barnes in the last over.

"We had belief in ourself and we played as a unit and we have won. I can't say any more," Kohli said during the presentation before accepting the winners' trophy from ICC President Ray Mali and joining his team-mates in wild celebrations soaked in pouring rain.

He made a special mention about the South Africans, who gave India a tough fight in the "dream final".

"I think the Soth Africans were marvellous. They played well. It was a dream final and we came out winners," he added.

Watch out for couple of players from this team..

Virat Kohli was very impressive in the challengers..

Goswami has very good technique
--
Also, most of the players were diving around and hitting the stumps directly. Clearly, fielding is being emphasized at  junior levels and kids are valuing it...and developing the right habits from early stages. This bodes well for the future of Indian cricket.

So, they teach them to choke from a young age in SA, I see!

Btw .. Ravi Shastri was on air after yesterday's match saying that the reason Dave Whatmore is coach is because he is also head of the academy and he will have seen all these boys up close over a period of time .. he will report back to ravi on the few guys who look really good and then they will be called over to the academy over the June to Aug/Sept period to further hone their skills.

Nice to see some thought going into this.

goswamis batting is a little bit like parthiv. as for his keeping i wouldnt judge his misses too harshly .. conditions were quite bad after the rain ... the ball was wet and keeping very low and coming on very slow.

plus he took one excellent catch.

I was talking about after they got to the 99 from 98 balls stage with 7 wickets in hand. Also, they had a very narrow gap between runs and balls for quite some time with 6 wickets in hand. They should have got it from there. Just one or two reasonable 9-10 run overs would have done, with the top 2 pacers out of the way and a wet, difficult to grip ball. If India were chasing, I would have definitely expected to win. SA just left it till too late in my view.
