India tame Papua New Guinea in U-19 WC  ;D  ;D

LEADING THE PACK: Tanmay Srivastava stroked a fluent 76-ball 83 studded with three sixes and nine fours.

Mumbai: India handed a 195-run drubbing to minnows Papua New Guinea at the Kinrara Oval in the opening game of the Under-19 World Cup.

Chasing 280, Papua New Guinea collapsed for 85 with only two batsmen getting into double figures. Pradeep Sangwan (2/18), Ajitesh Argal (2/5) and Iqbal Abdulla (3/2) shared the spoils.

Only Alfred Amini, 26, put some resistance in the middle.

Papua New Guinea, still naive with the bat at this level, weren’t really expected to cut it with the Indians. While they came across as an ebullient lot on the field, their batsmen looked seemingly out of place at this level, either failing to come across the line or playing across it.

Earlier, an impressive batting performance by India’s youth brigade helped them rake up a mammoth 280/5.

The foundation was laid by an exactly 100-run opening stand between Punjab’s Turuwar Kohli, 40, and Kolkata’s Shreevats Goswami who compiled a watchful 58.

Taruwar was unsure to start with and was lucky to get away with some streaky shots. Goswami looked more assured of the two and went about collecting the singles, eschewing risks. The effort took a toll on him and he was limping towards the later part of his innings. Goswami perished eventually after slicing John Reva to point.

The Indian innings went into overdrive after skipper Virat Kohli joined the in-form Tanmay Srivastava. The southpaw from Uttar Pradesh (Srivastava) continued his purple patch by reeling off a belligerent 76-ball 83 studded with three sixes and nine fours.

Kohli, 40, buoyed by the spectacle at the other end, too played his part in the tectonic shift.

For Papua New Guinea, left-arm spinner Jason Kila with one for 37 in ten overs and medium-pacer Joel Tom who conceded merely 16 runs off six overs were the pick of the bowlers.

Brief scores:

India 280 (Goswami 48, Srivastava 83, Kohli 40, Kila 1/37)

Papua New Guinea 85 (Amini 26, Sangwan 2/18, Abdulla 3/2)

The only painful thing on following this on Star Cricket is that you will have to put up with Ranjit Fernando!  >:(

Sangwan looks pretty sharp at about 125kph, from clips I have seen but the other Indian medium pacers seem about 110kph. India seem to again, have a very strong batting line up. All look like they will be pushing for places in the Indian team in the next five years or so.

This Indian Team is quite strong atleast on paper. Most of the kids have already played a season or two of Ranji unlike our last U19 teams. And Sangwan is a very exciting prospect, and is definately faster than 125. Any kid who can take 10 odd wickets in Ranji final gotta be decent.

There were no speed guns on the highlights I saw. He definately looked sharp though and 130-135kph is already international standard. Hopefully, he can spend the next few years cutting down the loose balls and adding consistently, he could be a star for the future. He's got a good action.

He is on fire..

45.6     Brooks to V Kohli, FOUR, nothing can stop him now, short and he's creamed that straight down the ground for four more, that was a forehand over the bowler's head. Seventeen off the over and it was one where he should have had a wicket
45.5    Brooks to V Kohli, SIX, and another one, inside out and Virat has given that the kitchen sink, superbly timed, he's in the zone and that's six more
45.4    Brooks to V Kohli, SIX, what a shot! down the ground and Virat has lofted that way over the sight-screen, that was a monster hit

Not a 6... reaches 100 anyway..

From CI..
48.6     Grant to V Kohli, 1 run, drives to mid-off, misfielded and Virat gets his hundred this time. More celebrations, more fist pumps, more smiles. The only cricketer to celebrate his hundred twice? It's probably the innings of the tournament so it's only fitting
48.5    Grant to V Kohli, FOUR, slower one again and Virat has hammered that over midwicket for four, umpire calls six and Virat celebrates his hundred. Then the umpire realises it's only four. What a lovely joke.

Phil: "Little wonder Dav Whatmore the coach calls Virat, son." ;D ;D

Wow...

49.1     Dawes to V Kohli, OUT, lofted to long-off but what a sensational catch by Bravo on the boundary, that was heading over the ropes but Bravo gets his fingertips to it and makes sure he doesn't cross the ropes. What a catch. Super catch to end a super innings

someone on CI comments mentioned that some Indian under 19's were shaving even their chests etc and was questioning whether these kids are indeed under 19.

What are the chances that our under 19's are NOT under 19?

It has to be good. All of them have played in Ranji and have been successful too. And quality in Ranji is always gonna be a bit better than U19. I was disappointed with BCCI for making Sangwan play these stupid ODIs instead of Duleep.

India U-19 skipper Kohli dedicates ton to father as India advance to quarter-final
VIRAT Kohli played a match-saving knock of 90 for his state team Delhi in a Ranji Trophy game against Himachal Pradesh two years ago at Ferozeshah Kotla. That inning was admirable because he came to bat after losing his father Prem the previous night.

The 19-year-old’s knock yesterday of 100 against West Indies was equally special because it saw India clinch a quarter-final place in the U-19 World Cup in Malaysia. Courtesy Virat’s knock, Indian managed 265-5 and managed to restrict West Indies to 215 to clinch a 50-run win.

Important

Virat’s maiden List ‘A’ century meant that West Indies were eliminated from the mega event.

“It was an important innings. I came to bat when we were three wickets down for 116. I knew I had to stay on the wicket and build a partnership. I played my natural game, didn’t think too much and everything fell into place,” the Indian U-19 skipper told MiD DAY from Kuala Lumpur.

So, did he remember his father after the ton? “Yes. He has been my inspiration and he deserves a lot of credit for whatever I am. It was his dream that I score a hundred and today I have fulfilled it.

“I came close to scoring a hundred on many occasions but somehow always stumbled. This time I didn’t think of a century. I went in thinking that I have to score on every opportunity,” said Virat, who hit 10 boundaries and four sixes in his breezy 100 off 74 balls.

Fantastic

Virat said the team is gelling well new coach Dave Whatmore. “He is too good. He knows every player’s strength and weaknesses and tries to work on it. His inputs are really helping us and the team is looking good,” he said.

India take on England in Sunday’s quarter-final.
