First impressions of Indian domestic cricket from watching on Sky Sports.

The pitch was so slow!
VRV Singh could only bowl 130kph but bowled extremely well. Very agressive.
Siddarth Trivedi is a rubbish bowler.
Rajat Bhattia is the worst bowler I have seen in pro cricket.
Rahane is a brilliant, stylish batsman.

I saw the highlights of the 1st day yesterday and have a  somewhat mixed reaction. The coverage was not good so it was difficult to recognise the players. Rahane seemed good but played too many risky shots, flirted outside the off and had any number of edges elluding the fielders.

VRV, to me,  seemed average nothing great but has the potential fo sure...

An interesting quote indeed. I initially believed that the Duleep Trophy was the future of Indian domestic cricket. However, the low crowds and individualistic nature which Paras Mhambry's noted in his blog entry on cricinfo.

Franchises extending into FC and 50 over cricket will most certainly threaten international cricket and perhaps that the BCCI will be weary that. The overshadowing of a FC Final with a T20 draft clearly may be a vision of things to come. With likely more of a crowd following the auction than watching the Duleep Trophy final.

Perhaps India could alter the zonal system to send out touring teams to several different countries around the world and playing touring sides too (much like the England Lions) as well as having coaching camps and talent assessment for potential selection. Two or three games in the Duleep Trophy with no crowds and an individualistic attitude seems like a bit of a waste to me.

VRV Singh looks better than his figures. That said, he seems to bowl dead straight and without any great seam movement, a bit like mohammad sami.

if he developed a good away going delivery, along with accuracy along with his pace, could get him wickets at the international level.

yup, if he can replicate his domestic form at international level, it would be great

and the best thing about the ipl is that now we can find that out without having to pick him in the indian team

I saw that. He was clearly not out. Rahane got a bad decision in the first inning too. Both times it was Jaiprakash. No wonder we dont have any umpires on the elite panel...

i really like this VRV Singh.

Although he is hyped as a fast bowler, he was only timed at under 130kph. This is not the level of an international bowler who lacks experience. His lack of pace adds to my concern that his domestic form will not translate to international cricket.

timed ? what timed ? how often have you seen him being timed ? i have seen him bowl express and cause discomfort by his unconcerting bounce in south africa and west indies. i have sufficient reason to have faith in him

Agree VRV can be a very good bowler if groomed well.  These days 5fers at the domestic level are a must for him.  I have faith in him too.

well, they do have a speed gun during duleep matches .. if those guns are not faulty, he was indeed timed below 130 (largely in the 125-127 range) through most of the time I saw him bowl today. i think his problem is that his pace drops dramatically in his second and later spells.

Don't get too defensive, I was just making an observation. I have seen him bowl often spells over 140kph, but I worry that he may have shelved pace for accuracy.

Difficult to believe if you see the number of runs he gives away.

North have prevailed again. VRV Singh took 10 wickets in the game and Dhawan hit a fine 94 in the second innings to take them home. The Duleep Trophy winners, North Zone, win by 6 wkts. Will take home 30 lakhs.

I think the problem is that most Indian pace bowlers are single spell bowlers .. which is why they bowl much faster in ODIs than in tests.

That is the reason I am very optimistic about SS and Ishant ... along with their other strengths, their speeds never slip much whether they are bowling the first over of the day or the last.
