The monetary figure is not important...compared to the morale booster ...the recognition that followed the statement that he was the laziest fielder just before the start of the series......

Looking at it in sequence....the immense run saving effort on the field a delivery or two earlier, capping it with a catch termed as outstanding by most , newspapers terming it as a simple catch made to look difficult, commentators reiterating that the catch was immensely good, the award and now the silence of most newspapers .... makes interesting reading of human psyche  8)

This is what I dont like, he takes one catch and people start gloating. Please stop this hype and let him come up with some real performance and I dont know who this 'Grumpy' is (I guess GC) but IMO he is right you are expected to take such catches and I dont expect anyone to go gaga over a catch.

From what I hear, it wasn't a difficult chance, SG misjudged it first, he made it look difficult.

Oracle, SG misjudged it. But even if he had judged it perfectly, it would have been a decent catch. Maybe, you are right about test cricketers having to take such catches because they are test cricketers. But how many Indians have taken such catches?

Yes That was a misjudged one, To me it was like you have ropes behind and are trying to avoid a six. The try was to extremes, Kindd of never die approach, the one Dada is famous for.
His body half way tiltled to right Legs about one feet over the ground, Right hand and angle of 225 degrees. That was soothing to eyes.Had downloaded the video last night.

Something told me dada was thinking something else before he realised it was a catch and then all muscles stretched... As i said.. GOOD SIGHT TO WATCH

jai, I received the password promptly in inbox (gmail). Try your junk folder, else ask for another password.

The download size of the Indian innings: around 32MB each.
I didnt bother with the Pak innings but that one's there too.

you are right.
i didnt see it live but watched it either on NDTV or Star later on. what i could make of it, sg didnt misjudge it he just wasnt back far enough to take it comfortably. call it his 'laziness' if you may, but he in desperation lunged backwards and came up with what looked an incredible catch. it was one of those which either stick or they dont and going by the rest of the match that was the best catch so he deserved the moolah.
but as you say test cricketers are expected to take good catches amongst other things and there is no point gloating over it ad nauseum. well done gangs take a few more and get on with it. i give more credence to his effort at the boundary line which at least showed he wasnt 'lazy' but trying his utmost and that deserves more kudos IMHO.

inoc....that reminds me...goalkeepers are not supposed to dive.......if they do.......purists say...they are correcting their bad initial positioning.
Even then...people do remember Gordon Banks and Lev Yasin!

you are telling this to a goalkeeper.
partly correct because position is everything in goalkeeping but they are also well known for a few shows for the galleries. lol. mostly because diving is second nature to them. comes in handy when you are out of position though.
good comment nevertheless.

my answer is here now.

positonal sense - yasin- was never spectacular because he never needed to be. sepp maier is second to him in this respect.
shot stopping ability - banks- second to none and i believe the only goalkeeper who came close to him was peter schmeichel

joel bats was a safe keeper - many of them in all these years. people remember him for the socrates save in 1982.
higuita is a joker, a good joker i made add but not in the same league.
chilavert - only saw him in the 1998 WC, didnt have access to south american or spanish football then and although had good impressions of him not seen enough to compare him with yasin/banks.
yes yasin did that thats why i have him before banks in my earlier post. just because he wasnt usually spectacular doesnt mean he couldnt be. banks of course got the english media support as well, taking nothing away from his genius.

Hmm safe hands and Ganguly? Dont go together!

On this catch. It was a moderate catch that you expect a test level cricketer to take 9 out of 10 times! What made it hard was that he failed to read it completely and completely mis-judged it. At the last minute he had to make a desperate lunge and was lucky enough to have it stick!

Actually if you wanted to look at a good catch, Bhajju's catch was the one which was truly good. He ran in and covered a lot of ground and was in a perfect position when the ball arrived.

Good fielders make hard chances make easy and poor fielders (or lazy fielders if you may) make moderate efforts look hard since they usually are in a bad position in getting to the ball!
