I hope to find a place in World Cup team: Ganguly

I am all for this man if he works extra hard and finds his place. His experience plus his motivation can only be good for us. I am more for his return to ODI then test though.

SG is delusional - no other word describes his state of mind now.
There is no way he deserves a place in 1 day team on form and fitness and he insists
on believing that juts because he has 10000+ runs - he can make it to the WC team.

Its sad to see someone who has let his ambition blind him to the extent that he cannot see the end of the road.

For the good of India's cricket - he should give this a rest.

JJ, if you read his interview again, you would notice that almost all the time he has emphasized on scoring hard in domestic matches and getting back. he also mentions very clearly that like all others who are dropped, he has equal chance provided he improves/scores. What is wrong with that? I am for one happy that we have good reserve in SG for world cup. Imagine if VS or SRT are injured, there is no one to replace them for WC'07 team then SG.

I understand that, J - point is - the man is not getting any younger - his fielding and fitness remain sub-standard - his batting also in on the wane.
With the likes of Raina waiting in the wings - I do not see a realistic chance for SG in WC.

He should see the writing on the wall as well - and focus on the things he can do - e.g. Test team.

LOL!!!!!!

J (or is it jj??- whoever) Like I said in another post I don't think there's anything wrong in wht SG has said- nothing delusional abt trying to stay optimistic and yet understanding that you have to perform well before you can be expected to come back

Having said that, I agree with the other j tht age is not on his side and it'll be a really tall order to come bck- he really cannot be considered a reserve for WC because other performers are ahead of him if SRT/VS get injured

Heh Heh - split personality ??thats funny .. not true though
I would maintain that SG is delusional if he thinks he deserves  a place in the 1 day team -
Hey Hope and Optimism should be based on reality , not the PAST !!

Sure. but the point is he never said that he deserves a place in the ODI team. Raina is a backup middle order bat. Unless GG makes some major contributions, we have no backup opener who provides confidence (at least for me) in case VS or SRT is injured either during or just before the world cup.

It seems to me that he said his goal for WC'07 -- so ...
Even if GG is injured - I don't think SG deserves that spot - what about his strike rate and fielding ?
Don't go by his past - when sure,  he was a master blaster.

JJ :

Yep. doesen't the season start in september. Also he has the whole county season. WC squad is announced in Jan/Feb I think. So, he'll have enough matches, statistics to prove his current form to be selected for WC. don't you think ?

So, can you tell me does GG deserve the spot of the backup opener for WC as of now ? If yes, then why ? If No, who else is there in your eyes, who can serve this position well for WC07 ? IMO, SG will be in the WC07 squad as backup opener for (1) lack of options (2) lack of time to try newer options. Note, I am assuming that GG will not be successful enough in the limited opportunities he will get to separate himself as the sole backup opener.

Your logic  is based on a very big "IF" - which is - SG bats well and fields well - somehow - I doubt he will be able to do that.
The team mgt will find other options for the backup opener role - maybe GG, maybe someone else - using your own reasoning - there is time to identify that "someone"

Nope. that time is for SG, who is a proven player wth international experience. How can the same time hold for a debutant who has no international experience. International matches are a totally different ball game. It is not a given that a new player with a very good county and domestic record will succeed in 10 ODIs. If GG succeeds, well and good. problem solved. Letz say, he gets a rope of 2 series (Eng and WI ODIs). if e fails, we will have a handful of ODIs (10-12) to try another debutant or two. I still maintain that unless GG succeeds (which I doubt), we have no other choice, but to go back to SG (assuming SG is in good form).

Thats right - quoting you - "assuming , SG is in good form"

The planning for the backup opener slot will begin now - so even relative newcomers
can be groomed !!

This has been discussed in another thread too - and I like bala's response

JJ and bala :

that is the point. GG has done nothing to separate himself from SG. If anything he is averaging even lower than SG. WJ seems a VVS Laxman type player in ODIs - accumulator, cannot accelerate. can build an innings. If no one separates himself from SG, I will pick SG for experience. If VS, SRT go down, big match experience of SG will definitely help. All this assuming of course that SG is in form.

If we can identify an able backup - I'm all for it.

So surprisiingly I am going to speak for SG.

I think it is a very good thing if he wants to play and perform. His interview has been very heartening to me. He seems to have humbled down and is not "demanding" a spot. I think it is very fair if he wants to compete for a spot. I have always said that performance for someone as well connected as SG can not be ignored.

Let him score tons of runs in domestics and shine above everyone else (he may also go to pommie land to play this summer) and if he deserves a spot he should get it.

If he is better than Sehwag or Kaif for that matter he should be included. If he needs to be the backup middle order bat or backup (or first choice) opener then he needs to prove in domestics and if he does he should be included.

More or no More. His performances can not be hidden.

So let him score and we will be happy to root for him to be back.
