Or indeed if she was in a more glamorous sport as compared to athletics etc. Would she have gone to prison for 6 months.

Not that I condone what she has done and or even her perjury in terms of leading the court up the wrong path etc. But to me the offence does not seem as important to send her to prison for 6 months and making her an example when others like Barry Bonds are out scot free.

Isn't it punishment enough for her that she has been stripped of all her records maybe even some of her earnings taken back from her etc. What's the idea of sending her away for 6 months?

I agree with Sudzz. After all she was a great athlete with or without drugs. Back in the old days, there were plenty of cheaters (not just with drugs) from the Soviet Union and East Germany. Some of them were caught, but no one went to jail.

Any reason you're picking on those two countries?! If anything, athletes from Soviet Union could hardly do drugs as they were sure to be test in the Western countries eager to make Russia look bad.

That is why I said "not just drugs". In any case, drug testing was not accurate in those days. I mentionned just those two countries (and I am sure there were others) because they were the ones who were caught most of the time. The two cases I remember is one of Tamara Press (Russia) who was the women's champion in discuss and who was later on found to be a man. East German sledgers (yes, that is a sport ) were found guilty in a winter olympics for pre-heating their sledge so that it could go faster..

The point remains however marion does not deserve jail.

The erstwhile Soviets, East Germans, Czechs etc. had almost perfected the art of performance enhancing drugs, as borne out by so many confessions and revelations emerging post the breakdown of the system.

That not withstanding, We don't need to go this far at all, look at all the drug cheats in the US and look at those that got punished and those that went to jail.

All it takes is for people to have relevant godfathers at the right places.
