Chappell joins Buchanan-bash
By Jon Pierik and Peter Badel
December 23, 2007 AUSTRALIA great Ian Chappell launched an extraordinary attack on John Buchanan, claiming his daughter could have done a better job than the former Australia coach.

Chappell rushed to the defence of great mate Shane Warne, who has been criticised for his panning of Buchanan.

Warne labelled Buchanan a "goose" and said players had to put up with his "verbal diarrhoea" during his nine years in charge of the Australia team.

Chappell has always felt international teams do not need a head coach, and turned up the heat on Buchanan by deriding his superb 75 per cent winning record, including just two Test series defeats. In response to radio talkback whether Warne could not have worked with Buchanan had he been Australia captain, Chappell replied:

"It's a simple decision. The captain is 95 per cent important, the coach is 5 per cent important," he said. "Guess who I am going to worry about first?

"Shane Warne would have been a magnificent attacking captain for Australia.

"A lot of people refer to John Buchanan's record as coach. How many wickets and how many catches and how many runs did he make?

"He didn't make any. His contribution to those victories in my opinion is absolutely nil.

"Is someone going to tell me that if my daughter had coached Australia, would the results have been any different?

"I am here to tell you the results wouldn't have been any different at all. In fact, they might have been better without him there."

Chappell's comments came as Buchanan attempted to diffuse his long-time feud with Warne by declaring he would work harmoniously next year with the retired leg spinner as Cricket Australia coaches.

Buchanan is already employed by CA as a coaching mentor, while Warne is set to accept an offer to be CA's official spinning guru.

"I don't know all the terms of his agreement but my role as an ambassador coach is about coaching coaches and, as I understand, Shane's role is about coaching spin bowling," Buchanan said.

"Obviously, he'll have to work with the coaches as well. There's every likelihood there will be some sort of crossover between us but there's no dramas for me.

"There's every possibility (the pair will work together)."

Responding to Warne's scathing remarks, Buchanan said: "Shane and I disagreeing over issues is no news, is it?

"I've always said one of the healthy things in the Australian cricket team was the difference that existed between everybody.

"It's a very healthy thing in every organisation, you don't want people all of the same view so long as you manage the differences.

"That's something the Australian team has done and will continue to do."

Chappell also took aim at Buchanan's idea of allowing Australia players to represent rival nations as a way of strengthening international standards and ensuring this current team was tested.

"The thing is, if you think about that suggestion, it's exactly what Warney said, it's from pixie-land," he told 3AW radio.

"What you are saying is that we need to find (countries) to compete against Australia, so what he is suggesting is you send off players who can't make the Australian side to play for other teams.

"How is that going to help those other teams beat Australia? It doesn't make any sense."

MELBOURNE, December 23: Launching a lampoon at John Buchanan, former captain Ian Chappell has said that his daughter would not have done a bad job as a coach of the Australian team.

Defending spin great Shane Warne, who has been criticised for his panning of Buchanan, Chappell said the former coach's contribution in Australia's dream run was nil.

"It's a simple decision. The captain is 95 per cent important, the coach is five per cent important. Guess who I am going to worry about first?" Chappell was quoted as saying by the 'News Limited.'

"Shane Warne would have been a magnificent attacking captain for Australia."

Is it so? Let us see Australia hire his brother first as coach, who they won't touch with a barge pole.

But IC has been consistent with his views w.r.t. coach's contribution in cricket, even when GC was coaching and even before GC was coach and even after GC was coach. Heard him on TV numerous times saying the coach's contribution was at the max 5-10%.

And I would agree that even the worst coach in the history of cricket would not altered the fortunes of Aussies during this period. McGrath and Warne were that good.

A negligible coach is still better than a negative coach. In that respect, Buchanan's contribution can't be run down.
