To Chappell-haters
« on: December 09, 2007, 05:16:32 PM »
I am not quite aware of the exact reasons of the intense Chappell hate on this board. Please can Chappell-ites stay out of this thread as it will lead to flaming, I just want to know people's reasons for hating Greg Chappell:

Do you think that he had malicious motives?
Do you think that he was a poor coach?
Etc...but please go into some detail.

For the record, I have no view on Chappell because I am unaware of his precise work and can only judge on results, which is not the best judge of a coach.

It is ONLY due to the fact that he kicked out God from the team. No number of words change this fact.

I am breaking my self-imposed silence on the SG-GC spat. I will attempt to answer the questions.

1. Do you think that he had malicious motives?

He probably did not have something deep-seated at the point. In the best possible scenario, he decided to go hammer and tongs at Ganguly since he likely believed that it was the only way to evict him from the team. Having made a mistake, he should have apologized. He seems to be willing to go any extent to defend views he formed at one point. He used malice in attacking Ganguly and making a case of him being horrible both on and off the field. Time has proven that many of those character assassination views were plain wrong.

The first time I strongly doubted the veracity of Chappell's statements (afraid to face Zimbabwe fast bowling, scheming within the team, divide and rule) was when Tendulkar stood up for SG when speaking with Pawar. Clearly a person like SRT knows to separate the chaff from the grain and likely displays integrity. After that, Chappell has been behaving like a buffoon. Taking credit for Ganguly's comeback -- the way he worded it -- was stunningly shameless. Even worse was the uncalled for accusation that Ganguly was hurt because of lack of income! IMO, Ganguly has grounds for a defamation lawsuit against Chappell. Whether one likes Ganguly's game or not, the episode illustrated one guy maintaining dignity in the best possible way he could, and the other guy showing a profound lack of civilized behavior. And this was before Ganguly's fantastic run of form.

2. Do you think that he was a poor coach?

Absolutely. The duty of a coach IMO is to help people not in the team work towards coming back; not just throwing them out with contempt. Also, this trial by media that he engaged in was reprehensible. The way he washed his hands off the World Cup debacle with the email expose, showed that he was not fit to be a leader. Finally, his web site quoting physics loosely and incorrectly makes one seriously doubt his coaching acumen. Great player Greg Chappell surely was. That clearly does not extend in any form to coaching. His track record in coaching teams prior to India was also abysmal. It baffles logic why Rajasthan and some other honchos still fund his adventures in India. I hope their largesse leads him to develop some humility after some time. After all, that money is indirectly coming from the common-man cricket lover who Greg supposedly respects.

Very good points by KoP. I did not want to write anything because I am certainly not a Chappel-hater. I only have zero respect for his coaching acumen and think poorly of him as a person. Not the same thing  ;D

I would also add that Chappel's maniacal ego-driven behavior polarized fans and drove wedges in the team (you are either for GC or against) and fans. India lost (upto now) the most successful test bat who seems to have been isolated by the rest for his weird behavior in the presence of GC. He may have poisoned the minds of youngsters by telling them that some undeserving Maharathis were keeping them out. He may also have destroyed some young talent by exposing them prematurely.

chappell is a bad coach. i had no idea what he was like before but i know now that he is bad. this has nothing to do with his policy of inducting youth/ better fielding ability etc. what he lacks as a coach is man management. none of his ideas are new -you and me were aware of it long before he was at the helm.

i however think that he may be more than useful at the sub india level where his notions can be adhered to. ultimately that might benefit the indian team as a whole. however i dont think we need GC to do that - what i can see in the general state of cricket in the last few years the indian team is going to be a much more atheletic and professional in the years to come, GC or not.

The Australian and South African teams have shown us long back the gains of a good fielding side. We have seen the results others have got........we only need to adapt ourselves to that level.

Was Chappell a Good coach - NO
Was he a good human being - Events prove otherwsie ...so answer is NO

We have been thru' this for two years now and just as people will keep finding holes in SG's game and use his personal life to further their arguments, the dislike for GC will continue...

At the end of the day, it is there for all to see...Who is in and Who is out .... End of story
