October 29, 2007

Praveen Kumar, the Uttar Pradesh allrounder, has escaped unscathed after he fell from an open jeep during a reception organised after his return to Meerut from the Challenger Trophy.

The procession had been organised by his fans to celebrate his selection in to the Indian squad for the first two one-dayers against Pakistan.

He was rushed to the hospital and X-rays did not reveal any injury, police said. Kumar then went for a practice session to a nearby ground.

Kumar to nine wickets for India Red in the Challenger Trophy, but his side lost to India Blue in the final.

I can't explain it, but this just about puts the nail down on the head that he will have a successful game in the event that he debuts in the 5 match ODI series.

It's my complex system of beliefs.

how do you define a successful game?

as per a lot of newspapers, Jogi had two successful games in the T-20 cup ... a) when he kept the Aussies to under 22 runs in the last over; b) when he induced Misbah ul Haq to hit a stupid shot and was lucky that SS kept his butterfingers away for Symonds

Extreme stupidity - this parade for "getting selected"

Over the top stuff in Indian cricket.

i think the twenty20 euphoria has caught on - it was hilarious and somewhat sad to read that anandV had "volunteers" arranged by NIIT thronging the airport to give him a welcome. to his credit, he was very gracious about it all and said that he was touched. ;D

Since you asked, I'll explain briefly. Something bad happens to you then something good will happen to you. In this case, a poor final for Preveen Kumar and falling from a car is the prelude to a successful ODI series. The time frame can be anything though; from Pathan's drop to his triumphant comeback or even Sourav Ganguly's comeback after his drop. Another example is Dinesh Karthik's hundred just a few days after he was dropped.

However, if something good happens to you then something bad cannot be far away.

In terms of cricket, your overall ability determines the ratio and magnitude of the 'good' or 'bad' occurances. In terms of life, social skills and wealth are two of the main determining factors.

Complex but always comes true for me.

Good one..actually, not that complex..

..and hopefully, the "fitted curve" is upward sloping (where Y-axis is the desired outcome).

oh cool. i always wondered why Agarkar is repeatedly selected.

his "bad" on the field is compensated by the "good" - getting selected again - which is compensated by the "bad" on the field and so on.

From CricInfo profile, and an accurate one IMO:

The Indian selectors have quite often been notorious in curbing the careers of budding pace bowlers with their policy of hiring and firing. The list is long and one of them was Thirunavakarasu Kumaran.`Kenny' as he is known to close friends, was selected for the national side largely on the basis of one performance - a ten-wicket haul in the Irani Trophy match against Karnataka at Bangalore at the break of the 1999-2000 season. He was the surprise choice for the tour of Australia and to give him some international experience prior to the tour, he was played in the one day internationals against New Zealand. Kumaran did well enough to show that he merited selection and on the tour of Australia, he performed beyond expectations in the first-class games prior to the first Test. It was taken for granted that he would be in the side but Agarkar was preferred. He took this disappointment in his stride but another one followed when he was one of five players to be replaced for the Carlton & United one-day series.

A product of the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai, Kumaran received personal training from Dennis Lillee and has also benefited from a stint at the Australian Academy in Adelaide. He was mentally strong, but never really recovered from the setback and within a year he had disappeared from the game.
