The way I see it, of the batsmen this particular squad, YS is the only certainty when one looks at the team two years down the line. GG, RU, RS, KKD have not cemented their spots. RD, SRT, SG should have made way by then.
I would ensure that I give YS an opportunity to play enough overs in each and every match.
VS is bound to come back at some point ...so, one of the seniors should continue to open but then make way for VS at the top of the order when he comes back.
The other opening slot, for the moment, should go to RU ... in each and every match. Let him play with one senior at the other end to guide him .. irrespective of whether he fails a few times or India loses a few matches. If we had started with this at the beginning of the England ODI series, we would have had a fair idea by now of where he stands ..whether it makes sense to keep him in the squad or send him back to the domestics.
RS should have played each and every match at No.4. Figure out whether he is good or not ...and take a call whether to stick with him or look at the next hopeful.
So, that makes it:
RU
SRT/SG (dont particularly care either way - keeping slot warm for VS)
YS
RS
RD (still need to figure out who can come in here)
SG/SRT (the one who is not opening)
