Dude, One doesn't have to be good looking to be sexy. I still remember a girl I saw at the Mumbai Air Show some 8-9 years ago as the sexiest lady I have seen, She didn't have a pretty face, but wow she was hot. That's probably the only thing I remember about the Show.

Look @ the anatomy not the face. I find Isha Deol Sexier than '170-Pound-out-of-shape' Basu.

I agree with your cover the face, .... defn for hot but sometimes it is difficult to do that. Esha falls under that category for me, I dont find her sexy at all. I guess Dhruv leans towards my thinking on this.

Kban - Serena weighs 130 lbs, I am sure Bipasha weighs more or at least almost same. Serena is fitter and looks hot in her self designed outfits plus she can play tennis, she can act as well as Bips darling and I bet being a afro girl, she can shake her booty better than Bipasha.

All that was said was that Dhruv and I didnt find Venus (as well as Serena in my case) hot, our reasons being she looked too masculine and tall (maybe, I dont find Sharapova's height to be a problem). And all of a sudden, you asked, why is it that women have to be ~~fair~~ (correction) white to be hot.

To add to this, I find Bipasha sexy while you dont. Shall we use the same logic there and conclude that, for you, being white is the sole criteria for being hot?

Well, to each his own, I say. No need to join them if you cannot beat them... the clergy anyway have a one-track mind.

Point is, there cannot be one criteria for beauty. Beauty does and should lie in the eyes of the beholder. As long as we all recognise that, and accept the fact that much of our knowledge and information systems are filtered through the prism of the society we live in and it's deep seated biases and the peer pressure that results from it, all is fine. But if instead we rather than glibly accept that our choices are based on secular information, and therefore unaffected by personal subjectivities and societal upbringing, something is seriously wrong.

In the case of India, we know what it is, or at least we can make some intelligent guesses. Look at how Nyonika Chatterjee and Nethra Raghuraman, fashion models both broke thru the ranks and created the space for the Bipashas. Could anyone imagine a ramp model who were as dark -- before them?

But also look at the fact: this did not happen in the 70's or 80's. It happened in the 90's, with liberalisation and the proliferation of boutique/couture shopping, rise in profile of the fashion industry, entry of intl. model agencies who were looking for 'ethnic' looking models, and plumped for the above two, leaving aside the Mehr Jessias who ruled the roost then. Once 'international' [read 'western'] recognition was achieved, there was nothing wrong anymore with the Indian scene to accept them.

Which is why Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, Halle Berry can all be looked up to as ideals of beauty by avg. Indians now. But that is of course not the whole story. We have our own deep seated prejudices too, so the Black supermodels will in general be accepted, but only with a snigger.

I am of course speaking from memory and personal experience.

To sum up, the second issue [that of Negroid, or say Mongoloid origins, and how to appreciate them] is more intransigent and probably has more subtle variations than the picture I painted above, but as with the first, lets hope with the rise in confidence amongst the 'global Indians', some day, not far away, we'll not have to wait for a foreign recognition for acknowledging the talent and beauty we have in us at the least.
