Match thread - 1st Test - Ind v Eng , Lord's , 2007
« on: July 19, 2007, 08:20:29 AM »
7.30am Good morning and welcome to our coverage of the Lord's Test. The early news is that, as expected, Matthew Hoggard will not be fit to play and his place will be taken by either James Anderson or Chris Tremlett.

It was clear and sunny earlier today but low, leaden clouds have sneaked in and the Met Office forecast warns that scattered showers could feature later in the day. At least it will be warm, with temperatures around 23°C. Tomorrow is an altogether different story, 17°C and heavy rain with only a slight improvement on Saturday. Will this summer ever start? Check out the forecast here.

MCC members have been queuing outside Lord's since shortly after dawn - not anything like as many as there were for Australia in 2005, but enough. The MCC has been keeping them stocked up with tea and coffee ...

Weather report -  London & South East England

Headline:
Sunny intervals but scattered heavy showers developing again.

Today:
Sunny intervals for all parts and becoming quite warm but with scattered showers developing again which may be heavy in places this afternoon with a risk of thunder. Maximum temperature 23 °C.

Tonight:
Showers mostly dying away, sunny intervals to finish the day. Most areas dry for a time overnight although outbreaks of rain likely in many places later, perhaps heavy and thundery. Minimum temperature 12 °C.

9.45 am Here's the England team.

1 Andrew Strauss, 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Michael Vaughan (capt), 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Ian Bell, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Chris Tremlett, 9 Ryan Sidebottom, 10 James Anderson, 11 Monty Panesar

No Lord's debut for Stuart Broad. A little unlucky perhaps, after his 5 for 76 for England Lions against the Indians at Chelmsford. You'll know the Indian XI as soon as we do ...

Any predictions on the toss? And what Dravid will choose if he wins?

I say that he will choose to bat first.

Vaughan will win the toss and put India in to bat

Reasons : First use of whatever juice is there in the wicket
Early wickets will give an advantage
If it rains intermittently, start ..stop games can be very frustrating for the batting side...
Day two onwards, could ease out a bit...so if Eng can get India out within a reasonably low score,           would be advantage England

IMO, whoever wins toss ..will bat.

Both teams don't have bowling.. so the only way to win is to score high and early..and let the bowlers do their thing with the pressure of high score

This Indian tactic of holding the team back till the last minute is a bit funny. Or has it been announced already?

Win the toss and bat unless you can be sure of bowling the opposition out for less than 200.

Well, frankly, YS had all the opportunities ... if he could not blast his way into the batting line up conclusively despite everyone barring RD going through a very lean phase over the last 3 years, he's got to take a fair share of the blame. MK has done better than everyone, barring RD.

Are the bowlers being changed because they are getting tired or because they had a bad an expensive over? (Khan, Ganguly, RPS?)

At the end of the day, considering the pitch (belter), I think this is evenly poised test. I would even say, @ 268/4 on a belter 1st day's pitch, the balance is slightly tilted in India's favor today. But I put it an 50-50, considering our inability to remove the tail.

JFX : Jokes aside, yes we have always struggled to remove the night watchman and then he will go on score big or hang in there till lunch the next day. I think our bowlers get frustrated a lot and the more the frustration the less the wickets.
