First impressions - Sivaji Rocks !!!! (non-cricket)
« on: June 15, 2007, 07:14:01 AM »
A viewer writes in.......

If I was asked to give just one word to describe the movie, it would be 'cool.'

Okay, so it is a riches-to-rags-to-riches tale. There is no logic in the movie. I can tell you the story in one line. The villains are dumb and incapable of causing any harm to the hero, in spite of being taller and stronger. The heroine is super pretty and she falls for our hero rather effortlessly.

But seriously, who cares about all this? I was sitting in a theatre in Atlanta after paying $21 for a ticket -- that's a Sivaji Special rate; I would think twice if I had to pay half that price to watch Spider-Man 3.

But honestly, I could give that money once more just for the movie experience. There was this guy in the theatre who wore a Sivaji-style wig, and entertained people even before the movie started. There was another guy, who spent around $50 on popcorn and distributed it to everyone so people could throw it in the air when Rajni filled the screen. Another gang brought camphor and pumpkins to show to a Rajni poster. They started dancing and yelling way before the film started.

For every 'cool' dialogue that Rajni mouthed, there were whistles, trumpets, claps, yells and the adrenaline was constantly pumping. Well, that's what you get from a Rajni movie and that's worth every penny you pay and more!

Dhada Dhadavena nadapathum style, pada padavena siripadhum style, vara vara ellame style -- That pretty much sums the movie experience. Lets welcome the enigma, the rock star, the uncrowned king of Indian cinema once more! And will he satisfy his fans? Hell, the movie is going to burn cash registers for sure!

The film starts with Rajni returning from the US. Like most Shankar movies, the story revolves around the hero's plan to transform India into a developed country. Like most Rajni movies, the protagonist overcomes the hurdles and builds his fortune. Cliched it is, it all ends up going to the benefit of the poor.

The first half is filled with humour and is so steadily paced that the viewer never loses interest. The second half is action-packed, with Rajni at the helm of affairs. From romancing Shriya to bashing the villains, Rajni does everything in style. The scene where he does a Sivaji, MGR and Kamal Hassan is truly magic!

Shriya looks beautiful and enacts her role well. Vivek brings the house down with his comic timing and dialogues! Suman, as the villain, is adequate. The rest of the supporting cast helps build the story.

Shankar has done a great job presenting the film to Rajni fans! From song picturisation to screenplay, his efforts are seen in every frame. Any word to describe A R Rahman's music would not be enough. His music rocks!

Rajni fans are going to lap this one up like never before. He is the only reason why this film rocks.

Now some (if not most) of Rajani's earlier movies had the following situations:

Sequence 1
Scene: The climax of Tyagi (the Hindi remake of Dharmadurai, an early 90s Rajni movie in Tamil that starred Gauthami). The villain takes a shot at Rajni, but of course our Superstar just jumps up and catches the bullet in his hand... What a catch!

Sequence 2
Scene: The climax of Padayappa (anyone who hasn't seen this great Rajni starrer has not witnessed the might of Shivaji Ganesan and Rajnikant together!). Rajni's daughter is in love with his enemy's son, played by Tam heartthrob (yeuuuck) Abbas. Mustaffa, Mustaffa, my ass. Abbas' parents are getting him married off by force, but Rajni comes to the rescue and carries Abbas away in his Ambassador/Fiat (No, I still can't tell the difference! - Sundar)... On the way, there's a roadblock - about three dozen goons waiting for the Superstar. He asks Abbas to stay in the car, but Abbas says, ``Sir! I should take care of them, after all your age...'' Rajni smiles a gentleman's smile, and says, ``I will show you how OLD I am''....
Needless to say, within the first minute, 50% of the three dozen goons are on the ground wishing they hadn't messed with this ex-bus conductor.
Abbas just smiles from inside the car, shakes his head (and this guy made women crazy... why?) and says, ``You haven't aged at all''...
A minute later, someone manages to cause a small rip in Rajnikant's shirt... Rajni takes this opportunity to get totally pissed and tears off his shirt..
Then there's a stunt double who shows off his chest and rippling muscles (supposed to be Rajnikant, but you can easily notice the difference) to the goons, who get ready to * their pants...
And Abbas, still inside the car, says with a lot of admiration on his face, ``What a man!''
Female heartthrob, my ass!

Sequence 3
Rajni gets to know that the bad dude is on the other side of a very high wall, so high that even Rajni can't use his radioactive powers to scale it. Instead, Rajni uses the satellite technique. He throws one gun high up in the air, and shoots it with his other revolver. The first bullet hits the trigger of the second gun, which fires directly at the bad dude, proving that it IS possible to waste bullets and still end up looking real cool in the process!

Sequence 4
Rajni's sitting on the edge of a swimming pool talking to the villain (who's in the pool). On the other side of the pool, half a dozen goondas wait for instructions from their boss. Eventually, the bad dude gives the signal (in this case, a wink) and each man throws a knife at Rajni. Our superstar effortlessly catches them all with just the swing of one hand, and all at the same time. He then spreads them out evenly like playing cards, so that all knives are visible, and then throws them back, of course killing all six goons in the process.
``Yisey kehte hain yek teer se chai shikaar''

Sequence 5
In this other movie, Rajni is a police officer sitting on his motorbike under a coconut tree, when he sees a couple of goons making their getaway in a car... He grabs the clutch, puts his bike in gear... and fires his gun in the air. A coconut falls on the starter and Rajni releases his clutch and away he goes in pursuit of the bad guys! Apparently this is called Coconut triggering...

Sequence 6
Another half a dozen goondas accost Rajni. Rajni pulls something out of his pocket... is it a gun? Nah, nothing that ordinary. Its a knife. Of course, true to Rajni style, all his actions make the wind-whooshing sound (later copied by all the martial arts movies in Hong Kong - when will they ever learn to be original!!) But Rajni is not interested in bloodshed.... he just raises his knife in his hand and gives it some acceleration in the +y direction
and some finite angular momentum in the +y direction (for the physically challenged, that means he sets it rotating in a plane parallel to the ground), and the knife turns into a perpetual machine... The knife keeps rotating in air, apparently the gravitational force balanced by some mysterious force, and the air resistance taken into account by some mysterious motor... Rajni has turned into Lord Vishnu with this Sudarshan Chakra! All this being
overwhelming for the goondas, the faint. Rajni walks away unhurt, smiling and shaking his head in his inimitable style... (``Eeeeedu eppadi irukku'')

Does this new film also has some interesting scenes like these?

After all, if Rajanicant, then who else can?

how exactly does he rock?

Style, Charisma, Screen Presence, Dialogue Delivery.

his style? really? his attire reminds of the 90s circus clowns, while not being a greek god myself but come on does he have the looks or the age to carry off style?

Kazhudhaikku theriyuma karpoora vaasanai (tamizh muhaavra, meaning does a donkey know the smell of camphor)   :D :D :D

his acting? please...

If one excludes Kamal, he's a better actor than any other contemporary hero in the tamizh film industry.

What I would agree is that both Kamal and Rajini should start acting their age in movies too, just like AB. Both are pretty good actors and can easily transition into such roles.

Abbas actually said "Otta Man". It was changed to What a Man" during dubbing/re-recording  ;D ;D

Sure it does. I don't want to spoil the fun for other Rajini fans by mentioning them.....

Here's a sample punchline of the movie:

Jai, not sure if you saw "Padaiyappa" - this is the movie with the scene where Rajni tears his shirt off to show muscles. It is rajni himself and not a double. And there really wasnt all that much muscle, more a lack of fat.

Rajni mania rocks India

In time-honoured tradition, gallons of milk were poured on Rajnikanth cutouts in Chennai on Friday as fans welcomed the superstar’s latest — Sivaji: The Boss.

Elsewhere, producers AVM organised a special screening for Jayalalithaa, who wouldn’t settle for anything less than a first-day viewing. In Bangalore, fans tossed money on the screen as Thalaivar (as Rajnikanth is fondly called) appeared.

In Malaysia, the film is reportedly booked over the next three weeks at 52 screens. In Seattle, fans converged from all over the US for a special Friday night premiere.

In Delhi, the film opened to packed houses — PVR cinemas were considering doubling the number of shows in some audis next week.

Some crazy Rajni fans reportedly travelled all the way to the Capital from Chennai to catch a show, because getting Sivaji tickets down South is mission impossible right now.

Rajnikanth is back, younger and fitter than he has ever looked in recent times, thanks to yoga, a veggie diet and Manish Malhotra’s wardrobe. “We were happy to see Thalaivar so energetic and young. His stunts are amazing. As for the story, we’ll focus on that only at our third or fourth viewing,” said Vijay Mohan, a college student from Chennai who paid Rs 600 for a ticket.

While a sold-out first month was a foregone conclusion in South India, what has pleasantly surprised the trade is the response the film has received in the north, particularly Delhi.

Sivaji, reportedly the most expensive film in Indian history (at an estimated budget of Rs 60 crore), has had a housefull opening in the Delhi-NCR region. “We are sold out at all audis till the middle of next week,” said Shalu Sabharwal, vice-president, sales and marketing, PVR. “The film has repeat value even in the north Indian circuit. Although the majority audience at our audis is Tamil, even non-Tamilians are going in. Rajni seems to have a lot of fans in north India too.”

While the film opened in one show each at two PVR screens in Delhi, and in two shows each at two PVR screens in Gurgaon, clearly there is a demand for more shows.

Says Sabharwal, “Given the positive response, we plan to run Sivaji in two shows even in the Delhi screens during the second week.”

While no major unrest has been reported so far, about 60 protestors in Bellary, Karnataka, were taken into custody while demonstrating over the actor's silence on the Cauvery water dispute. The political overtones have not dampened the party for Rajni's fans, though.

The going rate of a Rs 75-ticket in the black market at Bangalore is an astonishing Rs 1,000.

At another Bangalore theatre, Cauvery, the staff was forced to open the counters at 9 a.m. because fans had queued up since Thursday evening to buy tickets. Those who could not get tickets were seen celebrating outside every cinema hall.

“How can we miss his movie? He's God,” said Vijaykumar Gowda, a youth who travelled to Bangalore from Hassan, 180 km away, for the first show at Urvashi theatre.

The film is also drawing packed houses in almost every major Indian city, including Hyderabad and Mumbai.

“There are long queues outside our Mumbai multiplexes, of people who will settle for whichever show is available,” says PVR's Sabharwal.

In this era of wide release and multiplexing, that is a rarity. In fact, given its wide-release (252 screens across the world) strategy, sections of the trade had declared the film a super-hit even before release, predicting a minimum net profit of Rs 25 crore for the distributors.

It can all be summed up in Rajni's own line: “Summa adhirudhu illa (it reverberates, doesn't it)?”

By the look of it, not just Tamil Nadu will be reverberating to the Rajnikanth rhythm over the next few weeks.

A Rajnikant fan pours milk on a cut-out of the actor in Chennai on Friday to ward off any evil eye on the southern star’s latest film, Sivaji — the Boss, that was released on Friday. One of the first-day viewers was ADMK chief Jayalalithaa, who found the film excellent. “I have no doubt that for Rajni also it is going to be a big success. My best wishes with Rajni,” she said. The actor had made strong statements against Jayalalithaa before her rout in the 1996 elections. (PTI)

Guys Iam just back from the movie hall and the word I would use to describe the movie is

"COOL"
[size=10pt][/size]

Really over the top in every sense of the word, reminded me of the mega block busters of Manmohan Desai with excellent special effects and of course Rajani the Boss or as they say in Chennai Rajani Saar the Baass.

Worth a watch even for non tamilians who are interested in three hours of non stop fun, entertainment and extremly mind numbing fun.....

Rajni: The man with the Midas touch

The country's highest-paid film star is also its most famously reclusive one. Rajnikanth's [Images] latest blockbuster Sivaji: The Boss released this weekend across 760 screens to hysterical audiences as India's most expensive film.

Preceding its box-office debut, the lead actor addressed his fans from Tirupathi, prints were carried on elephant-back accompanied by a traditional band in Kerala's [Images] Sultanpetta to the local Vadakkunthari temple to be handed over by the priest to the theatre manager, and bookings closed a record three weeks in advance.

Star-struck fans flew from across the globe for the screenings for which companies like software giants TCS [Get Quote] and Cognizant had blocked seats. The serpentine queues at cinema halls was akin to that of waiting for darshan at a deity's sanctum sanctorum.

At the centre of this mass adulation is an actor known less for his histrionics than his ability to spin cigarettes in the air, split bullets into two and flip his sunglasses in a way that appeals to frontbenchers.

Yet, the 57-year-old thespian of southern cinema commands audiences that would be the envy of Amitabh Bachchan [Images] or Shah Rukh Khan [Images]. He does one film in two years, is perversely reclusive, has an unexplained following in Japan [Images], and has been churning out hits with regularity. Famously, his roles have remained the same -- the hard-drinking, hard-smoking, street-smart anti-hero who plays an impossible 20-something in his films.

Inexplicably, South India's greatest star, and possibly Asia's second-highest paid actor after Jackie Chan [Images], is Marathi by birth and started out as a bus conductor. Shivaji Rao Gaekwad -- popularly known as Rajnikanth, or Rajni -- whose Sivaji opened on Friday with breakthrough technology being used for the first time in India, has rewritten the rules of celluloid history.

Not only is Sivaji AVM Productions's most expensive film, it has given the star a lighter skin tone in the film. Costume designers from Bollywood, including Manish Malhotra, were specially flown in to create costumes for the actor. French hairstylist Sandrine Verrier Seth worked on different hairstyles to make him look younger.

Completed over 18 months, Sivaji's Super 35 format makes the cinemascope broader and provides a panoramic vision to the viewer. But the technology and razzmatazz has come at a cost -- AVM isn't ready to share how much it has spent, but estimates vary between Rs 60 and Rs 80 crore -- that analysts would normally find difficult to justify.

Yet, the film is not just likely to recover its costs, it could end up making a whooping Rs 150 crore in the first three weeks alone. And Rajni is using the hysteria around Sivaji to promote his next film, Sultan: The Warrior, in the form of a 45-second teaser in screens screening his film.

In fact, Adlabs [Get Quote] is producing its second animation film based on the character of Rajnikanth, the first-ever animation film to be made on a film personality. Being made in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and English and directed by Rajnikanth's daughter Soundarya, it is likely to be the most expensive animation film ever made in India.

Also, Hutch-Essar has tied up with AVM on an exclusive deal that includes caller tunes, wallpaper downloads and even contests around the movie. "It's the biggest deal we have done in a regional language around a movie," says a senior executive.

In a record of sorts, 20 percent of Hutch subscribers in Tamil Nadu have downloaded one of the songs from the movie as their caller tunes.

For a mega-movie, Sivaji has spent very little on marketing and promotions -- the 1.5 million fans in over 15,000 fan clubs across the country have done that through word of mouth themselves. In AVM's Rajeshwar theatre, the Rajnikant Fan Association has already booked the cinema hall for three days.

Of Sivaji's 760 prints, 300 have been released in Telegu, 303 in Tamil, 145 have been reserved for foreign shores, and 12 for North India. It is this dichotomy that is hard to understand. For the vast majority of north, west and east India's cinema audiences, Rajnikanth's name rings few bells.

Yet, filmmakers dream of working with him, distributors swear by him, co-actors find it hard to match his screen presence, and frenzied fans refer to him as 'thalaivar' or leader. Though he starred in 1980s Hindi films alongside stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha [Images] and Sridevi [Images]  -- and an aberrant Hollywood film, Bloodstone -- he made no inroads into Bollywood's popular culture.

Yet, "he is a complete star," says film analyst Taran Adarsh, "So why should he play the numbers game in Bollywood when he was already a major hit down south?"

Ravi Chopra, managing director of BR Films, insists, "It isn't that he was a flop in Bollywood, it's just that he has his own unique style of acting and dialogue delivery."

Like Adarsh, Chopra finds Rajni the quintessential entertainer, "a total legend whom no star comes close to".

Many compare him with Amitabh Bachchan: after all, he has starred in several remakes of Bachchan films, among them Don and Laawaris, yet he gets paid nearly three times what the Big B [Images] gets. Even in non-southern markets like Mumbai, Sivaji has created records, opening at PVR Cinemas with seven shows at two of its properties and '75 percent advance bookings' over the weekend.

Surprisingly, PVR isn't the only theatre chain that has witnessed such a response. Adlabs, Cinemax India [Get Quote] and Inox [Get Quote] are all in the race. Cinemax India, which is running eight shows across four properties in Mumbai, expects to earn over Rs 6 lakh over the weekend. "We are hoping to buy an additional five prints in the second week," says Devang Sampat, vice president (marketing and programming), Cinemax India.

No wonder Rajni commands the subcontinent's highest price among actors. For Sivaji, his 100th Tamil film (he has acted in a total of 170 films), he is estimated to have been paid about Rs 15 crore, plus commissions, taking the total to around Rs 18-22 crore.

Nor does he lend himself to endorsements. In film after film, he has caricatured himself -- earlier it was through his mannerisms alone, but in recent years, it is through a clever positioning of himself vis--vis the supplicant politician, the political party asking him to join them, or his patriotism for Tamil Nadu.

Does he have political ambitions? There are many precedents of stars-turned-politicians in South India. Rajni -- a neighbour of Jayalalitha in Chennai's Poe's Gardens -- has provided support to political parties and issues in the past, but does not seem in any hurry to turn his popular support into open canvassing for himself -- yet.

But his punchlines from his films do contain political advice and conviction, sometimes as double entendre. He might say, "I will do what I say, I will also do what I don't say", in one film, and in another, "When I will arrive, or how I will arrive, nobody will know, but I will arrive when I ought to."

No wonder carnival-like scenes were witnessed on June 10 in Chennai when advance bookings for Sivaji opened -- and not just to suss out Rajni's latest "punch" dialogues.

With advance booking for all shows now closed, the state government directive that any film with a Tamil title cannot be sold for a price over Rs 50 in single screen theatres is suffering a huge setback (though some see it as Rajni's victory) with reports filtering in of tickets being sold in black for anywhere from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000.

Apart from Rajni, what is so special about Sivaji? The movie has assembled some of the biggest names in the Tamil film industry. Produced by AVM, one of the largest and oldest film production houses in India, it has been directed by S Shankar, who has given record hits at the box office to the lilting scores of A R Rehman.

If Sivaji's production cost have scaled new benchmarks, the sale of film rights are the highest in the industry. Abhirami Ramanathan, owner of Abhirami theatres in Chennai and president of the Chennai Theatre Owners' Association, and GV Films, has bought the film rights for the Chennai circle at a whopping Rs 6.25 crore. The film rights are distributed region-wise in other parts of Tamil Nadu.

Already, estimates are that the screening rights in theatres have been sold for Rs 60-70 crore in Tamil Nadu, and overseas rights for an additional Rs 18 crore. Satellite rights for Sivaji have been sold for Rs 4 crore to the yet-to-be-launched Kalaignar TV, a Tamil television channel being planned by the DMK in association with Chennai-based Raj Television network [Get Quote]. Riding on great expectations, AVM Productions is expected to clock revenues of over Rs 150 crore before three weeks are out.

Swaroop Reddy, director, Satyam [Get Quote] Cinemas, says the purchase price for the Chennai city rights is a record figure. For the first time in the history of Tamil cinema, a film will screen simultaneously on 18 screens in Chennai, against an average release on six-seven screens.

Satyam Theatre Complex will exhibit the film on two screens and tickets for the first 10 days have been sold out. "The response has been fabulous," Reddy says, adding that expectations in the corporate sector are also high with a number of companies requesting bulk bookings for their employees -- in vain.

Chennai-based movie theatre chain Pyramid Saimira Theatres has acquired the distribution rights for some parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu as well as the Malaysian market. The total exposure of the company to these three markets is about Rs 25 crore and Rajnikant is set to get pulses racing in 200 theatres.

P S Saminathan, managing director, Pyramid Saimira, says the company is expecting returns in the first few weeks and hopes to reap bumper profits. "The Rs 1,100 crore Tamil film industry is much more streamlined than Bollywood. The concept-to-finish chain is much shorter in the Tamil and Telugu film industries."

Reddy says Rajni is the most saleable actor in south India and no other star can hold a torch to him. His movies run successfully not just in Tamil Nadu but also in all the southern states.

Though Chiranjeevi [Images] is the leading star in Andhra Pradesh, he has not been able to spread his popularity across other states. Rajni is on par with top stars in Andhra Pradesh, while in Karnataka, in terms of box office appeal, he is undeniably powerful.

Popular in Malaysia, Japan and Indonesia, Rajni's movies enjoy a minimum guarantee all over the world and almost always notch up huge profits. No wonder, says AVM's CEO Babu S C, "not a single distributor backed out or had an iota of doubt about the returns on their investment."

Sivaji (and Rajnikanth) appear to be laughing all the way from the box office counters even before the projector lights were switched on. The spate of advance bookings has by itself created history in cinema-crazy Chennai.

Sivaji has beaten all previous records and could write a new chapter in the annals of the Tamil film industry. Of course, it would be a corollary to that most viewed chapter of all -- the master actor himself who once famously 'punched lined': 'My way is the unique way.'

Sivaji gold rush sweeps the globe

Every Rajnikanth [Images] release is a festival of sorts for his diehard fans. But with the superstar's latest release Sivaji: The Boss, the fans have outdone themselves.
Here is a look at what happened around the world during the release of the star's 100th Tamil movie.

From the United States to Britain, from the Gulf countries to the South Asian countries, Sivaji has ruled, with the South Indian Diaspora lapping up the film. An online booking site claimed that the opening shows across the United States were sold out within 24 hours.

'Nothing like this has ever been witnessed before. Shows in New Jersey, Chicago, Minneapolis and Virginia are experiencing unheard of sales. One of the biggest centres in the nation, San Jose/Fremont, will be opening up shortly. There is no doubt this centre will have sold out crowds in a matter of hours,' the site said.

In Chicago, for instance, the film was booked for the first 12 weekends even before its release, with fans paying up to $25 for a ticket. When Spider-Man 3 opened, the tickets were priced at $18.

The Chicago Tribune reported : After hoisting a watermelon with a flaming candle above their heads, club members smashed it to the ground as a gesture of celebration, eliciting cheers from the waiting crowd.

'This is like seeing a movie with Brad Pitt [Images] or watching something like Pirates of the Caribbean,' the report quoted a fan as saying.

One expatriate fan bought popcorn for $50 and distributed it to the audience in a hall in the US. Generous? No, crazy is the word, for the popcorn was to substitute confetti and used whenever Rajni appeared on screen!

'There was this guy in the theatre who wore a Sivaji-style wig, and entertained people even before the movie started. There was another guy, who spent around $50 on popcorn and distributed it to everyone so people could throw it in the air when Rajni filled the screen. Another gang brought camphor and pumpkins to show to a Rajni poster. They started dancing and yelling way before the film started,' a fan wrote in.

A theatre in Singapore, struggling to keep up with overflowing fans, is reported to have screened 15 shows in a day.

'Every film I will not miss and I see them at least one time -- minimum one time, and maximum up to 10 or 20 times. He is my very favourite actor. He is a very good inspiration for me. I love him,' the report quoted a fan as saying.

Trade data from Britain shows Sivaji overtaking Fantastic Four, Ocean's 13 and the third installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean!

Sivaji, which is being shown only in 12 screens in Britain, has fetched one of the biggest starting collections ever on the island and has put to shame the much hyped Yash Raj film Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, which has only collected nearly Rs 23 million despite being shown in 47 screens,' the report said.

Movie halls in Abu Dhabi did not fail to cash in on Sivaji mania either. They hiked ticket prices and sure enough, the fans didn't mind.

'I have watched the movie four times and I will watch a few more times. Price hike does not make a difference because such movies deserve it,' said the Khaleej Times quoted a caterer named Gopinath as saying.

While Gopinath would have burned a hole in his pocket, about a thousand labourers in Dubai were in luck. The Rajni World Welfare Trust, an NGO, will distribute tickets free of costs to the workers, including housemaids.

'There are many hard-working labourers in Dubai who wish to watch the movie but cannot afford it. That's why we decided to buy tickets for them,' an organiser said.

In Malaysia, like everywhere else, it broke the box office records, collecting Rs 60 lakhs on its opening day.

Earlier, fans had gone berserk when the movie's screening was delayed, causing losses running into lakhs.

'Movie fans turned violent causing thousands of dollars worth of damage in Malaysia when the screening of a new South Indian flick was delayed or cancelled,' a report said.

'In the central Selangor state, northern Perak and Penang states, police were needed to stop Friday's violence, the New Straits Times newspaper said. At the Sri Intan theatre in Klang, west of the capital Kuala Lumpur, fans destroyed speakers, tore the screen and curtains and broke chairs after the movie came to an abrupt stop midway due to a technical problem,' the report added.

And finally, fans in Japan -- where the star has an inexplicably huge following -- will get to see the movie by the end of June.

The movie will also be released in South Africa sometime around the end of June for which 50 prints are in the making.

No review is needed for any Rajini movie.

Rajini fans will watch the movie no matter what, enjoy the movie and have a blast and get full paisa vasool.

Non-Rajini will look for logic in the movie, curse Rajini and keep cribbing about wasting money on such a stupid movie.

this is true. one can rip apart the movie for its utter lack of logic but then, it wasn't what the movie was all about! i mean, it is just a comedy.

i enjoyed it thoroughly except for the unnecessary emphasis on the colour of skin and portrayal of two dusky girls as "ugly". sends the wraaaang message from The Boss.

on another note, i had no idea so many tamilians lived in my city - so far, i have only been to carnatic concerts and poor ravi kiran/kadri G had only a sprinkling of ppl attending despite the tickets being free!

this movie was house full - cooooooooooool, buddy!

Incidentally this is the blogpost that greatbong refers to, the one that started the apparently longest chain of responses in blogosphere history...

On Rajnikanth The Boss

Jun 16th, 2007 by Confused

Dear Tamil people (and other interested folks),

Please explain this Rajnikanth phenomenon to me. Why do people watch his movies? Kamal Hasaan I would understand; in my view he is one of India’s finest actors.

But Rajnikanth? Admittedly, I haven’t seen any of his Tamil movies. But what most people seem to talk about is not the movie but his mannerisms: how he pops up the bubblegum or how he wears his sunglasses e.t.c. One fan commented that he would ‘’start following the story from the 4th viewing!” No one seems to be interested in his acting, the story, other characters as long as Rajni can show some foolish antics more suitable to kindergarten than cinema screens.

After all, we are talking about a movie here and not a comic book for 5 year olds! How can people watch a movie only for how an actor lights his cigarette?

No doubt, he has marketed himself rather well; he only acts in one movie every two years. He also refuses to endorse any products thus preserving his exclusivity. Also, all the buzz helps and some people would no doubt just walk into see what the tamasha is all about. But still such madness is absolutely inexplicable! I mean there are reports that some fans actually flew from Chennai to New Delhi just because all the tickets were sold out.

Now, no one would ever seriously accuse Bollywood of intelligence, but even they try to include some sort of a story. True, the ‘’story” is usually a badly plagiarized version of the latest Hollywood blockbuster, but at least they make that effort. No leading man in Bollywood can carry a movie completely on his shoulder– at best, they can guarantee an opening. Also, Bollywood uses heroines to attract the front benchers. Rajnikanth, on the other hand, seems to be the only one in his movie who counts. Rest are mere props.

I am even more curious to understand the unchanging milieu of Tamil cinema. All of Rajanikanth’s movie seem to be based on a simple premise of a single man taking on the entire system and winning! Bollywood has largely vacated this space. Now its leading men worry about other pressing issues; will the helicopter which is supposed to fly them from their mansion in Scotland to their chalet in Switzerland be on time and other such concerns of national importance. A movie which shows a single man battling against the system would probably be laughed off by the multiplex audience. Even the original angry young man has mellowed and is now playing more popcorn characters. Why hasn’t this happened in Rajnikanth movies?

Well, if you come so far you might as well explain this general obsession with film stars in Tamil Nadu. Almost every leading politician in Tamil Nadu, from Jayalalitha to Karunanidhi seems to have some connection with the film world. I have little doubt that if Rajnikanth jumps into politics, he would sweep the elections. What explains such reverence for film stars?

Rajinikanth Phenomenon

A Fellow blogger whom i greatly admire Confused wrote a seemingly innocuous post, requesting help on deconstructing the charisma of Rajinikanth and his unabated ability to mesmerize Tamil masses. It appears to have raised lot of heckles and before one could blink, it predictably degenerated in to North-South slanging march .The slugfest then gave way to some outrageous funny exchanges featuring the best and brightest of the Indian blogsphere

The deluge of responses leads me to examine the ‘Rajinikanth Phenomenon’. I have read facile assertions to more nuanced interpretations on how this man continues to reign supreme in the minds of the masses but still the ‘Rajinikanth Phenomenon’ continues to intrigue me.

Not unlike M G Ramachandran, Rajini can be safely regarded as ‘cultural’ icon of Tamil Nadu. This is simply incredulous for someone who represents the antithesis of the tapered, exclusivist ‘Tamil Culture’ that the Dravidian politics has tried to ‘fabricate’ to achieve their devious socio-political-cultural agenda

It’s nothing short of remarkable that Rajini could defy such powerful forces ranging against him and still emerge triumphant in the Tamil tinsel town .So much reminiscent of the storyline in his films

The specious Dravidian atheists loathe him .Rajini’s religiosity is powerful countervailing influence against their essentially political project of building make-believe world of godless Dravidistan. His religiosity, which is curious mix of excessive piety and mumbo-jumbo of Himalayan spirituality and Mantralya mantras, strikes powerful chord among legions of undulating followers, who more often than not emulate his off-screen qualities, particularly his religiosity .And he invokes imagery of gods and goddess to communicate his thoughts and feelings. Remember those immortal words -”Even God cannot save Tamil Nadu if Jaya is voted back to power” and televised turnaround later comparing her to ‘Ashtalakshmi’(8 forms of Goddess Lakshmi)

Tamil Secessionist(voices get shriller especially when Karunanidhi is in power) detest him for Maratha lineage .Infact the ill-informed among them think that he is a Kannadiga and he his unfailingly target of their ire whenever monsoon rains fail in Cauvery basin. One could really identify with the pain of Rajini during the one of those periodic flare-ups over the Cauvery dispute. He pointed out how he gets insinuated as ‘closet’ Kannadiga by Tamil chauvinists, dismissed as being partisan towards the cause of Tamil Nadu by Kannada bigots and disdainfully referred as Madrasi by North of India. He volunteered to contributed Rs 1 crore for National Rivers Integration Project

The elitist intelligentsia treats him condescendingly - his ‘ridiculous’ comic scenes and ‘ludicrous’ punch lines is largely seen as insult to their fecund faculty. Their conceit would manifests usually in celebrating the acting prowess of Kamalhassan who panders to their ‘class’ by churning out abtruse, often pseudo-intellectual movies which are unmitigated commercial disasters

The votaries of Dravidian politics hate him .For them he is an ‘import’ who has been cunningly co-opted by ‘Aryan’ forces to perpetuate hegemony on Tamil cultural space. That he is married to Latha and is close friend of maverick but truly outstanding journalist Cho Ramaswamy is what they offer as clinching proof. Their concocted racial theories of ‘black’ Dravidian being in awe of ‘White’ Aryan explodes in the face of dark-skinned Rajini achieving superstardom in Kollywood

The political classes in Tamil Nadu have reached an uneasy truce with him. One shouldn’t be deceived by the public display of camaraderie-they deeply fear that even best laid political plans, for ascension of their sons and daughters to their mantle, will be in smithereens if Rajini decides to take the political plunge. Someone like Jaya smartly realized the folly of incurring his wrath. And the entire edifice of spurious Dravidian politics based on “Poor Dravidian is oppressed and pauperized by the scheming ‘Aryans’ will come crashing down. That he is admirer of Vajpayee-Advani adds to their discomfiture

Magalir Sangams, abound with localized clones of barking Brinda Karat and practicing their Marxist feminism, accuse him of being brazen male chauvinist .They create ruckus on some flimsy grounds whenever his movie is released. And the self-appointed guardians of Tamil morality are aghast with him for stylizing smoking and glorifying boozing

How does he manage to defy all stereotypes? How Rajini’s magnetism still sway the Tamil masses?

My guess is that its combination of off-screen persona and onscreen image

His movies revolve around universal themes that appeal to the subaltern who still constitute the bulk of movie-going audience. Rich exploiting the poor, underdog achieves spectacular success against overwhelming odds, practicing charity as one makes zillions, making personal sacrifices for the good of near and dear. Movie-goers live their fantasies through his movies. If you cut through the Dravidian propa*a, a Tamizhan is fundamentally god fearing, industrious and they root for this man by identifying with the simple themes that underlies all his movies

His off-screen persona (I have no reason to believe that it’s cultivated) is essentially that of confused simpleton with limited worldly needs, totally deglamorised ,terribly uncomfortable with the enormous riches chasing him, struggling to come in terms with the immense popularity and as a result of this seeking spiritual succor for salvation. But what really adds mystique to his persona is his elusiveness. He is unlike Amitabh whose is paying the price for being ubiquitous (Remember the distasteful and repugnant way in which the Bacchans court media attention and make a public spectacle of their lives). At any given point of time, Rajini’s whereabouts are subject of intense media speculation and untraceablility leads to conclusions that he is seeking atonement in Himalaya .It could well be that he might actually be savoring Scotch in his sprawling Kelambakkam Farmhouse.

Rajinikanth’s public appearances are far and few between but whenever they happen it invariably add to the ever growing legend of that man .He would be appear in the public platform bailing out some financially crippled Kollywood Producer or veteran Kollywood star who in the past launched unprovoked diatribe against him. Or he would seen deferentially bowing to touch the feet of his mentor ,the ace director Balachander. The only event where Rajini’s presence is foregone conclusion is the anniversary celebration of Cho Ramaswamy ‘s magazine where the famed Editor keeps the audience spellbound with his unconventional take on state and national politics

In Tamil Nadu, every eminent personality from past, present and future are being usurped and their identity defined within narrow, sectarian caste terms .Their deeds and actions have been reinterpreted to suit the blinkered predilection of Dravidian Ideology.Rajinikanth continues to pose challenge to them by exposing the limits of their pernicious project. In that sense he is truly unifying force

Any explanation of Rajini phenomenon is inadequate. The best possible thing would be to experience and enjoy his movies. For the thinking class, this might mean “suspending” their sensibilities. Sometimes it might be worth it. So try it out.

Rajini is savvy businessman too.He is someone who is a primarily product of Dravidian irrationality which blurred line dividing reel life and real life in pursuit of political power. He strategicaly makes peace with the Dravidian establishment and laughs his way to bank .Yet to be launched Kalaignar TV ,the Kanimozhi-Dayulu Ammal join venture( family enterprise of Karunanidhi involving his wife Dayulu and soon to be Central Minister Kanimozhi, daughter through his companion) reportedely paid whopping amount to bag the rights of the movie 'Sivaji'

It’s close to a week since ‘Sivaji’ release and I have not seen it. It’s probably the first time that I have not watched Rajini blockbuster for so long after it got released.Thats a shame but blame it out on the Kannada groups that ensured that movie got released in only few theatres here.I am planning to travel to Chennai this week to see the movie. So what if I need to buy tickets in the ‘black ‘to see this movie which is purportedly about Rajini fighting against evils of ‘black money’.

Afterall Rajini is all about celebrating contradictions.

omigawd!

senior software architects in the US make a lot of money, it seems - coooooooool!  ;D

Anywhere outside TN, the ticket prices for Sivaji start at Rs. 200 and can go upto Rs. 600 - this is in white - not even black rates.

TN still has enforced regulations on movie tix prices - so tix prices are Rs. 50-Rs. 100 only in white.
