DHAKA: Dinesh Karthik, with a century that showed his strong character, hoped that he would now be considered for the job as a rightful candidate.
Did he expect recognition as a regular Test opener? "Hopefully so. I am trying my best to become a very good opener. I have been always trying to do that. Viru bhai (Sehwag) also began as a middle order batsman and changed into an opener. I want to get as many runs as possible,'' he said on Saturday as India took a firm grip on the second Test against Bangladesh.
"It was tough because conditions were really hard and I was running a bit of a temperature. I could feel the cramps in my hamstring. But I told myself to keep playing as I was very close to my hundred. It was important as it was my first (Test) hundred and I am happy about it.''
Consistency
About his batting approach he said, "I try to be as consistent as possible. And that can be done if I work a lot on my batting in terms of footwork, in terms of mindset. Also I am trying to transform my batting from one-day cricket to Test cricket. I am happy at the way things are going on.''
Support staff
Karthik gave credit to the support staff. "You can see a lot of work is being done backstage. Generally these guys never get any recognition.''
The Bangladesh bowlers, Karthik noted, were tired on Saturday. "We could easily see it. Their best chance was to get a couple of wickets early on, which they did not.''
Karthik mentioned a few names behind his success. "My family, my wife; the way they supported me. I was having fever and my wife stayed awake last night. It is nice to have the family around.''
Dejected picture
Mohammad Ashraful presented a dejected picture, disappointed at the way his team shaped up in the last session. "We are professionals and these things should not affect us for long. They also bowled well and the new ball was used very well. I won't say this is one of the worst days for Bangladesh cricket.''
On the approach from here Ashraful said, "We would take it session by session and hope to bat well in the second innings. We will play better in the second innings, so coach (Dav Whatmore) will not be so disappointed.''
