Wisden puts Raina in rare company

Wisden puts Raina in rare company

Suresh Raina may have lost his place in the Indian team due to indifferent form but he figures among the 10 players, who will "define" cricket in the next decade.

The latest issue of the Wisden Cricketer clubs Raina with Australians batsman Michael Clarke, paceman Shaun Tait, all-rounder Shane Watson, England batsman Kevin Pietersen, Pakistan's fast medium seamer Mohammad Asif, Sri Lanka's fast bowler Lasith Malinga, West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor and Bangladesh vice captain Mohammad Ashraful as the players who will define cricket's next decade.

Well-known British cricket writer Lawrence Booth states in the article that Raina had the talent to be a left-handed Sachin Tendulkar with even more intuitive flair.

"But he needs to be sensitively handled by India. The way he dismantled England during an ODI in Faridabad in March 2006 hinted at a rare genius, and Greg Chappell never stopped singing his praises. Aged 20, he has plenty of time on his side," he said.

Paying glowing tributes to the hard-hitting Pietersen, the article said that he finished the World Cup at the top of the one day ratings and he has the ability to stay there.

"Only if he grows fed up with his teammates' failings, will his potential be threatened but Pietersen -- flamingo shot, left-handed sweep, bottom-handed cover drive and all -- is well on course to fulfill Ponting's prediction that he is world cricket's next great phenomenon,"  it said.

Raina in the same line as Kevin Pietersen! Indian cricket has hope.

Now to slam Lawrance Booth. How dare he say that GC spotted some talent! Nothing GC did could be good.

Yes, it is perfectly alright if you guys joke about convicts and it is also ok to start a million threads if Ravi or whomever does it  ::)

And that isn't done about Kapil Dev? Gavaskar?

Why ruin a thread about Raina with the same ol negativity?

I hereby announce my intention to form a committee to consider a possible run as Suresh Raina's #1 Fan and Supporter on this DG.  Any negative remarks about our superstar in absentia shall be summarily dealt with.  SR is perhaps the most talented Indian cricketer and is being denied chances by that over-the-hill loser from bengal.

Which hill did the loser go over?

Are there any hills in Bengal?

Is the guy, who went over the hill, a certified loser?

Does it mean that anyone, who goes over that particular hill, becomes a loser?

Does it mean that only if a Bengali goes over that particular hill, he becomes a loser; while others don't?

What is your source of information, who told you the following:
   A) There was a hill in Bengal
   B) Some person went over that hill
   C) That person is a loser

Can your source be named or he wishes to remain unnamed?

What is his credibility, in case he wishes to remain unnamed?

Are you going to answer the questions asked above?

My first cut was that.. but then I thought otherwise (he or Kaif should have been sent to BD ODIs).
..
BTW, can you imagine an offside fielding cordon of Kartik, YS, Kaif and Raina!!! Perhaps the best in world

Kaif maybe. But you wanted to send an injured Raina who needed surgery to BD? Come now.

But, I agree the off side cordon with these guys would be great. It would help if they got their batting in good shape .... and would be great if they did a bit of bowling too.

GC made a few comments about the future of Indian cricket. He said that Karthik and Raina were to be watched out for and he seems to have been right about one of them so far. May be he will be proved right about the other also.

I think Raina will do well. Am still not confident about KKD as a specialist batsman.

I think there were many others (Sobers, Richards - both Barry and Viv, Hussain, David Lloyd, Holding etc) besides GC ..who were in awe of SR's talent

BTW, so was more than half of this DG during the England ODIs ;D ;D

Not really, there are quite afew others who still believe he has the talent to be a batting star -- in the future. Speaking for myself, I shall say this -- I believe he has the latent talent, but needs polishing.

Speaking of youth..

How about this "maharathi-less" line-up for ODIs (perhaps as soon as England tour - I am allowed to dream, aint I?)..

RU/GG/MK*/YS/SR/KKD/MSD+/(Powar/Chawla)/SS/MP(?)/RPS .. with Tiwary/Sharma/Ishant/another young fast bowler making up the 15!!

Before we go gaga over SR and his prodigious talent, can we rewind to some of Wisden's selection of players ..their best 5, best 10 whatever and see if they have been , forget spot on, even close to the rankings...

And so with ICC rankings...the stark reality of not crowning Dhoni the emerging star....

Raina is good, so said the Guru...so did he about VRV Singh, RP Singh, Venugopala Rao....
And he has nothing to say about the likes of Badrinath .....

You sometimes strike the bull's eye in a 100 shots at it ...It has probably done so with his assessment of SR

I wouldnt have MP in the line up .. he is worse on fitness / athleticism than any maharathi, sucks with the bat and does not offer enough extra with the ball to merit a place in the side

But, where did any of us say that we like SR because GC liked him or because Wisden liked him? I dont see how this is relevant.

Granted. Members of this discussion group have a much keener eye for batting talent. Some of us just
tend to forget that on occasion. Apologies.

And where have I said that you liked him because Wisden and GC liked him...This thread was started and SR is being discussed because of the Wisden story...and I am calling into Question Wisden's Wisdom....and there are presumptive references to criticizing GC because he supposedly identified SR
